Grantland (Lindbergh): 2015 AL West Preview

I enjoy these previews but it’s hard to see how every team will hit the “over” on their projections.

Cubs send Bryant to minors

The Chicago Cubs have reassigned top prospect Kris Bryant, who leads the majors with nine spring training home runs, to their minor league camp. The Cubs made the move Monday, less than a week before they open their season against the St. Louis Cardinals.

“We entered camp with the presumptive move being to send him to Triple-A,” Cubs president Theo Epstein said. “It’s always the presumptive [move] for us move with young players that haven’t played in the big leagues yet.”

Bryant, 23, led the ...

Pitching change: Rockies have a plan to improve on the mound | FOX Sports

OK, it sounds like the Rockies’ baseball operation department isn’t as dysfunctional as it may have been. Just getting along better won’t necessarily improve the performance on the field, though. It may but it may not.

The MLBPA Has a Problem | FanGraphs Baseball

Nathaniel Grow makes some great points about the growing gap between baseball’s revenues and the players’ share of those revenues. Do you know what be a great thing for the MLBPA to work toward in the next CBA? A guaranteed portion of the revenue for minor leaguers. I won’t hold my breath.

Soccer team reenacts George Brett’s pine tar incident at Yankee Stadium

On Saturday, the schedule called for a Major League Soccer matchup between the home-standing NYCFC squad — which is actually co-owned by the New York Yankees — and Sporting Kansas City. With the stadium clear of fans and presumably only a few stadium workers on hand, three players from the Kansas City team took the field to reenact one of baseball’s most famous — or infamous — scenes: the George Brett pine tar incident from July 24, 1983.

Twins offering bloody mary garnished with cold slice of pizza

The Minnesota Twins introduced the $19 “College Daze Bloody Mary,” which comes garnished with a cold slice of pepperoni pizza in addition to many of the usual fixings one might be accustomed to.

And here’s the full description, courtesy of Hrbeks’.

This Bloody Mary will bring back the memories (or not)! This cool Bloody Mary gets a cold slice of Pepperoni Pizza which is just what you need with a Bloody Mary! If that wasn’t enough you also get all the other fixings! Beef Stick, Pepper Jack ...

This week’s must-read books | New York Post

I’m about 1/3 done with my copy (which I paid for). The book is a great piece of research and very entertaining as well. In short, the book is great.

GMs have always been a special interest for me and I read every GM biography I find. I now have few new ones on my list because of the thoroughness of the book’s research. If you are a visitor to the site and are interested in the topic, do yourself a favor and get this book. I cannot recommend it enough.

The Mets like Montero better. Unless someone steps up and gives them something for him, though, the Mets are starting Gee and putting Montero in the pen. When is the MLBPA filing a grievance?

Red Sox trade for new catcher with Christian Vazquez sidelined - Over the Monster

According to the report, the Red Sox pick up catcher Sandy Leon from the Nationals for cash. They plan on using him as a backup for Ryan Hanigan.

The Red Sox will end up without their expected starting catcher, as Christian Vazquez is set to receive a second opinion from elbow expert Dr. James Andrews. While that won’t happen until Wednesday, the Red Sox aren’t taking any chances, and have added another catcher to the organization just in case. Sandy Leon, a 26-year-old backstop in the ...

[Herb Hester] needs about $4000 in cash to start the season, and he asks for it out of the individual pockets of the people who go to ball games. Instead of stock, he will issue a flock of rattling good baseball at one simoleon per ticket.

Arizona Diamondbacks encouraged by Yoan Lopez’s progress

Still, Lopez hasn’t yet shown the pure power stuff the Diamondbacks saw before they signed him. On the day they gave the Cuban right-hander an $8.27 million deal — and had to pay another $8 million in penalties for exceeding their bonus pool — Diamondbacks General Manager Dave Stewart compared Lopez’s upside to that of a No. 1 overall pick. Stewart said Lopez had a mid-90s fastball that approached triple digits.

This spring, Lopez has mostly sat in the low-90s. In his start on Tuesday, he ...

Nats have tough decision to make on Uggla

Is it ableist to keep the good players and unload a few Ugglas?

[Dan] Uggla’s disastrous 2014 with the Braves (and briefly the Giants) left him in this position, forced to accept a minor-league contract with the Nationals and nothing more than an opportunity to compete for a spot on the big-league roster.

Thing is, Uggla’s performance this spring suggests he is worthy of making a big-league club. An 0-for-3 showing Saturday in Port St. Lucie dropped his batting average from .303 to .278, ...

Spring training is horribly, utterly broken; here’s how it can be fixed

We talkin’ bout practice????

The schedule isn’t going to shrink back to the 25-game range of the mid-80s because all the municipalities that agreed to build the mega two-team complexes now in vogue demand 30 spring dates out of their stadiums to pay the bills.

Fine. Make the front end of spring training all about top prospects. Reverse the reporting dates now in existence. Have a manageable number of minor leaguers - lord knows they could all use the instruction from and interaction with ...

Posnanski: A Baseball Story

Then there was Bobby Bragan, who would confess that he was willing to give up his career to make this stand. In later years, he explained: He saw blacks as inferior to whites. He did not know how to tell his family and friends that he was playing baseball with a black person. He did not see this as hateful or even objectionable; it was simply his view of the world. Bragan asked to be traded.

The Dodgers didn’t need him. He was a backup catcher who was only good for a few dozen at-bats. He ...

Josh Hamilton and C.J. Wilson banners removed from Angel Stadium entrance

With that in mind, MLB.com points out that this season’s Angels banners have undergone some major changes despite the team making few significant changes during the offseason. Of the six banners, only Mike Trout, Albert Pujols and Jered Weaver remain from last season. Basic math tells us that means three banners were removed and three new banners were put up in their place. As for those removed, according to MLB.com, those would be Josh Hamilton, C.J. Wilson and Howie Kendrick.

Feeling left arm fatigue, Garcia unlikely for Opening Day | cardinals.com

Just as the Cardinals began to allow themselves to get excited about what a healthy Jaime Garcia could add to their rotation, the lefty suffered another medical setback that will almost certainly preclude him from making the Opening Day roster.

Manager Mike Matheny announced after the club’s 4-3 loss to the Tigers that Garcia was scratched from his scheduled start on Sunday after he alerted the team’s medical staff on Saturday afternoon that “he’s feeling something that isn’t right.”

Did David Ortiz admit to more than he realized with his Players’ Tribune editorial?

Interesting speculation on the Ortiz piece from Calcaterra.

So let’s go back to David Ortiz. He claims he’s been tested 80 times in the decade or so there has been drug testing. That’s an awful lot of testing, especially when you consider that the blood testing just started last year. And that, until last year, the number of in-season random tests was less than half of what it is now. Given that a player not “in the program” gets, at most, four tests a year and more likely 2-3 (less ...

Hanigan is bummed out about injury to Vazquez | redsox.com

This doesn’t sound too promising.

“When you find out what the deal is, all you can do is feel for the kid,” said Hanigan. “He was pumped up, excited, ready to go. It’s just a tough thing, but he’ll be back.”

All the Red Sox have said for sure is that they found “something” in the MRI conducted on Vazquez.

If that something includes ligament damage, Vazquez would face the possibility of Tommy John surgery, a fate that Orioles catcher Matt Wieters faced last year.
