A.J. Hinch, Dave Roberts maintain friendship but become temporary enemies - Houston Chronicle

“It will be special,” the third-year Astros manager said. “Both of us have high compete buttons. There will be no dilemma on what we want the outcomes to be. But to share this experience with someone who I believe in and have such a personal bond with is really unbelievable.”

The friendship between Hinch and Roberts dates to their tenures with San Diego. In September 2010, less than three months after he was fired as the manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks, Hinch resurfaced as the Padres’ vice ...

Cubs need to get their pitching in order or else this entire foundation could crumble | NBC Sports Chicago

“You don’t want to make a living or make a habit out of trying to solve your problems with high-priced pitching free agents,” Epstein said, “because over the long run, there’s just so much risk involved. It can really hamstring your organization.

“But we have a lot of players who have reasonable salaries who contribute an awful lot that might put us in a position to consider it going forward in the future.

“So I wouldn’t rule it out completely, and I wouldn’t rule it in. I ...

Statcast of the Day: Turner’s HR helped by heat

As we noted before the game, research has shown that every 10 degrees of temperature can add approximately 3.3 feet of distance to a batted ball, and the average temperature in Los Angeles at this time of year is 77 degrees. Because the temperature at the start of the game was 26 degrees higher, it was fair to expect that a fly ball on Tuesday could possibly go seven or eight feet farther than it might have on a regular Southern California evening.

Kind of surprising how big of an effect the ...

Yuli Gurriel has found a niche with Astros | MLB.com

According to Statcast™, Gurriel sported a .320 batting average, and slugged .583 with eight home runs during the regular season against sliders, ranking him fifth among 66 hitters with at least 100 at-bats decided on the pitch. He also hit well against fastballs, combining to hit .308 and slugging .484 with seven home runs against four-seamers, two-seamers and sinkers during the regular season.
No matter the pitch, Gurriel hits the ball hard. He has always hit the ball hard.

FanRag Sports cuts more writers, emphasizes video, announces podcast partnership with LockedOn Network

Some interesting baseball writers got the axe. One interesting response is people calling for FanRag “to pay their writers”. I know BBTF isn’t really a business but…a lot of writers don’t seem to understand it’s fairly easy for a site to figure out whether the employee’s cost is greater than the revenue his content generates.

Former Braves employee comes to defense of John Coppolella | Atlanta Braves blog

Here is part of the email from the former Brave employee. Again, it was sent to me unsolicited.

My name is (name omitted by request)…. Just something I wanted to get off my chest about Coppy that hasn’t been mentioned by anyone’s sources, as it doesn’t relate to his firing.

In all of the criticism he has received for his conduct, which I won’t try to defend or even address as I don’t know nearly enough about them to have an opinion, I thought people should know how good Coppy was ...

Dodgers vs. Astros is a World Series for baseball’s Information Age – Orange County Register

It’s not your daddy’s Moneyball.

The Dodgers and Houston Astros are playing in the World Series this week. But this is also the Proprietary Information Super Bowl.

Fifteen years into the post-Moneyball era, an analytics department is as essential to a major-league team as fungo bats and sunflower seeds. In the early 2000s, the disparity between the sophisticated and the unsophisticated was wide. Not anymore, every team now searches for advantages in algorithms and metrics, taking the data ...

Emma Span: A Rival Scout Breaks Down the Astros Ahead of the World Series

Houston won the ALCS because they used starters in their bullpen. They didn’t use relievers. It’s not sustainable. I don’t know what they’re gonna do, I really don’t. I’m not going to be terribly shocked if Dallas Keuchel pitches three times, or Justin Verlander does … Houston has struggled on the road, obviously. They’re more comfortable in their ballpark, which is a hitter’s paradise.

Multi-year park factor for Minute Maid Park: 91. As of last winter, it was the best ...

The season never ends of Marlins’ Ichiro Suzuki

On the night the season ended — a Sunday — Suzuki said he returned to his Miami Beach residence and began working out on the custom-made equipment he has set up in his home.

He returned to the ballpark on Wednesday and has continued showing up there six days a week. It would be seven if not for the fact the ballpark is closed on Sundays, with no one to let him in.

“There’s never a day where I just sit at the house and just relax and do nothing,” he said. “There’s not a day like ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 10-24-2017

Washington Times, October 24, 1917:

If the big war is still under way next summer, it is more than likely that there will be no world’s series in 1918. The magnates are planning retrenchments all along the line, but another draft will so weaken the major league clubs as to make impossible the staging of a real series for the world’s title.

They did play a shortened season in 1918, but the World Series was unaffected.

Ray Knight Parties, Beats Up Friend

Fairfax County police responded to a call about a fight in the 7500 block of Ashby Lane around 4 a.m. Sunday after an argument between Knight and a 33-year-old acquaintance. After a verbal altercation, the fight became physical and both men had visible injuries, said Officer Kent Bailey with the Fairfax County Police Department.

There is no truth to the rumor that 33-year-old Dan Kolko bit Ray Knight’s hand.

Mets name Callaway as next manager

Despite their 2017 struggles on the mound, the Mets remain a team built upon pitching. As such, the Mets have imported an expert to replace Terry Collins, hiring Indians pitching coach Mickey Callaway as the 21st manager in team history on Monday.

Callaway will be introduced at a 4 p.m. ET news conference at Citi Field, which will be streamed live on MLB.com and mets.com.

World Series 2017: The inside story of how the Houston Astros won the American League

The plan included its bumps. All paths to a championship do. The Astros whiffed on draft picks. They let go of players who blossomed elsewhere. The baseball establishment clowned them for titles – the brilliant Sig Mejdal, Luhnow’s consigliere, was named “director of decision sciences” – and for their reticence to part with the prospects they had hoarded and for believing they could use the mountain of data available to tell them the things traditionally in the purview of scouts. If ...

OTP 23 October 2017: Dave Zirin discusses how race, politics, culture impact sports

“There was a mammoth gap between what I thought about sports history and what actually was sports history,” Zirin said.

He spoke about athletes like Jackie Robinson who, in addition to becoming the first African-American to play in Major League Baseball, was an important figure in the civil rights movement alongside Martin Luther King Jr., ...

Yankees’ next youth revolution is already in motion | New York Post

“We’re like 28 other clubs,” Cashman said. “We’re in that pile of ‘What’s next?’ ”

Looking Back At Five Great Baseball Moments At RFK Stadium

Sunday night was quiet around the baseball world in anticipation of the World Series, but it was also quietly the end of a small era connected to the sport’s history. Robert F. Kennedy Stadium, which was previously home to the Nationals and the second iteration of the Washington Senators, bid farewell to its last tenant, Major League Soccer’s D.C. United club.

And the movable left field stands were a-bouncin!

WaPo: d MLB’s newest managers are Red Sox’s Alex Cora and Mets’ Mickey Callaway

The World Series has yet to get underway, but a pair of MLB teams have already found new managers for the 2018 season. On Sunday, the New York Mets reportedly tabbed former Cleveland Indians pitching coach Mickey Callaway to fill their vacancy, while the Boston Red Sox went with Alex Cora, who is a bit tied up at the moment as the World Series-bound Astros’ bench coach.

Petriello: Bregman’s split-second call preserves shutout

With apologies to Judge, this is the defensive play everyone not named Sterling and Suzyn will remember.

...Given the risk involved, and the fact that Bregman was already facing home plate and would have needed to turn his body to throw back to second, he made the right decision.

That’s in part because of past experience. Speaking to FS1’s postgame show, Bregman referenced a similar opportunity against the Angels on Sept. 24, except that time, he did try for two. It didn’t go well, as he got ...

Astros’ Justin Verlander named ALCS MVP after two dominant starts vs. Yankees

The Astros are the American League pennant winner, thanks in part to a 4-0 (box score) Game 7 ALCS win over the Yankees on Saturday night. Among the post-game housekeeping items is naming an MVP and MLB has done so, with starting pitcher Justin Verlander taking the honors.

In two starts in the series, Verlander was 2-0 with a 0.56 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 21 strikeouts in 16 innings.
