Dominican Republic and its fans electrify World Baseball Classic | FOX Sports

FRS MLBRumors & Rumblings: Jose Quintana’s stock rises even higher

I turned on the game and watched a few pitches and wondered, “Who is this guy?” Although I watched him pitch a few times, I didn’t recognize his stuff, which was ticked up. My next thought was, “The White Sox might not like this if he’s hurt in a month.”

The United States rallied against Colombia’s bullpen for a 3-2 win in 10 innings but Quintana wowed the scouts in attendance.

“Everyone knows he’s a heckuva pitcher but that might had been the best I have ever seen him, considering it’s ...

Salvador Perez injured after Drew Butera collided with him at the WBC

Royals catcher Drew Butera tried to score the winning run for Team Italy in the bottom of the ninth inning against Team Venezuela. Unfortunately, Butera ran into the left knee of Venezuela catcher Salvador Perez, his Royals teammate.

Butera told Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com: “I feel really bad. But I thought the ball was going to be in the gap and I was just trying to score. When I saw that I was going to be out by a lot I just stopped. It was unfortunate that I hit him where I did.”

Nationals place Derek Norris on waivers

Derek Norris, who lost his starting catching job with the Washington Nationals due to the late signing of Matt Wieters, has been placed on waivers by Washington.

There is no likelihood anyone would claim him and take his $4.2-million salary at this stage, but the Nats are believed only responsible for 30 days termination pay (around $700K) if, as expected, they wind up releasing him. Arbitration year salaries are generally not fully guaranteed. Teams can release those players and pay only ...

Mets’ Zack Wheeler provides hope after 2-year absence

Mets pitcher Zack Wheeler took the mound for the first time since Tommy John surgery almost two years ago against the Braves at Champion Stadium on Friday.

Wheeler threw 31 pitches—short of his team-imposed 35-pitch limit—and hit 94 mph on the gun. He gave up two hits and a walk and whiffed a batter.

“They say he threw the ball fine, two innings. Obviously less than the 35 pitches which was going to be max, but those were good signs,” said manager Terry Collins, who stayed at the team’s ...

MLB clubs perpetuate idea that U.S. players don’t care about World Baseball Classic | FOX Sports

This is an exhibition series. As much as I enjoy it, I wouldn’t want my favorite team’s pitchers get blown out participating and end up missing significant time away from their paid job.

This is not a criticism of Archer, who surely loves the U.S. as much as Quintana loves Colombia, and said that the sequence of events leading to Colombia’s go-ahead rally left him “sick to his stomach.”

The blame goes to clubs like the Rays, who contribute to the perception that U.S. cares less about the ...

Heyman: Pagan Had Agreement With Orioles Before Issue With Physical

The O’s and their pesky physicals.

Free agent outfielder Angel Pagan had an agreement with the Orioles before an issue with the physical scuttled‎ the deal, sources tell FanRag Sports.

It isn‎’t known when the physical took place or what issue came up, but Pagan is obviously well enough to play the outfield for Team Puerto Rico in the WBC.

Woman arrested for stalking Tim Tebow

The responding officer noticed she had an “I [heart symbol] Jesus/Tim Tebow” on the back of her driver’s license and that Thompson told police she lived with Tebow in Jacksonville, Florida. After the police officer asked whether Thompson was in a “friendly relationship, a platonic relationship, a romantic relationship or possibly a matrimonial relationship,” Thompson giggled and said “all of the above.”

USA avoids upset with walkoff win over Colombia in World Baseball Classic

Jose Quintana was fantastic, but his bullpen blew it, but he should be used to that by now.

Adam Jones’ RBI single in the 10th inning drove in the winning run as the U.S. barely escaped falling victim to one of the biggest upsets in the WBC’s three-edition history.

The U.S. didn’t advance farther than the semifinals – and did that just once – in the previous three editions of the WBC, and it would have been in a precarious position had it lost its tournament opener to a heavy ...

Cubs, Kris Bryant Agree To Record Pre-Arb Deal

The Cubs have agreed with star third baseman Kris Bryant on a record-setting pre-arbitration salary, Jon Heyman of Fan Rag reports. Fresh off of a year in which he won the National League’s Most Valuable Player award, Bryant will take home $1.05MM.

Chicago also shared some of its World Series wealth with righty Kyle Hendricks, who’ll earn a hefty $760,500, per Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times. Hendricks was another key performer for the Cubs, turning in an outstanding campaign ...

Is Kyle Hendricks a No. 1-quality starter? Maddon says not yet – Chicago Sun-Times

Maddon believes a “slight regression,” at the least, on Hendricks’ part is likely just because his 2016 numbers were off-the-charts good. But the 27-year-old Hendricks isn’t wired to think that way. He doesn’t really think about numbers at all.

It isn’t just talk when Hendricks says he’s about commanding his pitches and thinking one step ahead of the hitter, and let the numbers fall where they may. It’s entirely how he approaches the game, and what makes him so good.

While the world has changed in any number of ways since then, Girardi believes the policy still makes sense for today’s game.

“I think it has value because it’s a tradition,” Girardi said. “It’s a tradition by a man that meant so much to this organization, and if it’s important to him and it’s important to his family, then it needs to be respected by all of us and important to us. That’s the bottom line.”

Clint Frazier’s hair was too much for the Yankees

The top outfield prospect, known for his flowing red locks, was shorn Friday morning after his long hair apparently became too much of an issue around Yankees spring training.

The cut, at 7:15 a.m. in the clubhouse at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, from a barber visiting special for the occasion, was scheduled after Frazier spoke with Yankees manager Joe Girardi about his personal style expression. The Yankees have a long-standing policy forbidding facial hair or overly long hair.

MLB Teams With the Most Dead Money

Last season, there was around $136 million in dead money on payroll. This season, that amount has doubled. In terms of teams paying the most, the Dodgers have a healthy lead, with the Padres and Yankees also devoting some payroll to players not contributing to the current club…..

In terms of payroll on the field, the Padres might rival the Houston Astros team from 2013 that opened with a $26 million payroll. Billy Butler and Brandon Phillips account for a fairly significant portion of the ...

RYAN CHURCH AND THE CONCUSSION THAT ENDED HIS CAREER

Then came May 20, 2008. A day that forever changed the course of Church’s baseball career, and subsequently his life. In the second game of a doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves, the Mets found themselves down to their final pair of outs at Turner Field. As he was trying to break-up a game-ending double play off the bat of Damien Easley, Church’s head viciously collided with the knee of Braves shortstop Yunel Escobar. The impact knocked off Church’s helmet, where his head then slammed ...

The Easiest Question in Baseball History Might Have a New Answer

What if the easiest question in the history of baseball is about to get a different answer?

What if Albert Pujols – not Lou Gehrig – is the ...

Mookie Betts Cleanup - Unorthodox But Don’t Freak Out

So, John Farrell is tinkering with the idea that Andrew Benintendi might hit third, sliding Mookie betts down to the cleanup spot…

Some of the initial reaction when Ken Rosenthal first surfaced this notion late Wednesday focused on the concern over Betts, the American League MVP runner-up, potentially not getting to the plate in the first inning.

Fair.

But understand that cleanup hitters more times than not actually do hit in the first, which means they are coming to the plate with runners ...

Why Max Scherzer is a true rarity among baseball’s best pitchers | FOX Sports

Scherzer, early in his career, struggled to identify the proper off-season throwing program.

“I had problems up to 2012,” Scherzer said. “It all stemmed from one thing — taking time off.

“The baseball book says don’t throw a ball until Jan. 1. And that’s what I did. I never touched a ball in October, November, December. Then, when I would start my throwing, my shoulder would kill.”

So after ’12, Scherzer stopped shutting down his arm once the season ended, playing catch on ...
