Seeking help for the rotation, Pirates look inside the system and out | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

With Glasnow and Taillon and the options rumored to be out there, I can’t see the Pirates making a deal.

“A very good first half as a starter, and San Diego did a terrific job of turning that into a, some feel, top-20 prospect in the game,” Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said. “It reminds us that it’s a seller’s market and the acquisition costs are going to be steep.

“And it also reminds us that it’s really important to develop your own pitching.”

Sources: Dodgers are open to trading struggling Yasiel Puig | FOX Sports

It’s easy to forget how young he still is.

Perhaps the Dodgers will keep Puig, buying into his latest surge and banking on the fact that he is only 25. Or perhaps they finally are at wit’s end with his performance if not his personality, and will try to sell relatively high, assuming Puig does not regress in the next two weeks.

Baltimore Orioles, So Consistent, Crave Another Measure of Success - The New York Times

Thank Dan Duquette and Buck Showalter.

The Baltimore Orioles have the most victories in the American League in the last five seasons. Let that sink in for a moment.

A theory on Jake Arrieta’s downturn and why Cubs are optimistic about another comeback | CSN Chicago

So, the theory is that he’s not executing???

Since the beginning of June, Arrieta has a 4.81 ERA, the Cubs winning only three of those seven starts. Their ace has thrown 100-plus pitches five times during that stretch, and gone more than six innings just once.

“I just know that I’ve prepared, I’ve planned ahead (and) I have a good idea of what I want to accomplish,” Arrieta said. “Just try and focus on executing. I am confident with all of my stuff. It’s better than good enough to ...

Texas Rangers: The next step in Nomar Mazara’s development: Finding the way out of his first extended slump | SportsDay

Nice use of Statcast info.

While Mazara hasn’t changed his approach at the plate, pitchers seem to have made some changes to him. Mostly, they have taken to throwing more inside, Banister said. And they’ve also refused to give in when Mazara gets ahead in the count, throwing secondary stuff even when behind. Evidence: He’s been ahead in the count more often in the last month than in either of his first two in the majors.

The result: Mazara has gotten jammed more often, hit more ground balls and ...

The strange sensation of wanting Wilmer Flores in the lineup |

But…they have Jose Reyes now.

For nearly two months now, Wilmer Flores has been one of the best hitters on the team. Since coming off the DL in late May and getting regular playing time, Flores has posted a .293/.346/.537 line in 136 PA. If I didn’t see it with my own eyes, I wouldn’t have believed it. No one will ever confuse me for being a Flores fan. But right now, the Mets need his bat in the lineup on a regular basis.

Michael Conforto rejoined the New York Mets on Monday after a three-week stint in the minors. He may have returned as the team’s primary center fielder.

Zack Wheeler throwing bullpen sessions, sources say | Newsday

Zack Wheeler has been throwing bullpen sessions at the Mets’ complex in Port St. Lucie, according to multiple sources. They have yet to set a firm schedule, but the righthander’s progress signals that a minor-league rehab assignment could be approaching.

He has thrown off the mound three times, logging just under 30 pitches in his last session on Sunday. It’s an encouraging sign for Wheeler, whose comeback from Tommy John surgery has been derailed by setbacks. He likely will need a full ...

The case for Kyle Schwarber to the Yankees and other trade rumors

Would the Cubs trade him for Miller and Chapman?

“Cash thinks he can hit 50 home runs there,” one source with knowledge of the Yankees’ plans said, and, well, that isn’t altogether farfetched. Schwarber is a 30-home run hitter in any park, presuming he comes back from the torn ACL that has sidelined him almost all of 2016.

Report: Reducing MLB season to 154 games has ‘gained momentum’ - CBSSports.com

Maybe they should put a 10% or 15% across the board salary cut on the table to get it done.

According to David Lennon of Newsday, the idea of reducing the schedule to 154 games has “gained momentum” of late, as MLB and the MLBPA negotiate the new collective bargaining agreement. The current CBA expires on December 1, and there’s no indication a work stoppage is on the horizon, thankfully.

The biggest problem with reducing the schedule is the financial impact. Eight fewer games means four fewer ...

Rays offense stalls again in loss to Orioles (w/ video) | Tampa Bay Times

Moore pitched a season-high 7⅓ innings. He had gone exactly seven five times. He allowed five hits and struck out only one because he pitched to contact against an aggressive lineup. Shortstop J.J. Hardy’s two-run homer in the second accounted for the Orioles’ runs.

“I tell you, Moore was as good as Tillman,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. “That was two good pitchers at the top of their game. Fine margin of error.”

Scouts from the Dodgers, Rangers, Red Sox, Pirates and Nationals on ...

OTP 2016 July 18: Girls’ softball teams being shut out of city defibrillator policy, while boys’ teams given life-saving devices

Youth softball coaches are furious that their predominantly female leagues have been left out of a city law that gives free defibrillators to youth baseball leagues.

That new law, which Mayor de Blasio signed in May, provides a free automated external defibrillator for baseball leagues who play on city fields in case a kid gets hit with the hard ball in the chest.

“The law should cover all sports,” said Peter DeMauro, a longtime youth sports coach who currently coaches girls’ softball ...
