Giants acquire left-handed reliever, but at a huge price - San Francisco Chronicle

The Giants filled one of their biggest needs Monday, acquiring left-handed setup man Will Smith from the Brewers, but the cost was enormous.

A source confirmed the Giants will send Milwaukee 2015 first-round draft pick, right-hander Phil Bickford, and catcher Andrew Susac.

Bickford, 21, has struck out 105 batters in 93 innings at two Class A levels this season and was considered a future cornerstone for the rotation. That the Giants would deal him for a reliever suggests how much the Giants ...

BenFred: Introducing the Stick To Sports Compromise | Ben Frederickson | stltoday.com

I am all for this compromise.

Anyway, as the self-appointed chairman of the Stick To Sports Committee on Oversight and Reform, I would like to officially announce a proposal that will build a towering wall between sports and politics. It’s a treaty of sorts, an olive branch that will benefit the public more than anything since the invention of the National Political Do Not Contact Registry. It’s the Stick To Sports Compromise.

The promise: We, the sportswriters, will stick to sports — as ...

The Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) is holding their annual convention in Miami, Florida.

Part of the convention agenda was a session of interviews with four high-profile baseball personalities from the present and the past. MLB.com reporter Barry Bloom interviewed Barry Bonds, Andre Dawson and Don Mattingly.

My first in this series of four articles focused on the Bonds interview. Today I will feature the responses given by Hall of Famer and former Cincinnati Reds RBI machine ...

Orioles acquire LHP Miley from Mariners

Seattle received left-hander Ariel Miranda in the trade. The Cuban pitcher has spent most of the year with Triple-A Norfolk. He appeared in one game for Baltimore on July 3 at Seattle, allowing three runs and four hits in two innings.

‘‘Ariel Miranda is a power left-handed pitcher with a four-pitch mix that is major league ready that provides us with flexibility,’’ general manager Jerry Dipoto said in an email. ‘‘We are very excited for what he can bring to the Mariners.’‘

OTP 2016 August 1: The haiku intersection of baseball and politics

I spent most of that part of the game watching the current and future Vice Presidents give their convention speeches. Biden pointing out - in what was likely his last major address as an elected official - that Donald Trump “doesn’t have a clue”, and Kaine doing his moderately impressive impression of the Republican nominee. Sandwiched between them was a genuine billionaire, Michael Bloomberg, advising America to “elect a sane, competent person” instead of the self-proclaimed billionaire the ...

Why isn’t Milwaukee’s Jonathan Lucroy catching for the Cleveland Indians today? | cleveland.com

And, of course, he’d have to live in Cleveland.

No.1.

Lucroy and his agent, according to industry sources, wanted the Indians to decline his 2017 club option worth $5.25 million and make him a free agent after this season. The Indians, in effect, would be giving up three of their valued prospects for a two-month rental.

There was some talk about an extension, but when the Indians found out that Lucroy really wanted to be a free agent, they said no to the extension. They felt they were giving ...

The Yankees moves have been pretty, pretty good.

After shipping Aroldis Chapman to the Cubs for Adam Warren and three prospects, including shortstop Gleyber Torres (No. 26 on MLBPipeline.com’s Top 100 Prospects list), and then spinning Andrew Miller to the Indians for a four-prospect package headed by outfielder Clint Frazier (No. 24) and left-hander Justus Sheffield (No. 95), the Yankees have arguably the best and deepest farm system in the game. Trade Deadline storylines across Major Leagues | MLB.com

Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy rejected a trade that would have sent him to Cleveland, and now Milwaukee has resumed dialogue on Lucroy with Texas. If a deal is completed, MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan has reported that slugger Joey Gallo—the Rangers’ top prospect according to MLB Pipeline—would likely be involved. Other names to watch in such a trade are Double-A pitchers Luis Ortiz (the Rangers’ No. 3 prospect) and Yohander Mendez (No. 4).

Worst Trade Deadline Deals Ever Made

When a contender takes the plunge on a deal before the Trade Deadline, it hopes for the best, believing these additions can help put the team over the top. But there is almost always risk involved, and sometimes a move comes back to bite.

As this year’s non-waiver Deadline approaches, here are the 10 deals that have backfired the worst on a contending club, since the Deadline moved to July 31 in 1986 (this year it falls on Aug. 1).

Athletics Go For New Approach With Eibner-for-Burns Deal - TKB

In a surprise early-deadline move, the Oakland A’s and the Kansas City Royals swapped a pair of outfielders on Saturday. The Athletics sent 26-year-old Billy Burns to the Royals for 27-year-old Brett Eibner.

Managers’ insane strategy for winning games: Forget the win | New York Post

This is one of the dumbest sentences ever.

The reason: Winning baseball is being de-emphasized! Winning pitching is being lost to ridiculous bullpen strategies that remove effective starters after six or seven innings for no better reason than to further feed a formula founded on rabbit’s-foot fantasy.

Royals closer Wade Davis returns to Kansas City for MRI | The Kansas City Star

This doesn’t sound good.

Royals closer Wade Davis left the team and took a flight back to Kansas City on Saturday night to undergo an MRI on his sore right arm, a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed to The Star.

The news sent shockwaves through baseball just two days before the non-waiver trade deadline, ending the speculation that Davis might be flipped for prospects before Monday. For the Royals, a franchise snake-bit by injuries in 2016, the alarm bells sounded once more.
