Putting value of Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Yasmani Grandal in the proper frame

Sam Miller appreciates Yasmani Grandal work behind the plate. Maybe a little too much.

Blue Jays face uncertain future after falling short again

Now two of the biggest cogs in the lineup, right fielder Jose Bautista and first baseman Edwin Encarnacion, seem likely to leave as free agents in the offseason. Bautista has hit 265 home runs in his nine seasons with the Blue Jays while Encarnacion has 239 homers in eight years.

The duo helped the Blue Jays end a 22-year playoff drought last year.

“Eddie and Jose really helped put this team back on the map again with what they’ve accomplished,” said Gibbons, who completed the fourth ...

New York World, October 20, 1916:

Yankee Owners Planning To Start Work on Their New Park by Next Spring

Nobody is more anxious to begin the erection of a new ball park than are [Yankees owners] Capt. Huston and Col. Ruppert, but the problem that is besetting them is location. They have had under consideration an excellent place in Long Island City, on the other end of the Queensboro Bridge, but there is a doubt as to whether it would be advisable to get off Manhattan Island.
The decision on ...

Citgo sign could be landmark on the move | Boston Herald

I don’t get the attachment. It’s an advertisement, not a landmark.

“What if changing the location improves visibility? How do we allow for the serendipity of that approach?” said Rosanne Foley, executive director of the Boston Landmarks Commission.

Catching position has quantity, questionable quality

Leon had a great season. I’m still having trouble buying into having him as the Red Sox starter. I still think a Swihart/Vazquez combo (with Swihart also getting some games in the outfield) is there long-term answer behind the plate.

Texas Rangers: Offseason issues: Why Rangers face tough decision in what to do with Joey Gallo | SportsDay

This is a tough choice on Gallo. He did appear to slide this season. It’s first base, though. Can’t the Rangers pull a Red Sox move from 2003? Acquire a couple of 1B AAA talents to compete with Gallo for the job?

This may be the most difficult decision because I’m not sure Gallo can demonstrate enough progress, regardless of his results in Venezuela, to earn the job. I’m also not sure if his value is high enough to allow him to front a deal for a middle-of-the-rotation (or better) pitcher, which ...

Zach Britton talks relief roles, Orioles’ future, Wallace, Chiti and Cy Young Award -

It’s not unreasonable for managers to expect to get 90-100 innings from a reliever. He might have to work in an extra off day once in a while but it’s doable. Limiting your most effective pitcher to 60 innings isn’t maximizing his value.

“If you watch the way (Indians manager Terry) Francona is using Miller, that’s exactly what he is doing. He’s using those off days to his advantage,” Britton said. “But, through the course of a regular season, we just don’t get those off days. It’s ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 10-19-2016

19th century infielder Arthur Irwin tells the funniest baseball story he knows, Topeka State Journal, October 19, 1916:

Frank Bonner, once a big league star, was at bat, with a fellow named Thomas pitching. Thomas was bald headed but not proud about it, so he wore a wig. Bonner knew nothing about the dome disguise.

“Frank picked out one of Thomas’s twisters and drove it right back at him. The ball smashed Thomas on the upper division of his forehead and promptly knocked off Thomas’s cap and ...

The Economist: Progressive managers are finding sweet relief by unshackling their closers

This sclerotic management technique was the unwitting handiwork of Jerome Holtzman, a sportswriter who devised a statistic in 1960 that he called a “save” in order to measure the impact of shut-down relievers. Roughly speaking, it meant entering with a lead of three or fewer runs and finishing the game without relinquishing it, though there were a few additional wrinkles. The number took decades to catch on, and for most of the 1970s and 1980s, teams wisely deployed “fireman” relievers ...

Major League Baseball is pushing for an International Draft. It will be a disaster. - MLB Daily Dish

When Major League Baseball expanded its amateur draft to Puerto Rico in 1990, it had a catastrophic effects on the island’s baseball community. In 2007, the island’s Secretary of Sport, David Bernier, told Jesse Sanchez, “The investment in Puerto Rico is not a cost-effective one for Major League teams and has lost charm for the recruiter. This reality is substantiated by the decrease in numbers of players selected through the Draft and active in the Major Leagues…. This creates a domino ...

Red Sox staffers open up at Saberseminar

Tippett said the Red Sox are about a half-game behind their own 2016 projection, which he shared as a graph in a slideshow. The team appears headed for right around 90 wins, based on the graph.

Tippett sees a connection to the 2011 club that fell apart in the final month.

Pop culture has always treated a Cubs championship like a far-out fantasy

The thought of the Cubs getting to—let alone winning—the World Series, had entered the realm of outlandish fantasy. After all, the team’s current 107-year championship drought is the longest in not only professional baseball but also football, hockey, and basketball. The Cubs taking the pennant seemed like a sure sign of the apocalypse, as when W.P. Kinsella, in his short story collection The Thrill Of The Grass, has the Cubs finally triumphing… right before Armageddon. The team ...

Chicago also boasted the NL’s DRS leader at four individual positions—first base (Anthony Rizzo, 11), second base (Javier Baez, 11), shortstop (Addison Russell, 19) and right field (Jason Heyward, 14). That defensive core should be together for some time, too, as all are 27 years old or younger.

WFAA finds millions in additional giveaways for proposed Arlington stadium |

Misleading numbers? Not shocking. MLB is constantly looking to screw over taxpayers.

A WFAA-TV analysis has determined the actual costs and possible giveaways for the proposed $1 billion, retractable-roof stadium for the Texas Rangers may be much higher than the “50-50” private-public partnership touted by City of Arlington officials.

Bridgeport Evening Farmer, October 18, 1916:

It is [Yankees manager Bill Donovan’s] opinion that if pitchers continue to invent schemes which require something other than a natural delivery of the ball it is going to result soon in legislation which will force the pitcher to work without a glove, thus depriving him of his best means for practicing deception.

“That is the only way they will ever successfully curb the illegal and freak deliveries that are complained about,” says Bill, “for, to a ...
