Peter Gammons: Manager-GM Collaboration; Trade Deadline Ambiguity - GammonsDaily.com

The older age is improved and empowered by the new age, the new age buoyed by the eyes, ears, experience and human understanding of the traditionalists. Scioscia and DiPoto should have worked. Did each make mistakes? Probably. But while Moreno is running his own businesses, he needed to define the Angels organization and, instead, sometimes making capricious decisions (like Josh Hamilton) and not having a clear, defined structure, created confusion.

This is not about stat freaks and baseball ...

GIFs, Twitter suspensions, and social media: an open letter to MLB Advanced Media

See, when someone, say, fellow SB Nation “blogger” Grant Brisbee, posts something as innocuous as a Vine of a silly happening during a baseball game—I have no idea what it was as you can see below—the post is targeted for removal because By Jove! One of these Internet Types is stealing our banwebs! Delete the pictures and return the stolen files, although it was probably something that never would have made it onto any of MLB’s social media accounts which are notoriously ill-equipped for ...

Fewer walks and bunts, more shifts among midseason trends - MLB

Walks are down and shifts are up!

New commissioner Rob Manfred took plenty of heat when, in a January interview with ESPN’s Karl Ravech, he claimed he was open to the idea of restricting defensive shifts.
Number of shifts, MLBYear No. of shifts
2010 2,464
2011 2,357
2012 4,577
2013 8,180
2014 13,298
2015 18,698 (prorated)

Manfred essentially walked those comments back, and with good reason, considering the use of shifts shows no sign of letting up. According to Baseball Info Solutions, teams ...

Recreating Memorable Trading Cards

They’re hardly a Hall of Fame crew; they rarely even get recognized at Starbucks. But slap a sombrero on one of them, hand him a saxophone or a novelty-sized glove, and —Hey! I know that guy. They’re the players—mostly journeymen (39 combined stops) and utilitymen (35 positions)—whose faces you remember from collectible cards, their backs stained with bubble-gum sugar. And they want you to know that they appreciate your love.

Nationals, Astros WPB Spring Training Site Approved

Monday morning, Scott made the change officially official with a bill-signing ceremony held with Nationals and Astros representatives on hand, an acknowledgement of the return of Spring Training baseball to West Palm Beach for the first time since the Braves and Expos left decades ago. That the Astros and Nationals will move to Palm Beach County — if all stays on schedule — means there will be five teams within a 30-minute drive of one another on the east coast of Florida, a good sign for ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-6-2015

Pittsburgh Press, July 6, 1915:

An invitation to join the Brookfeds is contained in a letter received by Angelo Aragon, former Yankee, who has been doing spectacular work at shortstop for the Richmond Internationals. Aragon, a Cuban, can’t read English, so had Manager Dunn read the letter to him. Magee’s letter described his Brookfeds as a club in flourishing condition. Aragon laughed aloud.

He was right to laugh, but it’s not like Aragon went on to fame and fortune in the big leagues. He had ...

New York Mets, David Wright don’t have surgery as a top option | Newsday

Want to know about David’s condition? Read the article.

What are Wright’s thoughts on potential surgery?

“I have very little knowledge of it,’’ he said. “I sat down for the consultation with the doctors, the first couple of meetings. I was made aware that there is a surgery for it. I was also made aware that Dr. Watkins was going to do everything in his power to make sure that I do not need that surgery, and that’s really the only time we’ve talked about it. He made me aware there is a ...

U of T engineering students build first knuckleball pitching machine | Toronto Star

Engineers, by nature, are less inclined to leave such mysteries unsolved. Armed with their pesky math and science, they want answers.

As such, four mechanical engineering students at the University of Toronto set out to “demystify” the knuckleball by attempting to build the world’s first pitching machine that would replicate the notoriously capricious pitch on a consistent basis.

“The idea was if we could control everything maybe we could get a knuckleball to be the exact same every ...

Collins says Mets pitchers ‘need to get over’ frustration with 6-man rotation | FOX Sports

Of course, by September they may already be out of the race.

“I guess the best way to say it is, ‘Matt, we’ll go back to a five-man, but I hope you enjoy watching the rest of the season sitting on the bench in September when we need you.’ We’ve got to make the adjustment, and Matt knows that.”

Neyer: Where There’s Smoak, There’s Fire

This contest determined by popular vote has totally devolved into a popularity contest!

Flat-out question: If you’re building two teams for the rest of the season and you get two of everything including six outfielders, how many Royals’re you choosing?

You know what? I think Gordon and Cain actually make my team, perhaps even as starters! With Perez backing up Russell Martin. So, yes—with the exception of Escobar, the Royals’ starters are pretty well-deserving. By this standard that ...

538: Baseball’s Kids Are All Right

The kids are damn good, and they’re part of one of the most significant youth movements in baseball in the past 25 years.

Baseball’s excellence is supremely concentrated in its young players at the moment. To get a sense for the balance of power in MLB, I calculated the average age of all position players in the league while weighting each player’s age by how good they were in a given year (using wins above replacement).

[...]

Since the early 2000s, the MLB’s weighted age has ...

Cubs, Theo Epstein won’t necessarily be buyers at trade deadline - Chicago Tribune

There’s no doubt the Cubs need help, and not just the return of Jorge Soler or the arrival of reliever Rafael Soriano, who’s been hung up in the Dominican Republic with visa problems.

Epstein said Friday that “demand far outweighs supply” in the current market and everyone has to “recognize the trade deadline is not a panacea” for solving a team’s problems.

“If you look at the history of teams that go on and play in the World Series, very rarely is it (because of a) deadline deal,” he said, ...

Rangers notes: Hamilton may go back on disabled list | The Star Telegram

This might mean a return of Joey Gallo.

Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton could be headed to the disabled list again, this time with a groin strain.

Hamilton had an MRI on Saturday but the results had not been revealed as of 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

Hamilton wasn’t in the Rangers lineup for Saturday’s game with the Angels. He came out of Friday’s game after the seventh inning.

Rangers manager Jeff Banister said Hamilton came out of Friday’s game a little sore but said Saturday was a ...

Corbin completes ‘long road’ back to Majors | dbacks.com

It had been 645 days since the left-hander had last pitched in a regular-season game and in between he had Tommy John surgery and went through a lengthy rehab. His reward for all that work came Saturday night when he picked up the win as the D-backs beat the Rockies, 7-3.

“When they announced my name before pregame and the fans gave a pretty nice applause there, that gave me some chills and some butterflies,” Corbin said. “And after that seemed to calm me down. I just wanted to go out there ...

Tigers place Miggy on DL with calf strain | MLB.com

Detroit placed the slugging first-baseman on the 15-day disabled list Saturday due to the left calf strain he suffered trying to get a running start off first base.

The injury occurred when Cabrera took off from first base on a hit-and-run play with Victor Martinez at the plate. Cabrera, who had taken off several times during what ended up being an 11-pitch at-bat, pulled up immediately as Martinez fouled off another pitch.

Brian McCann’s Three-Run Homer in 12th Helps Yankees Walk Off With a Victory - The New York Times

Trailing the Tampa Bay Rays by 5-3 in the 12th inning on Friday night, Teixeira had an opportunity to ignite a rally with runners on first and third and one out. Suddenly, fireworks began going off outside the Stadium, minutes before the Fourth of July officially began, and Teixeira responded with a run-scoring single.

Moments later, McCann capped the show with a three-run homer to right field, propelling the Yankees to a 7-5 win, their first walk-off victory of the season.

“It’s one of ...

Klapisch: Mets’ 16-13 win over Braves in 1985 an instant classic

Thirty years ago today (and tomorrow morning), announcer John Sterling was well on his way to being beyond insufferable…

The voice on the other end of the phone was tense. The message was a newspaper editor’s equivalent of a naked threat.

“Need that story.”

It was 30 years ago today. More importantly, it was past 4 a.m. and I was on deadline in the press box at Atlanta’s Fulton County Stadium, trying to find language that would capture the history I’d just witnessed.

The Mets and ...
