Resurgent Matt Moore could help Rays here or as trade chip | Tampa Bay Times

And he pitched well enough to ignite a trade market that the Rays would benefit from warming as a third choice to a $7.5 million option and a $2.5 million buyout for next season, with the Rangers already hot on Moore’s trail and three-four others expected to join the pursuit.

“He’s a top-of-the-rotation guy,” said good buddy Alex Cobb, who is nearing the end of his own TJ rehab. “He showed that before he got hurt, and it took him a little while to get back. But it seems like he’s back to being ...

Congress members introduce act to limit minor league wages

Kentucky congressman Brett Guthrie and Illinois congresswoman Cheri Bustos have introduced a new act to the House of Representatives to limit the salaries of minor league baseball players.

The “Save America’s Pastime Act” act comes in response to a push for minor-league players to make more money and a lawsuit arguing that federal overtime laws should apply to players.

If the bill is passed, minor league players would not be protected under the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938.

Minor ...

Phillies prospect Mark Appel has season-ending elbow surgery

The news just keeps getting worse on Mark Appel.

Mark Appel, a Phillies prospect and former first overall pick, underwent season-ending surgery Wednesday to remove a bone spur from his right elbow.

Appel, who turns 25 next month, was on the minor-league disabled list with a shoulder injury. He injured his elbow, the Phillies said, when he restarted a throwing program as part of his rehab. The team does not believe Appel has an additional shoulder problem.

But Appel will lose crucial ...

Matt Carpenter joining some of elites, when it comes to leadoff hitters.

Matt Carpenter, a 13th-round pick in 2009, has re-imagined the leadoff spot for a modern game and is on his way to claiming two of the best seasons ever by a leadoff hitter. Carpenter has made a strong All-Star push with a remarkable month. Since the birth of his daughter, Carpenter has hit .385 with a .491 on-base percentage and a 1.231 OPS. He has reached base almost as many times (57) as he has outs (59) in that span. With another two hits Tuesday night in Kansas City, Carpenter has raised ...

Top prospect Aaron Judge making case to be on the New York Yankees - Yankees Blog- ESPN

“I think if you felt you can get a jolt from anyone, you would ask for it,” manager Joe Girardi said. “Cash would do something about it. I know [Judge] is swinging the bat well. I know who is swinging the bat well all the time, but that is not my call. We need something. We need to start playing better.”

Cubs use 3 different pitchers as OFs en route to 15-inning win

The Cubs played three different pitchers in left field in their 15-inning, 7-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday. Two of them, lefty Travis Wood and righty Spencer Patton, alternated pitching and playing left in the 14th inning before Wood pitched the 15th while setup man Pedro Strop played left field.

“We were down to almost nothing,” manager Joe Maddon said after using 22 of the 25 players on his roster. “Travis, my God, what an athlete. ... Travis made everything possible. He may have ...

The Francisco Lindor Effect Is Ridiculous | FanGraphs Baseball

My focus is going to be on grounders in particular, because I want to show you the kind of difference Francisco Lindor can make. A month and a half ago, I posted an InstaGraphs about the Cubs defending grounders. At that point, the Cubs led baseball in lowest slugging percentage allowed on grounders, according to Baseball-Reference. At that point, of course, the Cubs led baseball in lots of stuff. Anyway, since then, the season sample size has doubled. Here’s the new big-league landscape.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 6-29-2016

Washington Times, June 29, 1916:

[Cleveland manager] Lee Fohl makes a bid for popularity when he numbers his players, but what’s the use?

In these latter days of baseball in the major leagues, every park is well equipped with score boards and official announcers. There is no need of numbering players in such an open game as baseball.
...
Let correct score boards be given away at all major league parks, and have some brains spent in the management of the scoreboard, that’s all that is necessary ...

Coastal Carolina Stays Alive in CWS

After dropping the series opener to Arizona on Monday night, Coastal Carolina bounced back with a 5-4 win Tuesday to force a Game 3 rubber match in the 2016 College World Series. The Chanticleers’ tournament run thus continues for one final game against a Wildcats club that had given up just six runs in Omaha before Game 2…

Never mind that the Chants were the 2016 Big South regular season and conference tournament champions. They beat last year’s CWS champs Virginia, 5-4, back in February. ...

Andrew Mccutchen in the country of baseball.

It starts with a man walking to a park to watch a baseball game. He doesn’t know why, other than the park is near his house. He has no connection to anyone on either team. He’s there for the most basic of reasons: It’s something to do.

He figures this is where he belongs. He coaches a team that plays in this park, Peterson Park in Lakeland, Florida, and he feels fullest when he’s on a ballfield. And so here he is, sitting in the clamped air of a central Florida summer watching what he ...

Billy Beane’s Athletics need to embrace a rebuild

Nobody in baseball today has as much of a reputation as a wheeler-dealer as Billy Beane’s Oakland A’s (yes, David Forst is the general manager, but they will always be Beane’s A’s). And it’s well-earned; when the going gets tough, A’s players get going.

Report: Red Sox, Jason Groome Far Apart In Contract Negotiations « CBS Boston

He doesn’t stand to to lose money in the long run? If he gets hurt, he loses a lot of money. If he doesn’t pitch as well next season, he loses a lot of money. If he doesn’t sign and gets to the the majors one year later, he loses a lot of money. Unless the Red Sox try to get him for less than slot, he might want to roll the dice. Otherwise, he’d be foolish to hold out.

Groome holds the leverage in holding out for a big-money signing bonus, as he previously opted out of a commitment to ...

Marcell Ozuna having breakout season for Miami | MLB.com

If Marcell Ozuna’s breakout season seems like an out-of-nowhere fluke, think again: This wasn’t terribly difficult to see coming. We told you about it in these pages right here, last November, shortly after we’d named Ozuna as one of the inaugural Statcast™ “five-tool players.”

Okay, we’ll grant that maybe this level of dominance is a bit more than we could have expected. By FanGraphs Wins Above Replacement, Ozuna is tied with Nolan Arenado (and, really, also Corey Seager and Kris Bryant, ...

BA: Kevin Maitan Is Venezuela’s Next Great Prospect Read

Aside from older Cuban players who have come over, Maitan, a 16-year-old switch-hitting shortstop, is the best international prospect for July 2 since Miguel Sano signed with the Twins for $3.15 million in 2009. Scouts considered both players potential impact, middle-of-the-order bats, though staying at shortstop was never a realistic option for Sano. With Maitan, he might be able to stay there, which is why you can argue he might be an even better prospect.

It takes a lot longer than that to ...

Colabello wants to clear his name

Colabello claims, “I can give you a thousand different theories [on how the metabolite showed up on the test]. My mind has literally gone to every possible corner that you can imagine. It’s gone to my mom’s breast cancer medicine. It’s gone to my dog’s medication.”

Unfortunately for Colabello, the damage is already done. His theories and words aren’t sufficient enough to clear his name or drop the 80-game suspension he’s currently serving without pay. He’ll have to step back onto the field ...

Mushnick: New-school thinking has taken all the wonder out of baseball

Such a wonderful game. Saturday, MLB Network presented consecutive “Look-Ins” to games in progress.

The first showed Ichiro Suzuki, 42, working a walk, stealing second, going to third on a single to short left, and scoring on a sac fly. Fabulous.

Next was Daniel Murphy hitting one deep to right. The ball hit the top of the wall and rolled toward the infield. Running all the way, Murphy easily made third, whereas “the game has changed” posers and joggers would’ve been at second, if ...
