With the way the team has played recently and the amount of talent in the farm system, I can’t help but feel Cherington did not deserve his fate.

Anibal Sanchez’s shoulder checks out OK |

All is good then.

The Tigers received good news on right-hander Anibal Sanchez Wednesday after his consultation with Dr. James Andrews. The noted orthopedic surgeon examined Sanchez’s sore right rotator cuff on Wednesday and saw no major structural damage.

“All good,” Sanchez’s agent, Gene Mato, said in a text message. “He said the shoulder looked great.”

Keokuk Daily Gate City, September 17, 1915:

A copy of a Denver paper with a story of the Labor day baseball games there between Denver and Lincoln has been sent to The Gate City and has some interesting dope on Snooks McGaffigan, former Indian shortstop. In the first contest McGaffigan made three hits, a double, a triple, and a home run. In the second game he made three hits and two runs.

This performance was in no way historically significant, but “Snooks McGaffigan” is a wonderful name and I ...

Jered Weaver gets ejected for being a jackass | HardballTalk

I would have hit him too. Craig misses the part where Seager grabs his crotch right when he called time first and before he tells Weaver to throw it over the plate.

In this instance I blame the umpire for not stepping in and telling Seager to get in the box. It was perfectly clear that Seager was purposely being disruptive. Had the umpire kept control of the game the ensuing events would not have happened.

“Truly, I love him as a manager. Flat out I absolutely do,” Harper said. “If I didn’t, everybody would know. Absolutely everybody would know. I’m not shy to say things. Being able to play for a guy like that that I can actually go up to him and talk to him about approach, at-bat to at-bat, and just being able to have the fire and intensity that he has, and the way he approaches every single day. He wants us to be perfect and I love that as a manager. I played for a guy like that in ...

How the Pirates stole Roberto Clemente from the Dodgers

Holy cow, Clemente next to Willie Mays in the outfield?

The Dodgers signed Clemente 15 months after Campanis first saw him. By then, the Giants, Braves, Red Sox and Cardinals had also expressed interest, according to David Maraniss’ biography “Clemente.” The Braves were serious bidders, reportedly offering the largest bonus ($25,000 to $35,000). But Maraniss writes that Clemente wanted to play in New York, where he had friends and relatives in the growing Puerto Rican community there. From ...

A’s Call Up Barry Zito

So the A’s on Wednesday called up Barry Zito, their former ace and Cy Young winner, from Triple-A Nashville. Zito, 37, had hoped for an MLB comeback this season when he signed a minor-league deal with the A’s, the team that drafted him in the first round in 1999.

Instead, Zito spent the year in the minors. He was 8-7 with a 3.46 ERA, a solid contributor but not sparkling enough to warrant a big-league call-up. Until now, that is.

This is likely an MLB farewell for Zito. The A’s — with ...

Ward Melville grad Steven Matz putting in extra work to get ready for Yankees | Newsday

How simple of an adjustment is it?

Warthen is trying to fix a flaw in Matz’s delivery that is causing his elbow to drop, resulting in stress on the joint as well as his shoulder. Warthen said it’s a byproduct of trying to throw too hard—Zack Wheeler has the same issue—and because both pitchers have had Tommy John surgery, the less strain on the repaired elbow, the better.

“It puts an incredible amount of torque on your elbow or shoulder,” Warthen said. “So we worry about that.”

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 9-16-2015

Milwaukee Journal, September 16, 1915:

Third baseman Red Smith of the Boston Braves ran into a pair of wallops on the jaw yesterday when he tangled with Umpire Byron at Chicago. Red had been riding the judge of play all during the afternoon and received a right and left to the jaw at the end of the battle. Byron has been in hot water all season, and a few weeks ago at St. Louis he had about 500 pop bottles tossed at him.

It’s not entirely clear those punches actually connected with Smith’s face, ...

The Physics of Wind at the Remodeled Wrigley Field – The Hardball Times

In summary, the winds within Wrigley are far too fickle to address the question of changes in wind pattern due to the remodel. We can get an estimate of the effect of the left field video board from our knowledge of the aerodynamics of the flight of a baseball making the unrealistic assumption that the new board completely blocks the wind.

The maximum effect is about a 10 foot change in home run distance for winds directed in from or out to left field. It will be less for other wind ...

West Palm Approves Site Plan for NatStros Spring Training Complex

Tom McNicholas, a representative for the teams, told the city commission the teams could not accept the conditions that city staff wanted. He said it will cost the teams $20 million to clear and prepare the 160-acre site, a former landfill south of 45th Street between Haverhill Road and Military Trail. “When we tell you we are having budget issues and we are running into problems, we really mean it,’’ he said.

Julio Franco update

The story Franco tells is that he’d like to spend the next 10 years managing in Japan, then 10 years managing in America, then three more years in a front office somewhere. At 80, he says, he’d be content to retire to a remote hillside somewhere, to grow his own food, make his own medicine and drink his matcha. The gap between that dream and this reality doesn’t seem to matter to him. He’s playing baseball.
