Player’s Tribune | Giving Thanks - Jason Grilli

Dude, I love Canadian Thanksgiving.

For Americans who don’t know what the deal with Canadian Thanksgiving is, it’s basically just like American Thanksgiving except… earlier. The second Monday of every October. It’s really amazing. You have to try it.

For where I’m at in my life, the timing for my first Canadian Thanksgiving really couldn’t have been any better. This year, perhaps more than any other, I really have a lot to be thankful for.

Bauer cuts finger on drone, won’t start Game 2

Trevor Bauer cut his finger fixing one of the drones he likes to fly and won’t start Game 2 of the AL Championship Series, again diverting the Cleveland Indians’ pitching plans for the playoffs.

The right-hander needed several stitches to close the cut on the pinkie on his pitching hand. The enigmatic Bauer has built and flown drones for years, and was hurt while repairing a propeller.

Rob Manfred is open to outlawing drone usage.

10 Player-Development Storylines To Follow At The Arizona Fall League

Taylor Ward, C, Angels

The Angels’ selection of Ward in the first round of the 2015 draft had many industry observers scratching their heads due to concerns about the bat being good enough to make him more than a backup catcher. Though he impressed in the Midwest League during his first pro season, he underwhelmed when he moved up to the high Class A California League this year as his plate approach appeared less advanced than it had before. In addition to handling himself against better ...

Heyman - Teams Calling Royals On Wade Davis

Davis, though, should have excellent value even in a market stacked with excellent closers. It’s the best closing market perhaps ever, with Aroldis Chapman, Kenley Jansen and Mark Melancon all free agents.

Of course all three of those closers will cost a pretty penny (one GM predicted all three would top Jonathan Papelbon’s record $50-million deal for closers, and Chapman and Jansen certainly will), while Davis is a bargain.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 10-14-2016

Chicago Eagle, October 14, 1916:

What is the value of a sacrifice hit? Evidently all baseball managers do not agree on the worth of the play. Fielder Jones of the St. Louis American league team declares the sacrifice hit is one of the most valuable plays in baseball…On the other hand, George Stallings of the Boston Nationals is not at all enthusiastic over the play and seldom uses it, in fact, much less than any other manager in either league, and the standing of the Boston team is certainly an ...

Mets’ tough call on Neil Walker has its price: $17.2M | New York Post

The qualifying offer will be $17.2 million this offseason, and the Mets are among the teams that have decisions upcoming.

It appears unlikely a new collective bargaining agreement will be in place to affect the qualifying offer system this offseason. From what I have heard, nothing has been finalized on the issue. But one concept that has been discussed is to forbid the qualifying offer from being put on free agents in consecutive years (beginning in the 2017-18 offseason).

For example, Ian ...

Joe Maddon confident his Cubs will be ready for the NLCS - Chicago Tribune

They are good enough. They are smart enough. And, gosh darn it, people like them.

“And you don’t want to see all these other dudes,” Maddon said. “So this time of year, you just see good pitching. That’s what this time of the year means.

“I honestly believe our guys will be equal to the challenge. I know they’re going to be ready. We’re feeling pretty good about ourselves.”

For Javier Baez, making acrobatic tags is ‘just natural’ - Chicago Tribune

Javier Baez, tagger extraordinaire.

“Because I’m a lefty,” the Cubs infielder said. “I write lefty, I eat lefty, I even can hit lefty. With that on my glove side, I have really quick hands. I let the ball travel, and as soon as I catch it, my hand goes down to the tag.”

Blue Jays’ Tulowitzki: ‘This is for everything. It’s our time’

“I said it a month ago. This is the best version of the Blue Jays I’ve seen. This is a team that’s had to come together. We’ve had our backs against the wall all year. We’ve been through a lot. Nothing came easily for us. We didn’t win the division. We didn’t go any on any big winning streaks. We’ve had to fight just to get here.

“Now, this is for everything, a trip to the World Series. It’s our time.”

But maybe ... the Indians’ Andrew Miller has created a new position - Super Reliever: Doug Lesmerises |

It’s not new. He’s a fireman.

If we want more Andrew Millers in the baseball world, and we should, then we have to give them a name. If we can have closers and setup men, we can have a name for the reliever who gets the most dangerous hitters out in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. We can make it a new full-time position in major league baseball.

“I don’t know, didn’t they call them Firemen back in the day?” Miller said this week when I presented him with the Super Reliever name. “Goose ...

Dodgers’ Julio Urias gets win over Nationals |

Balk or no balk?

His move raised some eyebrows, however. According to Rule 8.05, “If a left-handed or right-handed pitcher swings his free foot past the back edge of the pitcher’s rubber, he is required to pitch to the batter except to throw to second base on a pick-off play.”

Urias’ free foot certainly came close to crossing that imaginary line. But in the eyes of the umpiring crew, it was a clean throw to first base and not a balk.

Hugh Fullerton in the Washington Times, October 13, 1916:

Boston won yesterday, and finished up the tamest and (if the magnates are wise) the last of the world’s series…Without detracting from the merits of the grand old game, it must be admitted that unless the club owners throw some life into their show, or else establish a new National League, the world’s series of the future will be a bloomer.

Danny Salazar still not 100 percent; will not pitch in ALCS for Cleveland Indians |

“I don’t think so, I really don’t,” said manager Terry Francona, when asked if Salazar was an option to appear in the ALCS. “I don’t think he’s progressed to that point. He’s doing pretty well, but he’s not back to throwing all his pitches or letting it go at 100 percent.

The playoffs’ most important innings were decided in July | New York Post

Imagine a Cubs vs. Indians World Series. One fanbase enjoys the euphoria of victory; the other fanbase adds another miserable failure to its bag of despair.

The Indians last won in 1948. And, you might have heard about this one: The Cubs haven’t won since 1908, or the year the world first got the electric mixer.

Padres’ Tyson Ross Out 4-6 Months Due To Shoulder Surgery

Why didn’t this happen earlier in the year?

San Diego Padres right-handed pitcher Tyson Ross is scheduled to undergo surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome on Thursday. The injury is expected to keep him out anywhere from 4-6 months, which leaves open the possibility that he could potentially return early in the 2017 season.

red sox - Why Red Sox are misreading situation by not picking up John Farrell’s option - WEEI | Rob Bradford

He’s coming back in 2017. I don’t agree with Bradford about 2018. If the players buy in and the team is successful next July, you can pick up the option. If the players don’t buy in and the team is playing below expectations, you can fire him.

Here’s what I’m getting at: Either the Red Sox are sold that John Farrell has earned the right to be the face of this franchise or he hasn’t. There’s no in between But that’s right where the Sox are trying to wedge this situation into.

They should have ...

#NatsRide Helps Fans Help Themselves After DC, Metro Snub Them

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser was asked whether she had a plan to get Nationals fans home from Thursday’s Game 5, which will likely end after Metro closes.

“Nats fans are amazingly persistent and creative, and we know that they’re going to plan ahead,” Bowser said.

Yes. Yes, they are. And they have. Before Bowser’s unhelpful response to an important question, Nationals fans were making and sharing alternative transportation plans using the hashtag #NatsRide on Twitter.

WTOP: Train waits for no fan: Metro won’t extend service for Nats game

Metro is beyond awful. No wonder thousands of commuters would rather get stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic above ground than deal with the bullshit on the rails.

As part of the 24-hour track-work program that began this spring, Metro no longer extends its hours for games, concerts or special events, and Metro says the Nats’ game Thursday is no exception.

Game 5 of the National League Division Series starts at 8:08 p.m., and Metro closes at midnight, making it likely that fans will need to ...

Will Clark has a complicated Baseball Hall of Fame case

Playing nine years in Candlestick did Clark few favors. “The wind switched around all the time,” he said. “One minute it was blowing in from left, the other it was blowing in from right. One minute, it’s blowing out to right-center.”

Clark had to look for other strategies as a hitter in San Francisco, between the wind and his manager his first seven seasons, Roger Craig, deliberately having the infield grass cut high to encourage more double-play balls.

“Playing in Candlestick, it didn’t ...
