The story Franco tells is that he’d like to spend the next 10 years managing in Japan, then 10 years managing in America, then three more years in a front office somewhere. At 80, he says, he’d be content to retire to a remote hillside somewhere, to grow his own food, make his own medicine and drink his matcha. The gap between that dream and this reality doesn’t seem to matter to him. He’s playing baseball.
For most of last weekend’s four-game series between Toronto and New York, the different levels of the new plutocrat’s paradise in the Bronx were soaked pretty thoroughly in blue. There was singing and bell-ringing. Out on the field, there was a pretty decisive pounding handed out by the Jays and the likely end of the last pennant race in baseball.
They should just play for the love of the game! Love of the game can pay the rent.
I agree 100% with Dave that context matters when we are talking about the MVP. As I’ve mentioned before on this site, WAR is a great overall stat. Other than a general ranking, it’s not something that people should be using in MVP arguments. Unfortunately, it’s also not perfectly suited for a “best player” arguments as well because, although it eliminates a certain amount of context, it doesn’t eliminate enough.
Oh boy. Is the team really this hard up for cash?
Right now the Braves are just dreadful. Will the Blue Jays take full advantage?
OK, this is too long for me to read right now but a bunch of people on Twitter are saying nice things about it. A quick skim suggests they might be onto something.
