Padres Designate Jeff Francoeur For Assignment

Frenchy wasn’t really pitching well enough at El Paso (6.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 HR, 3 BB, 4 K, 3 HBP) to justify a hitter/pitcher platoon with Jason Lane, but hell, I’d still like to see it.

The Padres have designated outfielder Jeff Francoeur for assignment to clear room for top prospect Rymer Liriano‘s promotion, tweets Marty Caswell of 1090 radio in San Diego.

The 30-year-old Francoeur recently joined the Friars’ big league club after spending much of the season with Triple-A El Paso, but he ...

The Best Beer in Baseball

Several years ago, craft beer started taking off at Cincinnati’s Great American Ballpark. From 2011-2012, sales went up by 20 percent. From 2012-2013, they were up 47 percent.

So when it came time to create a new hangout in a highly trafficked spot on the third-base concourse, the ballpark went all-in on craft-style beers. The new Reds Brewery District – an 84-foot-long bar with more than 50 taps – included more than 20 craft offerings when it opened this spring. There were local beers ...

To Sung Woo, Thanks For Everything! Rany Jazayerli

Hey, I’m a Korean Royals fan too!

This summer, Sung Woo finally decided to take the plunge. Taking advantage of a job change, he was able to carve out ten days from his schedule to come to Kansas City, watch the Royals play, and maybe do a little sight-seeing and barbecue-eating while he was in town. He emailed Kamler and fellow Royals fan Dave Darby that he was buying his plane ticket and reserving his hotel room; they told him not to worry about transportation, that they’d pick him up and ...

Rockies’ Brett Anderson likely done for season with bulging disc

Anderson is the pitcher version of Nick Johnson.

Colorado Rockies starter Brett Anderson has been diagnosed with a bulging disc in his back and is likely to miss the remainder of the season, Rockies trainer Keith Dugger told reporters Sunday.

Anderson will see a specialist Monday to determine the next step in his treatment.

The left-hander was forced to leave his start last Tuesday after just three innings when his back locked up, at which point the Rockies said Anderson was likely headed to ...

Girls power Little League contenders

Mo’ne Davis and Kayla Roncin almost couldn’t help but run into each other last week in Bristol, Connecticut.

As the only two girls among the hundreds of kids on the 52 U.S. teams remaining in the race to the Little League World Series, Davis, 13, who plays for the Taney Youth Baseball Association in Philadelphia, and Roncin, 12, from Toms River, New Jersey, are both competing in the Mid-Atlantic regional. Sunday’s final will send the winner to Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Jack O’Connell: Cashman: Retire captaincy with Jeter

Captain Francesco Schetino Martinez…we salute you. (glug-glug-glug)

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman believes that once Derek Jeter retires, the captaincy of the Yankees should retire as well.

Speaking to the Taylor Hooton Foundation’s fifth annual “Give A Hoot” benefit in a luxury suite at Yankee Stadium Sunday, Cash was asked who should succeed Jeter as team captain after his retirement.

Cashman’s response was “I’m not that big on captains myself. More than one player can ...

Matinale: Nolan Ryan, power pitcher into his 40s. Did he use steroids?

As lefty Zangara once said: “You is Kruk man too!”

John Kruk said Nolan Ryan was the fastest pitcher he faced.  Faster than Rob Dibble and Dwight Gooden, whom Kruk also named.  But Kruk was emphatic when asked: Nolan he replied multiple times.  This was during the ESPN Sunday night game in Boston between the Yankees and Red Sox Aug. 3, 2014.

I wasn’t sure when Kruk would have faced Ryan so I looked it up: 1986, 1987, 1988.  But here’s the thing.  Nolan Ryan was born January 31, 1947 in ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 8-11-2014

Toledo News-Bee, August 11, 1914:

SEMI-PRO FLINGER HAS GREAT RECORD

Rube Foster, the Christy Mathewson of colored baseball stars, has pitched 23 games for the American Giants, a colored semi-professional team, and won them all, according to the team’s official record. These games include contests with the Portland, Ore., and Spokane team of the Northwestern league.

And he’s only a semi-pro? Man, someone should really sign him.

Bryce Harper drawing heat for scuffing Braves logo at Turner Field

Washington Nationals star Bryce Harper can’t take a step these days without someone watching him. And apparently people — several thousands of them, in fact — were watching very closely on Saturday night, as he caught the attention and drew the ire of Atlanta Braves fans for repeatedly and seemingly intentionally scuffing the “A” logo that sits behind home plate at Turner Field.

Harper, of course, denies it being intentional, which is actually more pathetic.

Powers: Twins need fewer smiles, more snarls

Super Powers! Move over Franklin Richards here’s some real reality warping!

The Twins are loaded with this type of player: Nice guys who take losing in stride. Sweethearts with “big smiles on their faces” who appear to be just happy to be here.

If the Twins were a hockey team, they’d be considered soft. If they were a college football team, they would be the scheduled foe for every homecoming game in their conference. They are docile. And this has to change.

Yes, they need clutch hitters and ...

Townsend: Kate Upton says Yankees wouldn’t let her wear Tigers’ gear at Yankee Stadium

Life imitates Seinfeld yet again.

As you’ve probably seen or heard by now, Upton was seated directly behind the Tigers’ dugout to watch Verlander’s Tigers play against the Yankees on Tuesday night. At one point, they even had a fun exchange where Upton finally convinced Verlander to toss her a souvenir baseball. It was a light-hearted and fun moment, but apparently that’s as far as the Yankees were willing to let her go to show her support for Detroit.

While filling in for Kelly Ripa on ...

Marlins calling up Brad Penny to start tonight against the Reds

We heard earlier this week that the Marlins were thinking about calling up 36-year-old Brad Penny to fill the rotation spot of 23-year-old Jacob Turner, who was recently designated for assignment and swapped to the Cubs. Bartolo Colon earns 200th career win

Who you callin’ “round”?

Though the pitcher win is widely regarded as an outdated stat in today’s world of advanced stats and metrics, it’s still kinda cool to see a pitcher reach a round win total that only 111 pitchers before him have reached. In this case, we’re talking about 41-year-old Bartolo Colon, who on Friday night notched career win No. 200 in the New York Mets’ 5-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies…

With the victory, Colon becomes the third active pitcher to reach the 200-win ...
