Politico: Las Vegas Sun owners host Obama

Who says St. Jeter can’t move left?

It’s not the first time Obama and [Las Vegas Sun publisher] Greenspun have hung out. Obama kicked off the fundraiser recalling a trip to Nevada last November when he and Greenspun golfed with former Yankees great Derek Jeter.

“He and Derek Jeter stole money from me at Shadow Creek,” Obama said of Greenspun, referring to the course in North Las Vegas. “It was clearly a set up, because when we got to the practice range, he was shanking balls everywhere. ...

Full Count » Hanley Ramirez: ‘I think with me at first, we’re going to have a better team’

The guy has been an infielder his whole career. I’m sure he’ll be more comfortable at first than in LF. Although I don’t expect him to be great there, I do believe he’ll be more than passable at the position, until David Ortiz retires and he moves to DH.

If you expected Hanley Ramirez to resist playing first base — surprise! He’s completely on board.

“I think with me at first, we’re going to have a better team on the field, competing every day,” Ramirez said on Tuesday in Chicago ...

We’re also going to start you at the top of our pay scale.” “Great, great! Am I staying in Florida?” “No, Joe. We want you to mine a great new area for us. YOU ARE GOING TO UGANDA!!”

CC Sabathia rules out surgery, stays open to bullpen role | New York Post

CC Sabathia was encouraged by what a doctor told him Tuesday about his sore right knee.

“It went good — no surgery,’’ said Sabathia, who hopes rest will allow him to return to the Yankees this season. “I’ll start the rehab process, and I feel like if I get enough rest I can come back and be healthy enough to pitch.’’
Sabathia was so pleased with what Dr. Answorth Allen said, he thinks there is a chance he will be able to pitch when eligible to come off the disabled list on ...

ESPN Takes Schilling Off LLWS Broadcast After Anti-Muslim Tweet

Schilling retweeted a post that said, ‘‘Only 5-10% of Muslims are extremists. In 1940, only 7% of Germans were Nazis. How’d that go?’’ The post was soon removed from his Twitter feed.

Only 5-10% of Curt Schilling’s tweets are racist. How’d that go, Curt?

Small moves that paid off big

Remember all the fun the Padres had last winter though?

4. Nathan Eovaldi, SP, Yankees: Acquired from the Marlins in December in a trade that sent David Phelps and Martin Prado to Miami, Eovaldi didn’t seem to be making much progress in a Yankees uniform. After surrendering eight runs in two-thirds of an inning against his former team on June 16, he owned a 5.12 ERA through 13 starts, with opponents hitting .329 against him.

But the hard-throwing 25-year-old has turned things around since, ...

Relationship Between Spending, Winning Remains Low

This never would have happened if baseball had a salary cap.

About a year ago, the Providence Journal ran a piece, Money Can’t Buy Success for Teams Anymore, discussing the relationship between wins and payroll. The article took a look at Opening Day payrolls over the last decade and correlated the payroll with wins. Brian MacPherson found that from 2002 to 2008 the correlation coefficient for wins and payroll exceeded .4 and was generally around .5, but that the relationship had declined ...

Don Orsillo will not return on Red Sox telecasts next season - The Boston Globe

NESN is getting rid of the very entertaining and likable Don Orsillo. Orsillo is immensely popular among all the Red Sox fans I know. Do any of the Sox fans here disagree?

According to industry sources, Orsillo was never a favorite of Joseph Maar, NESN’s vice president of programming and production/executive producer who arrived at the network in July 2012. Last year, Maar implemented the policy of having its broadcasters — Orsillo and analyst Jerry Remy, in this case — take in-season ...

Houston Astros bullpen strong without big names Ken Rosenthal | FOX Sports

Hinch said the relievers have “general” roles — when the Astros lead, he mostly goes Harris-Neshek-Gregerson in the final three innings, mixing and matching with Qualls and his lefties, Sipp and Perez. But because none of the relievers is an established late-inning monster — this, for example, is Gregerson’s first year closing — Hinch said the roles are “in pencil.” In other words, he can manage however he wants, and the relievers are comfortable with it.

Ask BA: Watching The Best Rule 5 Class In Years

Last year only three players stuck with their new teams. No more than five players have been retained by their new team in any major league Rule 5 draft over the past seven seasons.

This year? It would appear that 10 of the 14 players taken in last December’s Rule 5 draft will stay with their new team. (...)The 10 who are likely to meet the requirements this year would make it the second-most numerous Rule 5 class this century, topped only by the 11 players who managed to stick from the 2002 ...

Taylor Jungmann and Diminishing Marginal Utility | FanGraphs Baseball

Good stuff from Eno Harris.

So when Trevor Bauer dismisses the fact his curveball has the highest whiff rate among starters, saying, “That’s just because of how I use it, not because of the movement of the pitch,” then you can understand better how complicated pitching is — and how one good pitch thrown infrequently does not automatically beget one great pitch thrown more often.

Struggling Nationals Call on Trea Turner | FanGraphs

lthough he was one of the better hitters at both of his minor-league stops this season, it seems as though his bat still has some developing left to do. ZiPS and Steamer forecast him for roughly an 80 wRC+ from here on out. This is more or less what Desmond’s done this year, and falls short of even the most pessimistic rest-of-season projection for Desmond. More than likely, Turner’s not a better player than Desmond is right now. The Nationals are aware of this, which is why Turner’s only ...

Nick Cafardo | On Baseball: Move Hanley Ramirez over, or move him out? - The Boston Globe

At some point, Ortiz will be done. That point will come sooner rather than later. Tell Ramirez he’s going to play first base, left field and DH next season. Play him there.

The problem is, he doesn’t work hard on his defense, according to team sources. The one time he did work was in spring training, when he was out before and after practice and games.

But once the season began, the extra work stopped.

Ramirez has been unwilling to go out and practice, very similar to Yoenis Cespedes last ...

Mike Gallego out as A’s third base coach, Ron Washington in - San Francisco Chronicle

In the wake of recent baserunning snafus, Mike Gallego, the A’s long-serving third-base coach, was let go by the team on Monday and infield coach Ron Washington was installed back in his old spot.

“I’m going to do all I can to get guys across the plate,” Washington said before Oakland’s game at Safeco Field. “I don’t expect to be a perfect third-base coach. But I know I’m a damn good third base coach.’

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 8-25-2015

Topeka State Journal, August 25, 1915:

Otis Crandall, former Giant now with the St. Louis Feds, has invented a new delivery known as the “snake ball.” According to the reports of opposing batsmen, the sphere floats up the the plate in a series of eccentric circles that give hickory swingers the staggers trying to follow its course.

Sounds (from contemporary reports as well as more recent sources) like it was just a big, loopy curveball. Writers of this era seemed intent on discovering “new” ...

Martino: David Wright returns to a very different Mets team - NY Daily News

It’s Captain America calling!

At the beginning of a historic night for the Mets offense, David Wright announced his relevance to the pennant race with one thundering swing: top of the second inning, boom, second deck in left field.

With that, the Mets’ weirdly successful August became even weirder. Wright returns to a Twilight Zone, where everything works out for this team. It’s a reality barely recognizable from what the captain has seen for years.

“I hope that everyone here is soaking ...

JESSICA MENDOZA WILL BE THE FIRST FEMALE ANALYST ON AN ESPN MLB GAME

A bit of history is being made on ESPN’s Monday Night Baseball this evening – ESPN analyst Jessica Mendoza will be the first ever female analyst on an ESPN MLB game. This is a pretty big deal, considering the majority of ESPN’s analysts have been ex-players. Technically, Mendoza is also an ex-player – she was a two-time Olympian for ...

From field to front office, many believe chemistry still matters in baseball

Sure, numbers are fine for fantasy leagues, but if you want to truly define a player’s value, or recognize the importance significance of clubhouse culture, it’s time to wake up and embrace character, too.

“I think we’re losing part of our game because so many of these people in charge don’t have the scouting background or playing background,’’ Peavy said. “All they have is a great education and they’re really good at math. Some of these front offices crunch all of these ...

How Independent Baseball Teams Make Money. Or Don’t. - WSJ

In most cases, the teams are kept alive by owners who are either independently wealthy or have a basket of other businesses, and are prepared to swallow some losses for the thrill of owning a team. “In any league, I’d be surprised if over half the teams make money,” says Miles Wolff, commissioner of the American Association and Canadian American Association independent leagues.
