Is criticism of Jon Lester’s pickoff move much ado about nothing?

I’m sure his opponents will work to prove whether this is a real issue or not.

Jenrry Mejia tests positive for stanozolol, so what is it? - NY Daily News

Not a smart decision.

M.L.B. Teams Nurture Players’ Mental Health - NYTimes.com

For Cubs General Manager Jed Hoyer, Josh Lifrak is just like the hitting coach John Mallee or the pitching coach Chris Bosio.

Lifrak is the director of the team’s mental-skills program, while Mallee and Bosio are two vital members of Manager Joe Maddon’s coaching staff. Hoyer looks at each of them in a similar way, and he knows what that means in terms of a shift in thinking when it comes to mental health and major league baseball.

“I think that it used to be the kind of thing that ...

Mets Insider: Terry Collins keeps faith in Wilmer Flores - NY Daily News

“He is going to play,” Collins said of Flores after the Mets’ 5-3 defeat Saturday night. “I am going to play Ruben (Tejada) tomorrow, but I knew going in Ruben was going to play on Sunday. I don’t think there is any set date (to judge how Flores is doing). I told him today, ‘Hey relax. Go play a game like you did in Florida. The thing I want you to understand is you are going to have good nights and bad, get over it and get ready to play the next day.’ ”

Angels owner’s stance in Josh Hamilton case puts players in tough spot

Wilson said he agreed with columnists who have written the Angels would be treating Hamilton differently if he was playing like the five-time All-Star he was in Texas and not the disappointing and oft-injured player he’s been in Anaheim, where Hamilton hit .255 with 31 homers in his first two seasons.

“Some of the commentators had a lot of insight — if the situation was this, it would be turned around and be different,” Wilson said. “Josh went through the whole process with an arbitrator. It ...

Phils prospect Valentin suspended following domestic arrest

Jesmuel Valentin, an infield prospect in the Phillies’ minor-league system, has been placed on Major League Baseball’s restricted list following a domestic violence incident in the Clearwater area last weekend, general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Saturday.

“He was arrested,” Amaro said. “Major League Baseball stepped in and suspended him indefinitely. We support the action and policies of the Commissioner’s office. As an organization we’re getting the young man some help, but we ...

Philly.com: Stan Hochman passes away at age 86

RIP.

Sadly, Philadelphia lost one of its literary legends when Hochman died at Bryn Mawr Hospital on Thursday after a recent illness. He was 86.

Hochman, according to Pat McLoone, managing editor of the Daily News, could be summed up in one word: “Great.”

“When you think that Stan Hochman came on the Philadelphia sports scene in the late ‘50s, made a mark right away and has been great, truly great, for more than 50 years, it really is overwhelming,” said McLoone, who was sports editor from ...

Rangers’ Holland, Choo, Rua injured vs. Astros

Derek Holland never looked right on the mound for the Texas Rangers in their home opener. Now he won’t be back there for at least six weeks—and maybe more.

Outfielders Shin-Soo Choo (back spasms) and Ryan Rua (sprained right ankle) also made early exits because of injuries. Choo was feeling better afterward, but Rua had a protective boot on his foot and could be headed to the disabled list.

The meaning of Matt Harvey’s excellent debut

In case that one doesn’t do it for you, you might prefer the third-inning at-bat, where Harvey whiffed Harper with a high fastball at 97. Or you could skip ahead to the sixth, where Harvey whiffed Harper with a high fastball at 96. Between Strasburg and Harper, the Nationals have two young stars who’ve generated near-unparalleled hype. Thursday, Harvey out-played them both. It was a rather emphatic way for the phenom to kick off what promises to be an electric campaign.

Robothal: Old Hoss Epstein?

Consider an incident that occurred Thursday night, when Epstein threw out the first pitch at the home opener of the Cubs’ new affiliate in South Bend, Ind.

As this video clearly suggests, Epstein threw at Cubs’ mascot Clark the Cub.

Robothal: Phillies need to get real if they want to deal Hamels to Red Sox

OK, can the Phillies stop asking the Red Sox about center fielder Mookie Betts and catcher Blake Swihart now?

So, is it over? Will the Phillies simply turn their attention to teams other than the Red Sox when trying to move Hamels? Or might the Phils come to their senses and target the next layer of prospects in the Sox’s bountiful farm system?

I would imagine that the Sox’s view of the Phillies’ stance can be summed up in two words: “Their problem.”

Derek Holland could miss two months with shoulder injury

The last thing the Texas Rangers needed was another injury in their starting rotation. Unfortunately, that’s exactly the hand they were dealt on Friday when left-hander Derek Holland exited the home opener against the Houston Astros with tightness in his left shoulder.

The diagnosis: A subscapular strain, which according to the Rangers means that Holland will be shut down completely for the next 4-6 weeks and may not be available again until late June or early July.

Jimmy Fallon avoids foul ball, chugs beer at Yankees’ game

Given that they play in New York, the Yankees tend to draw a fair amount of celebrity fans. That was the case Thursday, as “The Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon sat in the first row as the Yankees took on the Toronto Blue Jays.

In the seventh inning, Fallon can be seen avoiding a foul ball off the bat of Jacoby Ellsbury. Fallon loses his Yankees’ cap during the commotion. Following the play, Fallon took an opportunity to bow to the fans in the stadium. He then took a sip of his beer, toasting ...

Arte Moreno won’t promise Josh Hamilton will play again for Angels

Angels owner Arte Moreno said Friday he might try to enforce contractual language he says protects the team from a substance-abuse relapse by outfielder Josh Hamilton.

The owner also would not say that Hamilton would play another game for the Angels.

“I will not say that,” Moreno said.

An arbitrator ruled last week that Hamilton, who reported the relapse, had not violated baseball’s drug policy and thus could not be suspended. Angels President John Carpino said it “defies logic” that ...

MLB, union prohibit players from daily fantasy games

Who should I start this week, Joe Jackson or Pete Rose?

Major League Baseball and the players’ association have agreed to a deal that forbids players from playing in daily fantasy baseball games that involve a prize, but still allows them to endorse these companies.

Earlier this week, at the IMG World Congress in California, commissioner Rob Manfred said that although he considered daily fantasy different from gambling, playing fantasy for prizes became part of Rule 21, which prohibits ...

Q&A With “Growing Up Pedro” Author Matt Tavares

In your readings, what have you found that resonates most with kids?

Tavares: I’ve been sharing the book quite a bit a schools and store events, and kids seem pretty fascinated with Pedro’s childhood. I think the fact that Pedro was so small makes kids automatically relate to him. In the opening scene of Growing Up Pedro, Pedro is upset because he wants to play ball with the older boys, but his big brother, Ramon, tells him it’s too dangerous because they’re using a hard ball. Kids really ...

Roll Call: Nursing Lounge Coming to Nationals Park?

What Have New Pace Rules Meant for Troy Tulowitzki?

According to the rule, Tulowitzki isn’t violating anything. He kept a foot in the box, which is basically it. But that didn’t stop him from going through his full and familiar routine… So the rule really doesn’t address this sort of behavior. Maybe you’ll shave off a second or two, but frequently, players would go through their idiosyncrasies while they wandered away from the box. Now they’ll just do them in the box. The rule essentially forces catchers and umpires to watch batters ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 4-10-2015

Pittsburgh Press, April 10, 1915:

War, politics and spring fashions were relegated to the background today while some 72 athletes in four cities started a 154 days’ battle of their own. The umpires took the indicators away from the judges and summonses gave way to batting lists, the Federal league formally opening its 1915 baseball season.

I had no idea Federal League teams had 18-man rosters. That seems ridiculously small.

Angels Notes: Garrett Richards moves closer to return - The Orange County Register

Good news for Angels fans.

Manager Mike Scioscia had said last week that the plan for Richards after Thursday’s game would be a regular season minor league game on Tuesday. If he pitches for Triple-A Salt Lake City, they are at Fresno on Tuesday.

After that, Richards could be ready to rejoin the Angels rotation. If he does, he would be eight months removed from knee surgery, which had an expected rehab time of six to nine months.
