Townsend (BLS): No one is buying Derek Jeter’s hole-in-one video

DER-EK CHEAT-ER (clap, clap, clap, clap, clap)...

The video in question was posted by Jeter’s sister, Sharlee, who is also the president of his Turn 2 Foundation. It’s a charity event, so everything they’re doing is ultimately for a good cause, but it’s difficult to get past what appears to be a staged event. ...

Based on the smirk on Jeter’s face before he even tees off, he was either very confident or he knew they were pranking the masses. We’ll go with that latter, especially since there’s ...

New vision training has Joe Mauer back on track

For that resurgence, at least some of the credit must go to the discontinued, goggle-like glasses Nike sent him this offseason. Mauer brought them to spring training and showed them to hitting coach Tom Brunansky, who became an instant believer.

Young Twins hitters such as Byron Buxton and Eddie Rosario have been using the dark, wraparound glasses that include a small control switch on the frame to alter the speed at which the internal strobe light flashes. Korean slugger Byung Ho Park has ...

Mets’ Matt Harvey on start vs. Braves: ‘It’s still a work in progress’ - Mets Blog- ESPN

“Obviously throwing that many pitches in five innings is not ideal,” Harvey said. “My goal today was going out there and really trying to work on what we had worked on this past week. At times I was able to do that, and at times I fell out of that. I have to re-find that.

“When you get into a bad habit, it’s not going to be an immediate fix,” the 27-year-old continued. “The majority of the time out of the stretch I did feel better. Like I said, there’s still work to be done.”

Rays calling up top prospect LHP Blake Snell to start Saturday | Tampa Bay Times

The Rays are calling up top prospect LHP Blake Snell to make his major-league debut at Yankee Stadium on Saturday, the Tampa Bay Times has learned.

Snell is 1-1, 2,51 in three starts for Triple-A Durham, striking out 21 in 14 1/2 innings while allowing 15 hits and seven walks.

In the midst of playing nine straight, the Rays needed a fifth starter for Saturday. They had been planning on using RHP Erasmo Ramirez, but he was needed in relief on Thursday in Boston.

Jays’ Colabello Suspended 80 Games for PEDs

Colabello’s positive test for dehydrochlormethyltestosterone, an anabolic steroid that is sold under the name Turinabol, was a violation of MLB’s joint drug prevention and treatment program. His suspension is effective immediately.

“On March 13, I got one of the scariest and most definitely the least-expected phone calls of my entire life. I was informed by the players’ association that a banned substance was found in my urine,” Colabello said in a statement released by the union. “I have ...

Braves may complain to union about condition of Turner Field infield

This would never happen with a new stadium!

Unhappy over the conditions of the Turner Field infield, Atlanta Braves players are considering contacting the players’ union to see if they can pressure their own club to make improvements, a source within the organization told ESPN on Thursday.

The source speculated that with the Braves leaving Turner Field for a new stadium after this season, the playing surface is not being treated with the same meticulous care as in the past and that the ...

MLB’s replay rule can be challenging: When to challenge? | www.ajc.com

Yes, what we need is more replay. How about we cut the game time down to one hour so we can have two hours of replay and still get the game in under three hours?

Francoeur said he’d like to see managers get two challenges per game. “That’s why I get frustrated — it doesn’t make sense that there’s only one challenge,” he said. “That’s such a huge call in the game.”

Schilling says he wouldn’t have spoken out about politics if he needed job to support family

Listen I’m lucky I’ve been so blessed in my life to be able to experience and do the things I’ve done and if that job meant I had to continue doing it to put a roof over the head of my family and food on my table, I’m probably acting a little differently than I did.

Weren’t we supposed to feel sorry for him because he lost all of his money on his gaming business?

Posnanski: The Hobgoblin of an Unoccupied Mind

That might be harsh — I’m sure Schilling has friends in and around the game — but it has never been hard to find people annoyed or infuriated by Schilling. Well, he’s a loudmouth. That’s something he readily admits. He says insensitive, uninformed stuff all the time, and it splits people — many are offended, others race to his defense. Sometimes he apologizes. Sometimes he doesn’t. This time — after posting clueless and nasty anti-transgender stuff on his Facebook page — ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 4-22-2016

The Washington Post reprinted in the Pittsburgh Press, April 22, 1916:

When all other remedies fail try baseball. It is the saving grace of the nation. When the perspective of the public is a little awry the baseball season invariably acts as a restorer.

Just now, when the whole world is in an upheaval, when the voices of many men clamor for different courses of conduct on the part of the United States, and when the nation is on edge, it is fortunate that the season of the national sport is at ...

Texas Rangers: Grant: How will Jurickson Profar situation play out? I see two scenarios | SportsDay

How much trade value does Profar have at this point?

Question: How has Profar been playing in the minors? With the way Elvis and Odor are playing, do you you think we’ll see Profar before September?
Evan Grant: He enters Thursday hitting .293 with a .412 OBP. I’ve heard from some evaluators that there is still some concern about his arm strength, but ain’t nothing wrong with the bat. My gut tells me this: Either Profar will be part of a big trade for a starting pitcher this summer or, over the ...

Pirates notebook: Hurdle uses unique method to measure offensive production | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

What, no points for getting their uniforms dirty?

The Pirates keep track of productive team plate appearances, a set of criteria that result in a positive outcome.

Players can earn one in eight different ways: a hit, a walk, an eight-pitch plate appearance, a hit-by-pitch, a sacrifice bunt, moving a runner from second to third, driving in a runner from third and the rare catcher’s interference.

Bryce Harper rising to No. 1? Execs still prefer Mike Trout | New York Post

So I asked 13 executives and scouts: If money were no object and you could start a franchise with either Trout or Harper, who do you got?

Three said they actually would take Houston shortstop Carlos Correa, and one also mentioned Baltimore third baseman Manny Machado. But the request was Trout vs. Harper, and eight took Trout and five went with Harper — with two of the Harper voters admitting they only had changed recently. One Trout voter actually wavered toward Harper in the midst of an ...

“Jumpin’ Joe Dugan” — 1927: The Diary of Myles Thomas

Editors’ Note: “1927: The Diary of Myles Thomas” is an experiment in storytelling, the core of which is a diary of a pitcher on the 1927 Yankees. Though no “real” diary exists, our historical fiction is based on factual research and chronicles baseball immortals, jazz pioneers, Prohibition, bootleggers and gamblers, as well as race, sex, morality and the meaning of heroes. True to the era, the diary will occasionally include mature language and subject matter.

Josh Donaldson not resting on his MVP laurels

Blue Jays fans and fantasy aficionados can take comfort in the knowledge that Donaldson has no plans to jog out a groundball or mail in an at-bat any time soon. With the exception of punching slabs of meat, he has done everything in his power to prepare himself for the seasonal grind.

“They call this sport Groundhog Day every day, but it’s only gonna be Groundhog Day if you have that perception,” Donaldson says. “I feel very fortunate to be in the position I’m in. I don’t want somebody to ever ...

New Bret Boone book: alcohol problem derailed stint with Twins - StarTribune.com

The Boones are baseball’s first family?

But in a new book titled, “Home Game: Big League Stories from My Life in Baseball’s First Family,” set to go on sale May 10, Boone reveals that it was more than a simple matter of aging that caused him to fall so fast. Instead, he writes, he was a “substance abuser” whose alcohol problem grew worse during that period.

Yankees’ grand plan doesn’t factor in losses like this | New York Post

The Yankees still have a stellar bullpen. To expect them to have a perfect bullpen expects too much.

“We’re going to get better, and it should start [Friday]” said Alex Rodriguez, who looked better at the plate, and Brett Gardner said, “I’d rather lose 9-of-14 in April than September.”

Both veterans probably are right. Without a stellar bullpen, though? This plan has no chance.

Marlins, Pirates players are worried about the Zika virus for upcoming Puerto Rico games

The virus, which can be transmitted via mosquitos, has not been transmitted in that fashion in the continental U.S., but there have been nearly 450 confirmed Zika cases contracted in Puerto Rico. The continental U.S. cases — over 350 of them — have all been tied to people traveling to places where there are outbreaks, such as Puerto Rico.

MLB and the union are talking with the players and are looking at Centers for Disease Control guidelines about how to ensure player safety and the ...
