End the Home Run Derby

Major League Baseball’s Home Run Derby, set for Monday, is a tedious monstrosity of batting-practice gluttony, a swing-killing relic of the steroid era. It is an elephantine affront to the grace, agility and precision of the game….the allure — along with the ratings, which last year were the lowest recorded since 1997 — is gone….

And mega-stars such as Miguel Cabrera, Mike Trout and Colorado Rockies standouts Nolan Arenado and Troy Tulowitzki want no part of it. Chicago Cubs manager Joe ...

The ‘glove-stealing’ flameout — and Mexican revival — of Yanks’ next ‘Mantle’ | New York Post

A reminder that the next big thing might not be.

Of course, far from all of Sunday’s participants will attain their full potential, and the game’s poster boy for untapped promise — or wasted talent, as some might put it — would’ve stood alongside A-Rod and Jeter in that hypothetical ’95 game.

As a matter of fact, if you’re not familiar with the tale of Ruben Rivera — No. 2 on that ’95 list, right behind A-Rod and two ahead of his Yankees teammate Jeter — you can go see him ...

Best tools to be on display in Futures Game | MLB.com

The Futures Game’s best tools.

Fastball

U.S.: Lucas Giolito, Nationals (80). With all of the velocity that will be on display, Giolito has the only 80 fastball, an upper-90s (you might see triple digits) heater that stands out even more because of his abilty to command it.

World: Frankie Montas, White Sox (70). Montas has touched triple digits and could do so again on Sunday in his short stint, with many feeling he might belong in the bullpen long-term.

Robin Ventura’s faith in White Sox is being rewarded - Chicago Tribune

The White Sox haven’t given up yet.

“They just go out and pitch well,” Ventura said. “I don’t know what they’re expecting when they go out there, but they know their room for error might be a little (slim). But they’re continuing to battle. With what (Samardjiza) did (Thursday) and what the kid ( Rodon) did (Friday) … I think it’s great for him to come and pitch in this environment and do what he did.”

Sale has been so brilliant of late that allowing one run while striking out 10 on Saturday ...

Nick Cafardo | Sunday Baseball Notes: Five teams that need to beat the MLB trade deadline - Sports - The Boston Globe

A bunch of notes.

Longtime Red Sox coach, minor league manager, and special assistant Dick Berardino has heard once too often how the Sox and the late Lou Gorman were fleeced on the Jeff Bagwell-Larry Andersen deal in 1990. Berardino was a coach on Joe Morgan’s staff and defends Gorman to this day. “It was the right thing at the right time,” said Berardino. “Andersen really helped us that year (15 appearances, 1.23 ERA in 22 innings) win the AL East division. I really get tired of people ...

Sunday Notes: Drafting Aiken, Yankees, Marlins, more | FanGraphs Baseball

Rob Refsnyder made his major league debut last night, starting at second base for the Yankees against the Red Sox at Fenway Park. Before the game, I asked the highly-regarded 24-year-old how he’s preparing for his at bats against Eduardo Rodriguez.

“I was just looking at the scouting report,” said Refsnyder. “I like seeing what a fastball is doing – I looked to see if it’s moving – and I’ll go from there.”

For Refsnyder, a .290/.387/.413 hitter in Triple-A, things get simple ...

Rockies Q&A: GM Jeff Bridich on MLB trade deadline, Tulowitzki

Q: What is the percentage chance that Troy Tulowitzki is on your team next year?

A: (Laughs) I don’t know. What do you think it is?

Q: 95 percent chance? Wild guess?

A: I really don’t know. I think we’ll know more over the next two weeks.

Q: His situation has changed though. He’s been healthy. He’s hitting well.

A: To this point, yeah. He’s healthy. He’s basically playing most of the time, like he should be. We’ve given him regular rest, like we should, with any player who has played a lot ...

Marlins Lose Gordon to Thumb Injury in 14-3 Win Over Reds - The New York Times

Gordon was hurt leading off the seventh inning when he slid headfirst into first base for an infield single, the first of a record nine consecutive hits as Miami won 14-3.

Gordon will miss the All-Star Game but might be sidelined only a week or two. X-rays were negative, and there was no apparent ligament damage, the Marlins said.

Bumgarner and Joe Panik are in the City by the Bay and Paul Goldschmidt is in Phoenix. Nolan Arenado is in Denver, and Moustakas, Salvador Perez and Eric Hosmer are in Kansas City. Why MLB Can’t Stop the Dodgers From Spending Truckloads of Money on International Free Agents: A Guide

When MLB first implemented these rules, the expectation was that we’d see no more than a few million go into the league’s kitty, since the penalties would discourage teams from going over their budgets. After this most recent July 2 period, the penalty fund since the new system was put in place has now exceeded $80 million — and might even be considerably higher. Since nobody planned for this, nobody knows what to do with all of that cash. For now, it just belongs to Major League ...

Dozier’s denial exposes the system | FOX Sports

The All-Star game just isn’t the same. It used to be an event. Players in one league wanted to show the players in the other league that their team was better. It’s was also one of the only chances for fans to see players outside our home team’s league.

That’s not the way it is now. With interleague play, MLB.TV, and the games available on cable TV, we get to see any player just about any time we want. It’s also become a game with 1,000 players on the roster where everybody has to ...

Boston Red Sox forced to wait on status of Clay Buchholz’s elbow - Boston Red Sox Blog - ESPN

This doesn’t sound good. Hopefully, it’s not the worst.

Farrell warned that it was premature to speculate on Buchholz’s condition.

“There’s some tightness, some stiffness in the elbow area,” Farrell said. “He’s undergoing the full workup with imaging. Until we get any further information, that’s all we have right now.”

Woman injured by foul ball at Fenway | Local News - WCVB Home

I know it might be hard to believe but she was hit by a rocket by *Didi Gregorius*.

Others ducked on the foul ball before it hit her. You could tell by the bounce that the ball just skimmed her head. Now, I don’t know whether she was distracted or just had a slow reaction. What shocked me, however, is how quite a few fans in her section were still fixated on watching people attend to her while the game was still going on. If you are going to sit in seats that close to the action, you need to ...

Yanks finally call up sizzling, prized prospect Refsnyder | New York Post

The kid can hit a little bit but I will be shocked if he can hit enough to off-set that glove.

Infield coach Joe Espada said Refsnyder looked better in spring training than when he watched him last year as a scout.

“Compared with what I saw the previous season scouting, there were a lot of improvements with his maturity and decision-making on the field,” Espada said. “I’m looking forward to seeing what we’ve got.”

Could this be Dave Dombrowski’s final year as Detroit Tigers general manager? | FOX Sports

With the Tigers at the end of a good run, it might be a good time for Dombrowski to head to a new place.

One name that could be added to that list: Dave Dombrowski, the club’s president and general manager for 14 seasons.

Dombrowski’s contract expires at the end of October, and on Friday he declined to speak about his status when contacted by FOX Sports. However, major-league sources say there’s been no recent progress toward an extension for Dombrowski.

How Much Should You Believe in the Standings? - Jeff Sullivan

FanGraphs has published in-season projections for a few years. These projections account for changes to the team depth charts, so they’re updated from preseason team projections. I was able to access them using the Wayback Machine. The goal here: what’s more predictive, between three months of performance and updated team projections? I have just two years of data, meaning a team sample of 60, but we can at least see what’s there.

Conclusion isn’t surprising: standings are pretty predictive, ...

Statcast says Mookie Betts living up to hype | redsox.com

Some good stuff about Mookie Betts and Statcast. Although he links to Statcast leaderboards , the leaderboards don’t contain the info he’s referencing.

Of course, Betts’ contributions haven’t only been limited to offense. In his first season as the regular Boston center fielder, he ranks third among all outfielders with 13 Defensive Runs Saved, behind only Tampa Bay’s Kevin Kiermaier and Toronto’s Kevin Pillar. According to the Statcast™ leaderboards, he’s No. 1 among the 80 outfielders who ...
