Marlins express interest in Bowa as Phils make coaching changes

Break out the Bushmills!

Bench coach Larry Bowa, hitting coach Steve Henderson, first base coach Juan Samuel and pitching coach Bob McClure were all offered contracts for 2016. Henderson and McClure are expected to accept the offers, but Bowa and Samuel could move on for other opportunities.

According to sources, the Phillies have granted the Miami Marlins permission to speak with Bowa about their manager’s job. The Marlins have already interviewed Bo Porter and Manny Acta for that job.

Bowa ...

Mark Buehrle to throw two innings on Sunday, then retire

Bruce Levine of 670 The Score reports that Blue Jays starter Mark Buehrle will pitch two innings on Sunday, then retire. He is not expected to be included on the Blue Jays’ post-season roster.

Two more innings would bring Buehrle to 200 innings for a 15th consecutive season. The 36-year-old has vastly outpaced the competition in this category, as his closest competitor since 2001 is James Shields, with nine 200-inning seasons.

Nick Cafardo | Sunday Baseball Notes: For baseball’s wild-card format, changes could be on the horizon - The Boston Globe

Dumbest idea ever.

Here’s an idea from a longtime baseball executive: invert the current format. In other words, have the wild card teams battle it out over five or seven games.

This would reward teams for fighting so hard for the wild-card spots. The feeling is that by the trade deadline wild-card teams have given up, in many cases, top young talent to compete for one game.

The Division Series and Championship Series would be seven games, according to this plan, and the World Series? It ...

Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos wants to remain with Toronto next year but he’d prefer his contract not be ‘a story’ | National Post

Smart guy.

Only one detail has ever been leaked about his contract: that it covered five years and that it expires on Oct. 31. Even that much information is too much for his taste. He understands why players’ salaries are public, but he sees no reason why contract details of other club employees should be revealed.

Yelich, Gordon Have Special Days as Marlins Sweep Phillies - The New York Times

Dee Gordon got his 200th hit of the season in the opener, and Christian Yelich tied a club record with hits in eight straight at-bats as the Miami Marlins won the nightcap 5-2 to complete a doubleheader sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies Saturday.

Yelich was 5 for 5 in the first game, a 7-6 victory, then hit safely in his first three at-bats in the second. In the first game, Gordon became the first Marlins player since Hanley Ramirez in 2007 to record 200 hits with a sixth-inning single.

Ichiro Suzuki Aiming at Age 50

Considering that this season he’ll end up with negative WAR for the first time in his career, 50 seems pretty unlikely, but someone will probably offer him a job as a fourth outfielder next year.

Ode to Affeldt

Everything about that game felt flat, lifeless, colorless, like the whole scene had degenerated into black and white. I was sitting in the scout section with the Royals’ general manager at the time, Allard Baird, and we were talking about family and life and anything that came to mind to distract us from the dullness of the game itself.

And then Jeremy Affeldt entered.

If Astros and Angels win, then there is an AL West tie between the Rangers and Astros and they will play (at Arlington) to determine who goes to ALDS and who faces Yankees (who will host WC game if they win against Orioles) in WC game.

If Astros lose and Angels win, then Angels and Astros face off (in HOU) for Wild Card spot at Yankees.

If Astros win and Angels lose, then Rangers are AL West champs and Astros are in WC game

Why we picked the Cubs to win the 2015 World Series

Sporting News is picking them to win it all in 2015
The real reason to be excited, though, is the Cubs’ bountiful farm system, coupled with savvy trades, is starting to bear fruit for the lineup. First baseman Anthony Rizzo (acquired from the Padres when he was 22) and home-grown shortstop Starlin Castro are the cornerstones of the lineup, both legitimate stars entering their age-25 seasons. The fact that the Cubs were able to get significant action in the major leagues last year for ...

Chris Sale sets franchise strikeout record in White Sox win over Tigers | Chicago Sun-Times

Ed Walsh’s record for strikeouts stood for 107 years. It finally came down Friday night.

White Sox strikeout whiz Chris Sale did the honor by striking out Detroit Tigers catcher James McCann in the second inning of a 2-1 victory. Sale’s third of the night and the one that passed Walsh’s mark of 269 set in 1908.

McCann took a called strike on back-door slider on the outside corner from Sale, who received a standing ovation from a paid crowd of 18,030 before finishing with seven ...

We’ve known the likely outcome for weeks ... the Pirates have to play a one-game wild-card playoff against the Cubs, which means facing Jake Arrieta, which means certain and sudden death. Jose Fernandez Playfully Teases Evan Longoria After Giving Up A Home Run

Consider this friendly exchange between Jose Fernandez and Evan Longoria a change of pace from Jonathan Papelbon’s Fightin’ Around The League tour. The Rays third baseman absolutely socked an offering from the Marlins pitcher in the first inning of Thursday’s game, and in the next inning, Fernandez joked about it.

From the dugout, Fernandez called out to Longoria and told him that he doesn’t have to hit home runs that far.

Inside Baseball: Nationals to let Williams go, and more MLB moves -

Heyman’s latest. SCOOP ALERT:Put your drink down! Matt Williams won’t be back.

For all the criticism Jon Singleton took for signing a $10-million, five-year deal early, it appears he made the right call, as Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle recently pointed out while citing a regretful Astros executive. Houston is actually lucky third baseman Matt Dominguez and Robbie Grossman also didn’t sign early deals when offered. The Astros have some great ideas, but trying to lock up non-stars ...

Dodgers-Giants game interrupted by Full House sequel taping

The Dodgers were playing their final road game of the regular season on Thursday against the Giants when both teams got to be a part of one of San Francisco’s greatest cultural cpntributions, Full House.

The game featured a slightly extended seventh inning stretch which had actress Jodie Sweetin, known to viewers as Stephanie Tanner, singing “Take Me Out To The Ballgame” for the upcoming reboot of the show, titled Fuller House, leaving Los Angeles starter Brett Anderson very confused, ...

Cardinals, already with 100 wins, can finish as stingiest team since 1969

Being smart and having good players goes a long way.

This year’s St. Louis pitching staff and defense have been stingier than any club in 46 years. They’ve allowed 513 runs in 159 games, which projects to 523 runs at season’s end.

It’s a startling statistical accompaniment to the major leagues’ only 100-win season.

Diamondbacks announcers’ selfie shaming needlessly alienates younger fans

Having a group of women taken to task by the broadcast booth during a meaningless game in late September for enjoying themselves is pretty silly. Presumably these women paid for a ticket, just like anyone else in attendance, and didn’t seem to be bothering anyone by snapping photos with their phones of their silly faces and giant churros, yet the television booth decided they were worthy of ridicule because they happened to be on their phones instead of using that time to watch every single ...

How Ned Yost Made the Kansas City Royals Unstoppable - The New York Times

I’d like the writer to name one team which doesn’t blend analytics and scouting. One.

Yost might not be the best tactician but he’s done an extremely good job with the clubhouse.

To many, Yost is a holdover from baseball’s Dark Ages, when managers followed their guts on tactical decisions, the way they might play a late-night game of Monopoly. Suspicion of anything even marginally unconventional or innovative, let alone intellectual, was woven into the fabric of the sport. Players were ...
