Mamie Johnson, Woman Who Pitched In Negro Leagues, Dead At 82

So she turned to the Negro Leagues, where she signed on with the Indianapolis Clowns in 1953 and spent three seasons racking up a 33-8 record as a pitcher while hitting .270. She became the first woman to pitch in the league.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-20-2017

Phillies Phans react to the sale of Grover Cleveland Alexander and Bill Killefer to the Cubs. Philadelphia Evening Ledger, December 20, 1917:

I think President Baker will regret this deal, for, as you said before, he will have to draw his crowds with a pencil.

Does President Baker intend to close up the Phillies’ ball ground next season? He might as well. Who on earth, or rather Philadelphia, is going to patronize ball games after such a “raw deal”?

I think it’s the rottenest deal that could be ...

A $300-million team? Don’t expect the Dodgers to have a payroll like that again - LA Times

I’m still surprised the union agreed to this provision.

The 110th page of baseball’s collective bargaining agreement explains why: Any team with a payroll that exceeds the designated “second surcharge threshold” will not only pay a heavy monetary fine, but will also have its top pick in the amateur draft moved back 10 places.

Miami Marlins CEO Derek Jeter addresses angry fans at town hall meeting | Miami Herald

Every GM is above average.

“Michael can speak on this. We have trust in him doing his job. He does it very well,” Jeter said. “Pitching, defense wins. This minor-league system was the worst in baseball. You can’t win like that. We need to add prospects to our organization and develop them. We added [former Yankees executive] Gary Denbo, who is the best in the business in player development.”

Baseball America Presents: An Interview With MILB’s Pat O’Conner | BaseballAmerica.com

I’ve seen a few people take after Pat O’Connor for some of the quotes in this article. As much as some of their complaints have validity, I put a lion’s share of the blame for minor league pay at the feet of the players. If my memory serves, there are about 200 minor leaguers per organization. It wouldn’t take a huge sum of money per team, relatively speaking, to move minimum player salary to an acceptable level. The Players Association is in the best position to push for minor leaguers. Their ...

Major League Baseball’s Statcast Can Break Sabermetrics

We are clearly at a fork in the road.

That’s notably different from the operating procedure that’s fairly standard in the public analytics community: typically, if a researcher knows something he’s working on is incomplete, he’ll want to, well, complete it before its release (or at least slap a “beta” label on it). But as Tango notes, the incentives and big-picture goals of a complex enterprise like Statcast are dramatically different from those of a guy moonlighting on Baseball ...

Marlins Comment On Trading Unhappy Players

Yelich and Realmuto should get comfortable in Miami. That they believe they really have control over where they will play going forward is another consequence of the bungling of the whole Stanton contract situation.

This statement amounts to the Marlins telling their holdovers they have zero leverage. Players like Yelich and Realmuto can be unhappy all they want, but Miami is going to do what it feels is best.

If the Marlins don’t find the right package for the two, they have no problem ...

What happens if I try to steal on every pitch? An OOTP experiment

I read once, that if a base-stealer is successful at any less than an 80% rate, it is better for him not to run, hence the lack of steal attempts in recent years. But this also implies that for a player with any more than an 80% steal rate, with every attempt he is helping his team win. So in this experiment I endeavored to find out what would happen with a team of track stars…

My draft strategy was actually not to grab up all the fast guys immediately, but draft the very few 85+ stealing ...

Chatwood Initial Deal with Cubs Violated Rules – Inside the Seams

Former Rockies right-hander Tyler Chatwood agreed to a three-year, $38 million free-agent contract with the Cubs. Nothing wrong with that. The deal, however, included a clause that if he received one Cy Young vote — even for fifth place — his 2019 salary would be increased $2 million, and if he received one vote in 2018 and one vote in 2019 he would receive a $4 million raise in his salary for 2019. One problem — that clause was illegal, and if anybody should have known the Cubs should ...

Many moving parts to potential Zack Greinke trade

The danger in posting a two-day-old trade-rumor story is that it may have evaporated two days ago.  But the Rangers have been so quiet this winter (big acquisitions have been Doug Fister and somebody named Chris Martin whom I assume is not the Coldplay guy or the Jets’ running back) that I have to have something to muse about.

After walking around all off-season with their pockets turned out, the Rangers have engaged the Arizona Diamondbacks about right-hander Zack Greinke, the former Cy Young ...

ESPN: Carlos Santana signing a significant step in Phillies’ rebuild (Schoenfield)

1. First off, at three years and $60 million, it’s not overpaying, and limiting the deal to three years means there’s little chance of it blowing up on the back end. Santana owns a career .365 OBP, so he brings some much-needed on-base ability to the Phillies lineup. The deal takes him through his age 32-34 seasons, and while Santana’s home run production has been inconsistent through the years—27 in 2014, 19 in 2015, 34 in 2016, 23 in 2017—we know he will draw his walks.
