Steven Matz scratched from start vs. Phillies |

Hopefully Matz will be healthy for the playoffs. Does any Mets fan really want Bartolo Colon starting in the postseason?

Angry Baby Paul Molitor Yells At Jose Ramirez To “Get The Fuck Off The Field”

Although some want to paint such incidents as racism, I’m not so inclined. Sure, there are differences in the mores of baseball in different countries and cultures. But, every workplace has an embedded culture. When newcomers enter that culture they either integrate or change it. Neither outcome is necessarily intrinsically better.

After hitting a three-run home run to put the Indians up 10-1 on the Twins in the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader, Jose Ramirez had the sheer audacity to ...

OT Gaming: October 2015

RosePortal Games, the developer of an RPG called Epic Quest of the 4 Crystals recently got caught offering compensation—in the form of free Steam keys—in exchange for Steam reviews. When Valve found out, they weren’t pleased.

Yeah, nothing shady about that…

Anyway, here’s the start of monthly Gaming threads.

Wrigley rooftops’ lawsuit is dismissed; Cubs happy ‘this chapter closed’

Rancor grew after the Ricketts family purchased the team in 2009. The Ricketts family made offers to buy all of the rooftop businesses shortly after buying the team, according to court records in the case dismissed Wednesday.

The Ricketts has since acquired six rooftop businesses — all this year — as part of a campaign by Chairman Tom Ricketts to gain further control of the neighborhood streets surrounding the historic ballpark.

Besides McCarthy’s rooftop businesses, the only one along ...

OTP - October 2015: Political and baseball desperation

In politics, the survivors will learn their fate in New Hampshire, Iowa and other early 2016 primaries. In the dead of winter, survival is the name of the game. For Hillary Clinton, there is no next time. Simply desperation. She must win in 2016 or likely fade from the scene. It is hard to see a path to the nomination for any other Democrat, Bernie Sanders included.

For Republicans, the current chaos must lead to a viable challenger, but it remains a bit of a wild card. As September fades to ...

More comments from new Mariners’ general manager Jerry Dipoto on team needs, free agency vs. trades, tailoring a team to Safeco Field | The Seattle Times

Some good stuff here.

On playing in the same division as his former team, the Angels?

“I’m obviously very competitive. I care a lot about the players in that clubhouse, a lot of the people that make up that team. I spent four years of blood, sweat and tears helping to put it together. Now, like they will with me on this side, I’d like to go beat them. That makes them one of 28 others I’d like to go beat.”

I learned this from Kirk Gibson, who I worked with in Arizona. We were going in ...

The Great American Pitching Experiment: Why the Reds Won’t Stop Starting Rookies «

Meanwhile, losing this aggressively risks alienating fans: The Reds don’t have to go back very far to remember what the then-bottom-of-the-barrel Astros had to endure when it came to plummeting attendance and 0.0 TV ratings. When you see a star like Cole Hamels block a trade to Houston and opt to go to a division rival instead, it’s hard not to wonder if over-the-top levels of losing might sometimes leave a lasting stink on a franchise, even once that team starts to win again.9 Of course, ...

red sox - What to make of Rick Porcello and his future with Red Sox - WEEI | Rob Bradford

If Porcello hadn’t changed his pitching style, his overall numbers wouldn’t be so bad. Whose idea was it?

The Red Sox signed Porcello based off the potential he showed in 2014, a season which saw him go 15-13 with a 3.70 ERA over 204 2/3 innings. The idea was that at his age, it would only get better. It didn’t.

But if his run since coming off the 15-day disabled list is any indication—with Porcello now going 4-3 with a 3.22 ERA and 53.5 percent ground ball rate (compared to 43.8 percent in the ...

Extra Baggs: Buster Posey experiences a foreign feeling; Posey marvels at Kershaw; a productive out with the bases empty; classy words from one Dodger, etc. - Giants Extra

Some good Giants stuff including this nugget:

There wasn’t an opportunity for Tim Lincecum to acknowledge the fans, as he had hoped. But there’s still a chance he’ll be back this weekend.

In any event, a goodbye might not be necessary. The interest is mutual and strong to re-sign Lincecum, from what I’m told. It’s more a matter of when, how much and in what form, rather than if.

Mets fall to Phils despite 2 Duda home runs

Colon made just one significant mistake, allowing Darin Ruf’s three-run homer in the first inning. But that plus an RBI single from Aaron Altherr in the seventh was all the Phillies needed; starter David Buchanan gave them 4 2/3 innings of one-run ball and manager Pete Mackanin pieced together another 13 outs from his bullpen. The only blemish for Buchanan was Lucas Duda’s solo homer in the fourth. Duda added a two-run homer off Ken Giles in the ninth.

Lucas has had another very good year ...

Nightengale: Flaws create playoff parity party

An excuse to get our own pointless playoff prognostication program percolating.

All teams have flaws of course but there’s an AL team with a 223-run differential that’s scoring 5.5 r/g in this era and has a 46-19 post-AS record ... with 9 of those losses by just one run.  They may not win the WS but I don’t think there’s really much argument about which team was the best this year.
