Keri: The Tommy John Epidemic: What’s Behind the Rapid Increase of Pitchers Undergoing Elbow Surgery?
Being the general manager of a baseball team is an extraordinarily difficult job. A GM must have a near-preternatural understanding of baseball, the patience to deal with the Bond-villain egos of owners, and the administrative capacity to manage a diverse and often combative set of employees. A GM must earn the trust of his (or, someday — we hope — soon, her) coaches, staff, and players in order to get them to operate like a unit, while maintaining the emotional distance to view them as ...Read More...
MiLB’s top defensive minor league center fielders.
This a an Odd Couple pairing that I’d actually watch.
The international stage is set for Tuesday’s opening of the historic two-game series where newly established “Team Europe” will make its world premiere against the top-ranked Japanese National Team at the iconic Tokyo Dome on 10-11 March.
There will be a live broadcast of the two-game series (Game times: 18:00 Japanese Standard Time). The games will be televised free-to-air nationally across Japan by the Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS). In Europe, Eurosport 2 will broadcast the games live ...Read More...

“All you have to do is get some smoke out there and, trust me, I’m from the country, I live in the country. You take some smoke out there and you smoke the hive, ‘cause the queen’s in there somewhere, then you get a ShopVac and you suck ‘em all in, take ‘em outside the park and let ‘em all go.”
I’ll take “‘80s sports talk topics” for $800, Alex.
The A’s certainly won’t be a powerhouse on the position player side. If you look at BB-Ref’s Positional Comparisons it looks like the rebuilt A’s have the potential to put at least similar WAA on the position player side as they did last year. Ben Zobrist (5.0 bWAR) is a big upgrade at 2B (Oakland -1.4 bWAR last year). This one pick-up can have a big impact. The keys, however, are Marcus Semien and Brett Lawrie. If Semien can provide slightly above average play at SS and Lawrie can stay on the ...Read More...
Why do the baseball gods hate Jose Iglesias’ shins?

Beane is still a step or two ahead.
Managers have to home some type of plan to rest catchers. Personal catchers are as good a way to manage playing time as any.
Cubs decide to ban outside food from their spring training ballpark. It was apparently an overnight decision. Key bit:
It will be interesting to see how much he signs for.

Cliff Lee isn’t going anywhere for a while at least.
In baseball the captain doesn’t even have to go down with the ship.
Read Kiley McDaniel’s great analysis of the Hector Olivera situation. After reading it, I wouldn’t want to be the team to take the risk unless it was for very short money.
Chris Davis, bunting fool.
John Sickels’ Top 20.
