College pitcher sacrifices his senior season to save a boy he’s never met | For The Win

Last October, when University of South Carolina Beaufort senior pitcher Jason Boulais had his cheek swabbed to enter the donor pool for the Be The Match bone marrow registry, he had a strange feeling that his name would come up one day.

“I told my dad about it, and we both just had a gut feeling I was going to be the one,” Boulais said to USCBathletics.com. “Reality kind of set in when I got the first phone call saying I might be a match.”

Boulais was a match, and after getting his ...

The New York Times: The Common Man’s Crown

“Until the late 1970s, wearing a ball cap anywhere but on the baseball field carried with it a cultural stigma,” James Lilliefors writes in his book “Ball Cap Nation,” citing the Mets cap of the “Odd Couple” slob Oscar Madison as one example of its signaling mundane degeneracy. In Lilliefors’s reckoning, eight factors contributed to the cap’s increased legitimacy, including the explosion of television sports, the maturation of the first generation of Little League retirees and ...

Do Hitter Hot/Cold Streaks Matter for Daily Fantasy Baseball?

Worth a read.

There is nothing to gain from adding recent game performance into the hitter projection mix and one should not choose a lesser-projected player over another because they have done well in previous games. Assuming equal Hittertron (or DFSBot) projections and both hitters are starting that next day, choosing the ‘hotter’ player is perfectly fine. As is choosing the hitter who has performed better against the opposing pitcher. Or choosing the hitter whose last name comes first ...

Get ready for Opening Day with MLB players reciting the ‘Field of Dreams’ speech | MLB.com

It’s now been twenty years since my father passed. Although I know the movie is a little hoke, I still get choked up when Ray asks his father to play catch.

You know the “Field of Dreams” speech in your bones. You’ve recited it hundreds of times in the mirror, on your way to work, when lying in bed, wishing you could have a catch in the backyard with Dad. If you haven’t already done it, you’ve at least long considered getting a “The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball,” ...

Adidas takes shot at Chicago Cubs with Kris Bryant ‘Worth The Wait’ billboard across from Wrigley Field

On Friday, Adidas unveiled a billboard across from the famous Wrigley marquee featuring the 23-year-old third baseman with the text “Worth The Wait.”

Aaron Kahn, director of baseball for Adidas, played down the tension that the sign might create with the tenants on the other side of Addison Street.

“We just wanted to make sure to tell the folks in Chicago that they have a great thing coming,” Kahn told ESPN.com.

Kahn said his team had long decided to buy a billboard and feature Bryant on it, ...

The Angels cut six players after Friday’s game, optioning starter Andrew Heaney and infielders Josh Rutledge, Grant Green and Kyle Kubitza to Triple-A Salt Lake, and reassigning reliever Scott Snodgress and power hitter Marc Krauss to the Minor Leagues.

The Angels’ Spring Training roster is now at 32 players. Snodgress and Krauss will be with the team at Dodger Stadium on Saturday, for the finale of the Freeway Series, but won’t make the Opening Day roster.

The one liability keeping Yanks’ stud prospect from majors | New York Post

Yes, making a lot of errors is a liability. He doesn’t need to have the best range. He needs to be able to make most of the routine plays.

Refsnyder started at second base Thursday and went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. In his first full Grapefruit League, he has a terrific .357/.460/.548 slash line over 24 games. He also has committed six errors — hence the talk of “finishing off” the original outfielder who converted to second base in 2013.

MLB clears Jarred Cosart of betting on baseball

After concluding its investigation, Major League Baseball has determined Miami Marlins pitcher Jarred Cosart never bet on baseball.

Cosart was fined for his involvement with illegal bookmakers, but it was determined that he placed bets on other sports. Shortly after MLB’s statement was released, Cosart responded with his own, via the Houston Chronicle.

“I have never, nor would I ever, bet on the great game of baseball. Major League Baseball conducted a thorough investigation and I ...

Robothal: Josh Hamilton deserved better than the public trial he got

The more I think about it, the more appalled I am that we even knew that Josh Hamilton faced a possible suspension from baseball. The leaks, wherever they came from, violated the confidentiality that players are promised under the Joint Drug Agreement. And now that an arbitrator has ruled that Hamilton did not violate the JDA by voluntarily informing baseball of his relapse, who will apologize to him for the public embarrassment and humiliation he has endured?

Baseball disagreed with the ...

Ervin Santana suspended 80 games

Smell the suspension.

Minnesota Twins pitcher Ervin Santana has been suspended for 80 games, Major League Baseball announced Friday.

Santana was suspended after testing positive for stanozolol, a performance-enhancing substance. The suspension is effective for the first 80 games of the regular season.

He was 14-10 with a 3.95 ERA in 2014 after signing a one-year contract with the Atlanta Braves. Santana parlayed a successful season into a four-year, $55 million deal with the Twins.

ESPN:Arbitrator: MLB can’t punish Josh Hamilton

- Los Angeles Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton cannot be disciplined by Major League Baseball for his latest problems involving alcohol and a drug of abuse, an arbitrator ruled Friday.

MLB said it disagreed with the decision made by an arbitrator appointed under its joint drug program with the players’ association. MLB said in a statement it “will seek to address deficiencies in the manner in which drugs of abuse are addressed under the program in the collective-bargaining process.”

The Man They Love To Hate: Why is it so easy to dislike Bryce Harper?

Here he comes again, full bore, the only gear he knows, like the baseball version of a top fuel car. When Bryce Harper answers a question, just as when he chases a fly ball to a wall or zooms helmetless around the base paths—with the most vigorously windblown hair since Pete Rose’s—he fairly leaves in his wake the aromas of spent nitromethane, burned rubber and exhaust smoke, which is to say, he wears the scent of danger like cologne.

Baseball teams use in-depth data to win

There’s a revolution going on in baseball.

If you’re nodding your head and muttering “Moneyball,” then you, my friend, are hopelessly behind the curve.

That best-selling book, now more than a decade old, examined how the Oakland Athletics used data analysis to gain a competitive advantage. New statistics — with acronyms like WAR, BABIP, and FIP — begin to move out of the realm of hardcore number crunchers and into the mainstream.

Some fans have embraced the new science, commonly referred ...

Tigers put Justin Verlander on DL

Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander will start the season on the disabled list but likely won’t be out of action for long, manager Brad Ausmus said Thursday. Verlander, who had been scheduled to make his first start of the season Wednesday, has been dealing with a sore triceps and has been throwing lightly in an attempt to work out the tightness.

The 32-year-old Verlander, a six-time All-Star selection, went 15-12 last season with a 4.54 ERA and 159 strikeouts. Verlander is 28-24 in two ...

Braves trade for Diamondbacks starting pitcher Cahill | www.ajc.com

Cahill’s changes for a bounce back year won’t be hurt by Simmons and Peterson at short and second.

Despite his 3-12 record and 5.61 ERA in 2014, the Braves think Cahill, 27, can have a bounce-back season working with pitching coach Roger McDowell, who’s had a lot of success getting other sinkerballers back on track in the past.
