Say this much about first-year Padres general manager A.J. Preller: He’s apparently leaving no stone unturned in his pursuit of offensive help.

Mike Schmidt: Marlins’ Stanton too rich too early? | www.palmbeachpost.com

An interesting perspective on the Stanton contract.

In the 1970s and again in ‘80s, I signed that era’s version of the Giancarlo Stanton deal.

I was considered the Giancarlo Stanton of those times. I had led the league in home runs and RBIs a few times, so the Phillies decided I was worthy of becoming the highest-paid player in baseball.
...
Now he’ll get to experience batting slumps as the highest-paid player, a totally different feeling. He’ll be at home plate with the bases loaded and strike ...

Kemp drawing interest, raising chance he’s the Dodgers OF dealt - CBSSports.com

Jon Heyman assesses the Dodgers outfield situation.

While Andre Ethier and Carl Crawford were originally seen as the most likely high-profile, high-salaried Dodgers outfielders to be traded, that may not necessarily be the case at this point.

Word is there is serious interest in Matt Kemp, which will weigh heavily into the equation.

Red Sox offer for Pablo Sandoval might be in the lead - Sports - The Boston Globe

A major league source indicated the Red Sox’ five-year, $95 million offer may be in the lead over Sandoval’s offers from the San Francisco Giants and the San Diego Padres.

It’s not certain whether any of the teams have offered a sixth-year option.

Sandoval would like to make a decision soon. He visited the Red Sox Monday and Tuesday and came away with an offer.

MLB.com: White Sox Land Adam LaRoche With 2 Year/$25M Deal

The White Sox added a veteran power bat to mix with their young sluggers Friday evening, agreeing to a two-year, $25-million contract with first baseman Adam LaRoche, sources have told MLB.com.

The agreement was first reported by USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.

LaRoche, 35, is an 11-year Major League veteran who spent the past four seasons with the Nationals, hitting .259/.362/.455 with 26 home runs and 92 RBIs in 2014.

ESPN Suspends Keith Law From Twitter For Defending Evolution

Heavy-tweetin’ ESPN baseball writer Keith Law has been noticeably silent for the last couple of days. That’s no coincidence—he’s been given a Twitter timeout by ESPN, and we’re told that it’s for loudly and repeatedly defending Charles Darwin from transitional fossil Curt Schilling, his Bristol colleague.

Josh Lueke and the Ways of Anger

It had escalated so quickly between him and Buckminster, I said; why did he think that was? He replied that he had seen the ump not call close pitches strikes earlier in the game, so he was determined to throw strikes.

I didn’t really understand this. Sometimes, players’ apparently rational explanations for what they’ve done seem to contradict the actions themselves. It’s for this reason that players will sometimes express disdain toward the opinions of people, like writers, who ...

Raising $ for homeless youth, searching for a SS ... at the same time!

For the fifth consecutive year, the New York Yankees general manager planned to sleep outside in the blustery West 41st Street courtyard of Covenant House as part of an annual nationwide event to raise money to benefit homeless children and adolescents.

“I don’t know how any human beings can deal with this on a daily, weekly, monthly basis,” Cashman said. “There’s no comfort on that ground. Even one night is ...

This latest present from his chief was a distinct surprise to Maranville and means that his entire honeymoon expenses will be taken ...

MLB to tweak replay system, but managers’ challenges will stay | New York Post

How will this be done? Will there be a time limit?

Joe Torre, baseball’s executive vice president of baseball operations, said last week at the general managers’ meetings that managers would no longer slowly stroll from the dugout to the umpire in order to give his team time to determine whether to challenge the on-field ruling. Managers instead could signal from the dugout.

Running list of 2014 40-man roster additions | MiLB.com News | The Official Site of Minor League Baseball

On the surface, getting added to a 40-man roster may feel like a small move. It doesn’t guarantee a Major League spot. In fact by rule (and math), 15 of the players on said roster aren’t with the big club at any given time until September when rosters are allowed to expand.

But it does provide two things for the players involved. The first is protection. To be more specific, that’s protection from the Rule 5 Draft, coming up Dec. 11. Players who were 18 or younger when they signed their first ...

Female Sportswriter Asks: ‘Why Are All My Twitter Followers Men?’ | ThinkProgress

It makes good business sense for teams to engage with fans where the fans can be found, physically and virtually. But while food, drink, and shopping posts on Pinterest will bring women to a game or a team store, they won’t bring women into the sports discussion.
And in the long run, that’s not good for women sports fans, women sports reporters, or for sports and our broader, more informed conversations about them.

The article is an interesting read but…does it really matter? I come from ...

The Phillies shouldn’t settle for a rational Cole Hamels trade - SBNation.com

The Phillies need to be looking for fair value, not an overwhelming win. Of course, determining fair value can be difficult. Ultimately it depends on the quality of a team’s talent evaluation skills, the player development people, and luck. If your scouts and metrics evaluate prospects well and your coaches help the players play to their potentials, a team can make fair deals. If the players don’t end up getting hurt once they get on your team (the luck part), everybody will talk about what a ...

Examining our assumptions about Pablo Sandoval

It’s dangerous using run-based park factors in projecting a batter’s performance in a new park. Some hitters are particularly suited for specific parks. From what I’ve seen I’d expect him to get a pretty nice boast coming to Fenway.

(Sandoval should expect a boost in his numbers if he moves from AT&T Park in San Francisco to Fenway Park — but not as much as you might think. Sandoval’s adjusted OPS+ last season was 111, the same as that of Brett Gardner, who posted a .749 OPS in ...
