Mike Fiers of Houston Astros denies illegal substance on glove during no-hitter

One day after throwing a 134-pitch no-hitter against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Houston Astros right-hander Mike Fiers denied he had an illegal substance on his glove during the 3-0 win, shooting down speculation that began when photos on social media that zoomed in on the glove appeared to show a shiny substance.

Jaded Jose Reyes would welcome a trade from the Rockies - The Denver Post

Jose Reyes, winning over teammates since 2003.

He’s not interested in playing for a team that isn’t competitive. And the Rockies, on pace for another 95-loss season, likely aren’t interested in an aging, high-priced veteran. Colorado owes Reyes more than $56 million through the 2017 season. He’s now their highest-paid player.

“You come from a ballclub that was competing for a spot in the playoffs. And you come to a club in last place. You think about that,” Reyes said of the trade that ripped ...

Nick Cafardo | Sunday Baseball Notes: Who will Dave Dombrowski hire as Red Sox GM? - The Boston Globe

I love Mookie Betts. There is no way the Mets would trade Harvey for him, though. No. Way.

My suggestion of trading Xander Bogaerts for Matt Harvey has drawn interesting responses. Mets people hate it because Harvey is a movie star in New York. Red Sox people hate it because they love Bogaerts. Baseball executives mostly think the Mets would need to get more for Harvey. Fascinating discussion.

Philadelphia isn’t a good fit. Cherington has a patient, long-term mindset. In Boston, fans and ...

Astros, Dodgers try to be smart, but mistakes more affordable for L.A. - Houston Chronicle

At the core, being better at player evaluation than your opponent is the most important attribute of any great organization. Having a lot of cash, though, let’s you wallpaper over mistakes, at least in the short-term.

When Boston was in town in July, Ben Cherington was still its GM. In a long session with reporters, he made an observation related to his own failures.

“Every team’s talent is more evenly distributed,” said Cherington, who has since left the Red Sox. “Every team has access to ...

Influence of Don Zimmer renewed with Joe Maddon’s Cubs - Chicago Tribune

“The similarities are their vision and the way they’re able to think outside-the-box,” Cubs bench coach Dave Martinez said. “It’s pretty similar. ‘Zim’ was feistier. Joe is calmer. But the way they go about thinking, about doing different things, is similar.”

Mariners designate Rodney for assignement | MLB.com

Veteran reliever Fernando Rodney, who lost his closer’s role in Seattle two and a half months ago, was designated for assignment after Saturday’s 6-3 loss to the White Sox, as the Mariners made a flurry of moves to shuffle their beleaguered bullpen.

Rodney, 38, didn’t pitch Saturday, but has struggled all season and was 5-5 with a 5.68 ERA and six blown saves in 22 opportunities this season.

Grant: Adrian Beltre shows rarely seen part of self as he becomes all-time games played leader among Dominicans | Dallas Morning News

When Beltre was informed about 10 days ago that he was closing in on Julio Franco’s record of 2,527 games set over three decades, but seemed more like two centuries, he stopped the frown show for just a moment. He may have even let a small smile start to crack at the corner of his lips.

The moment arrives Sunday at Detroit when Beltre is expected to play in game No. 2,528 of his career over the course of an 18-year career that keeps adding Hall of Fame credentials almost by the week. Even ...

Jorge Posada has No. 20 retired by Yankees - NY Daily News

On the scoreboard, the Yankees posted a message from the 90-year-old Berra, who could not attend. In grand Berra fashion, the message contained humor, saying, in part, “I am very sad that I cannot be with you today, but my knees hurt too much. Just wait — one day, you’re knees are going to hurt, too!”

“I’m proud of you kid.”

Madden: Who’s the boss now? Helter-skelter dealing and spending by Dodgers and Red Sox make Yankees

Unbelievable.

As for Castillo (.286/.318/.415, three steals, three doubles in 46 games entering Saturday), he spent most of the season either at Triple-A or on the disabled list, obviously falling far short of the 2015 projections (31 doubles, 22 HR, 32 steals) by Bill James, Red Sox owner John Henry’s resident sabermetrics fraud. James, who ought to be Dombrowski’s first “exit velo” candidate, also projected Allen Craig — whom Cherington acquired last summer from the Cardinals with ...

NY Post: Sherman: Forecasting Harsh Fallouts from 10 Most Disappointing MLB Teams

6. Mariners

How can a team invest in Robinson Cano one offseason and Nelson Cruz in another, yet in 2015 be averaging fewer runs than it did in 2013 and the third-fewest in the AL? Even if GM Jack Zduriencik has an answer it might not matter. He is on tremulous ground, and that probably means manager Lloyd McClendon is as well.

Zduriencik has had three top-five picks in the draft — Dustin Ackley, Mike Zunino and Danny Hultzen – that have not worked out, nor has the salary infusion. ...

Astros Catcher Discusses Fiers’ No Hitter Against Dodgers

“His fastball’s only about 90,” Castro said. “But he pitches up in the zone effectively. His curveball is such that it looks like his fastball, like an up-in-the-zone fastball. He gets a lot of swings on it and he’s got pretty good depth on his curveball. So, I think kind of the play on those two pitches — that tunnel effect that (pitching coach Brent) Strom talks about a lot — he does that really well, and his changeup’s one of his better pitches that he could throw to righties ...

Nationals Disaster: Remember When Washington Was Supposed to Be the Best Team in Baseball? «

Ultimately, the story of the 2015 Nats is one of a team that’s had way more things go wrong than go right. Today, every major DL’d player is back and playing except Span, and that means the opportunity is still there for the stars of 2014 to come storming back. The season might look close to doomed, but if there’s any silver lining, maybe it’s this: We were so wrong about them to start the year, why couldn’t we be wrong again?

Facing Chris Sale of Chicago White Sox is a complete nightmare

“He’s that guy who, [when] you see he’s pitching, all of a sudden your hamstring gets tight or something,” Minnesota’s Brian Dozier says of Sale. “You don’t know if you can make it that game.”

“I try to save up any sick days or off days I have, and use them when he’s starting,” says Cleveland’s Jason Kipnis. “I’ve timed it up perfectly, I think, since 2013. If I had an off day coming up, I’d push it back a week until we were playing the White Sox and use it on him. I play dodgeball with him. ...

MLB announces a domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy

The treatment and intervention part will include the creation of a Joint Policy Board which will be responsible for evaluating a player and supervising the treatment of a player if treatment is deemed appropriate. If the player does not adhere to a treatment program, he will be subject to discipline.

Discipline will not carry a minimum or maximum penalty, but rather the Commissioner can issue the discipline “he believes is appropriate in light of the severity of the conduct.” Discipline ...

Umpires Are Less Blind Than They Used To Be

Umps are getting better, and they’re also remarkably consistent. An ump who makes more accurate calls in one year will likely do the same the next; an ump who misses more calls in a given season will likely be as bad the next. Umpire accuracy is more steady than a player’s batting average or a pitcher’s ERA, and as consistent as OPS (on-base plus slugging) and wins above replacement.

Also interesting: umpires lately have been calling more strikes strikes, while calling an equal rate of ...

Urban explorers find $1 million worth of collectable sports cards inside an abandoned factory in Detroit

A collection of sports cards estimated to be worth more than $1 million has been discovered in an abandoned warehouse in Detroit.

Millions of the Topps cards were packed away in dust-covered crates, with thousands more strewn over the floor of the derelict building.

The mint-condition collectibles, dating from the late 1980s and 90s, were discovered by a team of urban explorers whose hobby is to venture into forgotten man-made structures.

While only estimated to be individually worth ...
