Keith Law: Time to end the Diamondbacks’ reign of error (INSIDER)

No mistake has loomed larger than the constant stream of errors around Cuban right-handed pitcher Yoan Lopez. The brand-new front office reached to sign him for $8 million after the 2013 season, even though it appeared that he was priced by other teams at about one-tenth that number. The Diamondbacks didn’t understand the international bonus pool rules, and thus were unaware they would have to pay an $8 million penalty on top of Lopez’s bonus AND would be prohibited from signing any July 2 free ...

Billy Bob of the Baseball Movies

But Thornton was more than a fan. At Malvern (about 20 miles from Hot Springs) High School, he had some success as a pitcher. He was good enough to get invited to a Kansas City Royals tryout camp in 1973. And it was there that fate intervened.

On his first day at camp, he was hit by an errant throw during an infield drill. An anonymous but strong-armed third baseman broke his collarbone. Thornton was not participating in the drill but was just a bystander. And so his professional career ended ...

Spin (rate) zone: Mike Montgomery is a real numbers guy

“We were in the bullpen together and he’s really into it,” Montgomery told me of Zych. “We just talked a lot about it and I went to a website called Brooks Baseball. I guess it’s pretty accurate. We would just look at it and I’d check it out after every time I pitched. And we talked about what the numbers would teach us about our own stuff. I can throw these pitches in these locations because it’s really hard to hit. And learning about movement on the pitches and stuff like ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 8-18-2016

Pittsburgh Press, August 18, 1916:

Manager Joe Tinker yesterday indicated very plainly his sentiments toward Heine Zimmerman. In spite of the fact that he did not have enough outfielders to go around, he sent Zimmerman to the bench, Zeider to third and employed Gene Packard, a pitcher, in left field for the game against the Giants. This is taken to mean that Tinker is about through with Zimmerman.

Good guess. The Cubs suspended Zimmerman a few days later for “laying down on the job”, and ...

Josh Donaldson and John Gibbons were separated after a heated argument in the dugout

Josh Donaldson was not pleased after striking out in the third inning against the Yankees. His tempers boiled over into the dugout, and manager John Gibbons confronted the Blue Jays star.

The incident started when Donaldson threw his bat upon entering the dugout. Gibbons argued with Donaldson about that behavior, but Donaldson wouldn’t back down.

It got to the point that teammates had to step in and pull Donaldson away from his manager. Donaldson also gave catcher Josh Thole a shove while ...

Inside a Whataburger Field stairwell, a Hooks player backhanded his girlfriend three times, according to an arrest affidavit.

Footage of the attack, captured on video surveillance, prompted Hooks officials to contact police the next day.

The affidavit into what led to the arrest of outfielder Danry Vasquez was released to the Caller-Times on Tuesday.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 8-17-2016

Pittsburgh Press, August 17, 1916:

According to Eddie Ainsmith, the Washington catcher, Walter Johnson is developing a spitball delivery. What does this mean. There have been rumors of late that the Capitol City Speed King is losing his wonderful speed. Batters who have been facing him for several years say Walter doesn’t have the oldtime zip to his flings this year. And if it is a fact that he is trying the spitball there must be something to the rumors. The moist fling is regarded only as the ...

Barring a significant slide over the last quarter of the schedule, Trout is going to join an exclusive club with this metronomic stat line. Since the dawn of the 20th century, only nine others have strung together at least five consecutive qualifying seasons with an OPS+ of 160 or better. Here is the impressive list in reverse chronological order.

Frank Thomas 1991-97
Stan Musial 1948-54
Johnny Mize 1936-40

“He has not changed his approach in the four-hole,” said Farrell. “He doesn’t take on any added significance to the role or the spot in the lineup. He’s in some kind of spot right now the way he’s seeing the baseball, the way he’s making such hard contact.”

Bud Selig might soon be in the Baseball Hall of Fame (try to contain your excitement)

This never would have happened if baseball had a salary cap.

It’s generally more a matter of when than if commissioners get in the Hall of Fame. Selig’s call looks to be coming since the Hall of Fame announced revisions in July to the structure for its Era Committees, which consider players retired more than 15 years as well as managers, umpires and executives.

Selig falls under the newly created Today’s Game Committee, which will meet in December. Because of the rules of the committee ...

States Adopting New Pitch Limits For High School Pitchers - BaseballAmerica.com

Georgia’s new rules will limit any varsity pitcher to no more than 110 pitches in any outing. Pitchers will be able to finish facing their final batter even if that means they go beyond 110 pitches. The new rules for Georgia will also mandate three days of rest after any outing of 86 or more pitches, two days of rest after 61-85 pitches, one day of rest for 35-60 pitches. Pitchers who throw less than 35 pitches can pitch again the next day. According to the Macon (Ga.) Telegraph, pitchers ...

The 32-year old Cuban wouldn’t have to do much to outperform Astros’ third basemen offensively this season, who have combined to hit ...

No, the Tigers-Red Sox day game on Thursday is not part of a conspiracy theory

The baseball schedule can be tough, especially come August, but some in Boston believe this is more than just some bad scheduling luck. At least one columnist, Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald, suggests that the day game in Detroit on Thursday may have something to do with the Tigers former relationship with Sox’ president Dave Dombrowski:

The Red Sox tried to get the Tigers to push the start time back to late afternoon or evening when the times were set in the offseason. Major League ...

Coco Crisp ‘hurt,’ believes A’s trying to prevent option

Puma: Original Met Clarence ‘Choo Choo’ Coleman dead at 80

#RIPChooChoo

Coleman said he received the nickname “Choo Choo” in his youth because of his speed. Mets manager Casey Stengel would quip he had never seen a catcher so fast at retrieving passed balls.

Following his baseball career, Coleman helped run a Chinese restaurant in Newport News, Va. He was among the attendees at the Mets’ 50th anniversary celebration in 2012.

Jonathan Papelbon Subjected His Teammates To Terrible Pro-Trump Music

Whether you’re voting for Trump or not, we can all agree that Rodney Carrington songs are terrible.

The Nationals released Papelbon over the weekend, and that meant it was time for writers and reporters to dish some gossip. The Washington Post’s Dan Steinberg provided us with this gem:

Now maybe players don’t, or shouldn’t, care whether the home fans like them. If a Nationals player did care, though, he probably wouldn’t have wanted to wear a T-shirt reading “Obama can’t ban these ...
