The question I have is could Trout walk through Times Square on a sunny Tuesday afternoon without sunglasses and go unrecognized?

Is the stage too big for them?
This is a group that’s been used to the no-pressure view from the basement the past two years. Now suddenly they’re in this high-pressured environment, where they’re expected to win. After all, the Red Sox were the favorites in this series. There weren’t many people who picked the Indians. Not with the Indians suffering two major starting pitching losses to two of their best guys in Danny Salazar and Carlos Carrasco.
There’s just no way ...

Alternative headline: When Red Sox pitch poorly, they don’t win. Thank you for the astute observation Evan Drellich.

“We have to win,” Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre said. “There’s no tomorrow. Not only that, we’re trying to do what they did to us last year. Hopefully we can turn it around and do the same thing they did to us last year. We know we can do it. We just need to get it done in the field. There’s no doubt we believe in this team. We’ve got to find a way.”

Thomas Boswell’s game recap.
I kept my eyes where shortstops roam.
Game 1 of the the NLDS between the San Francisco Giants and Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field ( CHC 1, SF 0) provided one the opportunity to admire the craftsmanship of the best defensive shortstops in the National League—Brandon Crawford of the Giants and Addison Russell of the Cubs.
Defensive evaluations are uncertain things, but when the numbers, the eye test, and reputation coalesce, you have something. So it is with Crawford and Russell. Having them both ...

United Press via Pittsburgh Press, October 7, 1916:
Plunging into the busy whirl of another world’s series, Boston’s Redsox clashed this afternoon in their first game with the Brooklyn Dodgers in defense of their their title as the world’s baseball champions.
A bright sun beaming from a cloudless sky barely took the chill off the autumn air. Packed in the gigantic stands of the country’s biggest ball park were upwared of 40,000 raving fans.
In the meantime a cabaret sextet made sour music. ...
Dodgers nation looks to Clayton Kershaw.
Or it could be a decline in skills?
Well that certainly feels like what Lester Freamon would call a headshot. seeing both rates fall off this much leads me to believe that Norris wasn’t just bitten by bad luck affecting his balls in play. I cannot help, but feel that some sort of injury, your guess is as good as mine as to what, led to a guy gutting through discomfort in an effort to help his team on the field. While that is nice to see, you can see the profound effect this proposed malady had ...
Cespedes has stepped up with his production, and the Mets must step up with their years and dollars. See if a four-year, $100 million agreement — sure, go ahead and frontload it and offer him an opt-out after 2017, replicating the details that increased the lure of their prior agreement — will get it done. If Cespedes has too many superior offers? Jack it up to five years and $125 million.

Which is why it was a big deal, in the first weeks after Wren’s ouster, to promote Brian Bridges to scouting director and bring back Roy Clark, who’d left for the Nationals. Coppolella’s vision includes “wave after wave of prospects” coming through the system: “I believe in waves,” he says, “not windows.” And Swanson, the tip of Wave 1, was as good as advertised.
Let’s be clear. The Braves aren’t yet where they need to be. But, as Hart said, “to where we are from where ...

It’s cheaper to buy a seat for a Jays’ playoff game in Texas (as low as $8) than to drink a beer ($10) while watching the playoffs at the Rogers Centre.

The Diamondbacks appear to have compiled at least a preliminary list of potential general manager candidates to take over for the departing Dave Stewart, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe (Twitter link). In addition to a quartet of men with ties to the organization, MLB senior VP Kim Ng is under consideration, per the report.
Ng has long been discussed as a front office target for organizations, and has interviewed for top baseball ops positions on several occasions. A former ...

As a young man, one of Buck’s overwhelming fears was losing his hair, and the possibility soon consumed him. So at age 24, in Oct. 1993, he flew to New York City to get his first hair replacement treatment. He writes that, after the procedure, “I, Joseph Francis Buck, became a hair-plug addict.”

Hanley did a nice job over at first base this year. He wasn’t a Gold Glove first baseman but he played well enough to keep himself there next season.
“I prepared myself to be in this position, and we’re here,” Ramirez said. “That should be your mentality every spring training, if you’re not, you’re a loser. Your mentality has to be playing in October and celebrating in November. That’s why they sign you and give you everything you need to help you win a championship.
“When you have a lot of ...

Pittsburgh Gazette Times, October 6, 1916:
Charles Evans Hughes, Republican candidate for president, has made a request for a box seat at the first world’s series baseball game to be played in Brooklyn, it was learned…today. The Brooklyn club management has granted the request and a box back of third base was set aside for Mr. Hughes and his party. It is expected that the candidate will throw out the first ball.
Hughes was better luck for the Dodgers than he was for his own presidential ...Read More...
Starting with this one: Can they still trust Familia?
“All he did all year long was pick up his teammates,” manager Terry Collins said. “But in the postseason when you give one up and you lose a game, it can be really hard on you.”
Familia, to his credit, stood at his locker and answered wave after wave of interrogators. Also to his credit, he didn’t look shattered. His head wasn’t covered in a towel, and tears didn’t fill his eyes. In that sense, at least, he recalled Mariano ...

I’ve argued in the past for the idea of “emergent WAR,” which is the idea of teams deriving value, not from individual contributions, but from the ways in which the parts of the roster can interact with one another. For example, putting a groundball-heavy pitcher in front of a good infield defense can be worth several hits turned into outs, and turning a hit into an out is worth roughly three-quarters of a run each time you do it. A good GM could have the wherewithal to execute a plan to ...
What Marlow said was stupid. I don’t agree, however, with the idea that any non-specific criticism should be automatically painted as misogynistic. The writer’s decision to paint her detractors with a broad brush as a response undercuts his argument.
But Marlow’s criticism follows the same tired trend we always see with Mendoza. It’s never specific, and it’s more about the fact that she’s a woman than anything else. It’s never anything like, “I wish her hitting breakdowns were more ...
