Jon Lester has a long way to go to get back to being himself - Chicago Tribune

Maddon and Epstein both said before the game they weren’t concerned about Lester’s move becoming an issue. Maybe, but now Lester’s “dead arm” issue from spring training has led to a poor start to his Cubs career.

“It might take him a little while to get into a good routine yet, but I have no doubts he will,” Epstein said.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 4-14-2015

Pittsburgh Press, April 14, 1915:

A few lines from the Pacific coast chronicle the death of one of the greatest ball players the game has known. His skin happened to be black and he never shone in the majors, however. He was [Bill] Monroe, an infielder, who went to the coast with Rube Foster’s negro team…Those who have seen him play say he was a Lajoie and a Wagner combined.

I was stunned to learn that Monroe isn’t in the Hall of Fame. That’s a traveshamockery.

Monroe was indeed one heck of a ...

Mets fans set to flock to see Matt Harvey’s return to Citi - NY Daily News

The Harvey Effect has definitely impacted the Citi Field ticket sales, as the attendance for Tuesday’s game is expected to be near 40,000. Monday’s home opener was the second largest crowd at Citi Field (43,947) behind the 2013 All-Star Game. Once fans figured out how the rotation would unfold on the team’s 10-game homestand, tickets for Harvey’s starts have spiked. The attendance for his scheduled Sunday start is expected to be near 40,000 as well.

Mike Trout may be a weather geek

In which a Reddit user discusses his theory that Mike Trout really wants to be a meteorologist.

I developed this theory by spending a day looking through all of Trout’s photos on Twitter ... and I saw a pattern start to form. I saw the Trout tweeted about weather rather often, and has been for a while.

Another user notes that on Twitter “Trout follows 17 different meteorologists and 20+ weather related accounts.”

Blue Rocks eye move to Double-A next season

Wilmington could be the home of a Double-A Eastern League franchise as early as 2016, a possibility revealed earlier this month because of a legal matter involving the potential sale of the Binghamton Mets.

The late Matt Minker, who founded the Blue Rocks and built Frawley Stadium for their 1993 rebirth, long envisioned Wilmington’s location and metropolitan population as ideal for an Eastern League franchise. He nearly secured one for a move several years before his death in 2007.

Now his ...

Hidden-ball trick during Triple-A game leaves broadcasters in silent confusion

You can judge the quality of a hidden-ball trick by the number of seconds of dead air it produces from the broadcast booth while everyone is trying to figure out what just happened. In this case: 16 seconds.

ESPN: Billboards near Citifield urge Wilpons to sell team.

Gary Palumbo, a 39-year-old Mets fan who lives in New London, New Hampshire, raised $6,700 on Kickstarter to pay for the placards. He was frustrated when the owners cut spending as they dealt with the fallout from the Bernard Madoff Ponzi scheme. Now he’s angry the Mets maintain a payroll similar to those of middle-market teams, even though they say they hope to contend with a club buoyed by the return of star pitcher Matt Harvey from elbow surgery.

“They asked us to be patient through the ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 4-13-2015

Pittsburgh Press, April 13, 1915:

Joe Jackson has suffered a nervous collapse as the result of his family troubles. Within the last 10 days he has lost 15 or 20 pounds in weight as the result of not eating and brooding over his troubles.

In an effort to get in shape after his layoff of nearly two weeks he worked throughout Saturday’s game at Columbus and looked like the same old Joe. Twice he sent Mensor back to the left field fence to capture his long drives. He got a single and a triple, his ...

Angell: Sox 6, Yankees 5, in Nineteen Innings

Anybody can stay up till one in the morning. What eats at you, numbs you, puts you into coma watching is the bottomless party: another pop-up, or another three-hop infield grounder that ends the inning and rolls around the next, on and on, perhaps forever. BB ad infinitum.

As stated, I’m glad I wasn’t there—and believe or strongly guess that the the later, game-tying Yankee runs were greeted by outer cheers and inner groans by some or many in pinstripes last night.

It’s all in ...

Pitchers boosting pace to slow running game : Sports

Good stuff.

The focus on getting to 1.2 seconds is simple math, a triangulation of the time it takes for the catcher to make a throw to second and the time it takes the runner to get there. As a catcher, Matheny wanted his “pop time” — the time it took to go from his mitt to the middle infielder’s glove at second — at less than 2 seconds. Hundredths of a second mattered. Yadier Molina has been known to throw in the 1.80s. The time left over has to be covered by the pitcher, and most ...

Jenrry Mejia tests positive for stanozolol, so what is it? - NY Daily News

Not a smart decision.

Four Major League Baseball players have tested positive for the anabolic steroid stanozolol since March 27, the most recent being Mets reliever Jenrry Mejia. The others are David Rollins of the Mariners, the Braves’ Arodys Vizcaino and Ervin Santana of the Twins.

M.L.B. Teams Nurture Players’ Mental Health - NYTimes.com

For Cubs General Manager Jed Hoyer, Josh Lifrak is just like the hitting coach John Mallee or the pitching coach Chris Bosio.

Lifrak is the director of the team’s mental-skills program, while Mallee and Bosio are two vital members of Manager Joe Maddon’s coaching staff. Hoyer looks at each of them in a similar way, and he knows what that means in terms of a shift in thinking when it comes to mental health and major league baseball.

“I think that it used to be the kind of thing that ...
