One surprise (and one money) reason Marlins want Ichiro back | New York Post

With the healthy return of Giancarlo Stanton, will Ichiro be able to get enough AB to reach 3000 hits? He has 89 hits in 368 AB this year. Although he should get a few more in the last couple of weeks, he’ll probably need about 60 hits next year. If he hits .250, he’ll need 240 at bats to get there.

Meet the Dodger who learned to have fun and provide serious value

“I think what you see is what you get,” Scott Van Slyke said of Turner. “He doesn’t have the stereotypical red-head, gets-angry, short-tempered thing. Because of that, he makes people around him better. He’ll sit with Joc and talk situational hitting. He’ll lighten the bench. You know there’s gonna be days you hate your job and you’re on the bench and you’re not hitting. That’s when you gotta find a way to enjoy it.”

Attitude over aptitude, that sort of thing. And then, ...

Valencia’s 2 Homers Lead A’s Over Fading Astros 4-3 - The New York Times

The Twins are one game back of the Astros. The Angels are two games. The Indians are three back. It’s pucker time in Houston.

Oakland’s Sonny Gray (13-7, 2.56) opposes former Athletic Scott Kazmir (7-10, 2.63) when the series continues Saturday. Gray is 4-2 with a 1.88 ERA in six career starts against the Astros. Kazmir, who was traded to Houston in July, allowed seven hits and four runs in a loss to Oakland on Sept. 8.

Joe Maddon compares Cardinals to Tony Soprano after Rizzo hit

“I’m really disappointed in what the Cardinals did right there,” Maddon said after the game. “We did not hit their guy on purpose. That was an absolute mistake.

“To become this vigilante group that wants to get their own pound of flesh, that’s absolutely insane, ridiculous and wrong. We don’t start stuff, but we will stop stuff.”

Starter Mat Latos, acquired July 30, designated for assignment by Dodgers

Money to burn….

Pitcher Mat Latos will not finish the season with the Los Angeles Dodgers after the team designated him for assignment on Thursday.

Latos, a right-hander who arrived from the Miami Marlins as part of a 13-player trade on July 30, has struggled in almost all of his appearances since the trade. He finishes his time with the Dodgers with an 0-3 record, 6.66 ERA and 31 hits allowed in 24⅓ innings.

Latos is set for free agency this offseason after signing a one-year deal with ...

Rival major league scouts sound off on the state of Seattle’s Mariners | The News Tribune

Not very complimentary.

Is there a viable in-house partner for catcher Mike Zunino?

“Is that a serious question?” one scout asked. “If they had a truly legit guy anywhere in the system, they’d have sent Zunino to the minors in May.”

From another: “They had that guy in (Welington) Castillo, and they traded him (to Arizona). Now, I’m a (Mark) Trumbo guy. I’d rather have Trumbo (than Castillo) unless I really needed a catcher. They really need a catcher.”

From a third: “They ...

Pittsburgh Gazette Times, September 18, 1915:

Umpire Rigler gave the double-header [between the Pirates and Giants] an unusual feature when he chased 19 New York players including Manager John McGraw to the club house for their actions following a disputed strike decision in the second game.
Grant flied out, and as he was passing Umpire Rigler on the way to the New York bench he made some remarks to the official. A few minutes later, Rigler halted the game and gave McGraw the sign to leave ...

Rewind: Beane says Semien could fit anywhere on the diamond | CSN Bay Area

His improved play might not be enough to keep him at the position, however.

But it’s really been a tale of two halves for the East Bay native. Just six of those errors have come in the 51 games since the All-Star break. In watching Semien on a regular basis, it’s clear he’s handling shortstop with more confidence and fluidity over the second half. His athleticism has been on display on some highlight-worthy plays recently, including a terrific stop in the hole against the White Sox on ...

NY Times: Omar Minaya’s Fingerprints Are All Over These Mets

Let’s take a stroll around the current Mets infield. That big power-hitting lug Lucas Duda at first base? He was a Minaya-era draft pick, as was second baseman Daniel Murphy, whose hands are iron-coated but whose bat is gold-plated. Shortstop Ruben Tejada, completing a smart comeback year, was a find from Panama.

Wilmer Flores, Citi Field’s own Fountain of Tears, plays shortstop and second and swings a handsome bat. Minaya’s scouts signed Flores in Venezuela when he was 16.

Minaya’s ...

Theo Epstein says he proposed making MLB’s Wild Card a best-of-three series | For The Win

Don’t like having your season decided by one game? Win your division. I greatly prefer this setup to the old one where the only drawback was one less playoff game.

And so the Cubs, even if they end up with a better record against better competition than the majority of division winners, will likely see their season reduced to a single road game in Pittsburgh. And the Pirates, for owning the second-best record in the sport despite playing the Cardinals 18 times, risk seeing their postseason end ...

Meanwhile, the Dodgers traded for Johnson, Mat Latos and Wood. Latos still hasn’€™t won a game, and Wood had pitched poorly before Wednesday night. Johnson’€™s been a disaster.

Oh, and the Dodgers are 7 ½ games ahead of the Giants.

Their big moves didn’€™t work at all, and all they’€™ve done is run away and hide.

Which should be the real takeaway here.

Yoenis Cespedes to Mets: Dombrowski recounts his side of story

The Tigers had heard only intermittently from the Mets. Dombrowski assumed that was because they were getting Gomez from the Brewers. But that deal fell apart, and when Alderson called Friday, he said: “We really want to go after Cespedes.”

“I’m sure he was working on other things,” Dombrowski said. “[Justin] Upton’s name was out there, a couple of others. At one point we didn’t know what his priority was, but he kept in contact with me, and it really came down to the Mets had the best package ...

Are the New York Mets mismanaging Matt Harvey?

This is my concern. A one-time skip in the rotation can be a nice breather. Throwing less pitches per start, especially with so many breaks in between, might increase his risk of being injured if he’s later pushed in the playoffs. Why? Not throwing as much over the last few weeks of the season will ultimately reduce his overall strength and stamina.

We did an informal survey of a group of sports-medicine professionals, a couple of whom would not agree to be interviewed about a player who isn’t ...
