MLB drops the ball in ruling Mexico out of the World Baseball Classic

This is a great lesson in why rules need to have clearly defined terms. Are “defensive innings” the number of innings pitched or does any inning in which a team plays defense constitute a defensive inning. The phrase “including partial innings” does not solve the ambiguity.

Young Acuna raising eyebrows at Braves camp

TAMPA, Fla.—Ronald Acuna has steadily become a well-known figure among Braves fans since he caught the attention of Bobby Cox and some of Atlanta’s upper-level executives during the 2015 Instructional League. But the 19-year-old outfielder’s legend has truly grown since he came to this year’s Spring Training and gained the welcome surprise he would have a chance to compete in some big league exhibition games.

Though he has been used simply as an extra called over from Minor League camp, Acuna ...

Phillies get ambidextrous

The Phillies made a minor trade with fun implications today, flipping outfield prospect Joey Curletta to the Seattle Mariners for switch pitcher Pat Venditte. Both Curletta and Venditte are off of 40-man rosters, so there will be no corresponding moves needed.  Curletta was the player to be named later in the Carlos Ruiz deal (the other two pieces being A.J. Ellis and RHP Tommy Bergjans).

The win-now and win-later windows of the 2017 baseball season

The Giants come close, but baseball really doesn’t have a team that’s analogous to the 2011 Phillies, which means we’ll focus on that scrum closer toward the top of the Y-axis. Here’s a quick thumbnail sketch of why each of those teams are so high on the window-shut-o-meter:

The Tigers are old and they have a bunch of long-term contracts on the books
The Royals have a bunch of free agents after the season, and they’ve already spent a lot more than they normally do
The Mariners are ...

Manny Ramirez’s Japan Baseball Contract Includes Infinite Sushi, Optional Practice

Manny Ramirez apparently has earned the right to live the high life in Japanese baseball. The former Boston Red Sox slugger and 2017 Baseball Hall of Fame nominee last Thursday signed a contract with the Kochi Island Fighting Dogs of Japan’s independent league. His deal includes some eye-popping details, which The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier reported Monday, citing Yakyudb.com, that should warm the hearts of his fans. They include:

A Mercedes car and a driver

Padres to sign Cuban lefty Osvaldo Hernandez

The Padres have agreed to sign Cuban pitching prospect Osvaldo Hernandez for $2.5 million, according to a source. The 18-year-old left-hander will join a record-breaking international class on which the Padres have spent roughly $80 million since July 2.

Hernandez, who was declared a free agent last month, drew interest from several other teams, including the Astros, Cardinals and Braves. The 6-footer has a fastball that reaches 94 mph. His secondary pitches — a curveball, slider and ...

2017 Top 100 Prospects | FanGraphs Baseball

I’ve enjoyed Eric Longenhagen’s prospect reports over at Fangraphs. Unfortunately, he’s a one-man show which means it will take him forever to get his team reports done. I was a little concerned his top 100 list would come out so late it wouldn’t be usable in fantasy drafts. Not any more. His list is up.

Mariners utilityman Taylor Motter in a league of his own when it comes to hair flips | The News Tribune

He’d better hope he doesn’t get traded to the Yankees.

“He’s certainly got tremendous hair flip,” manager Scott Servais said. “In Seattle, I can (already) hear the crowd holding their breath until he flips it back up again.

“I’m sure (marketing vice president Kevin) Martinez has T-shirts coming. I can see the whole thing (unfolding). We’ll see.”

Harrisburg Telegraph, March 13, 1917:

It was learned [in Pittsburgh] yesterday that there is little likelihood of Honus Wagner ever again playing professional baseball. Wagner’s business and legal representative is authority for the statement that the famous Dutchman has about concluded arrangements to enter the oil producing business with Fred Clarke, former manager of the Pirates, regardless of what the Pittsburgh club offers him in the way of salary for the coming season.

OTP 13 March 2017: A Week in Breitbart Sports

DJ Gallo spends a week reading Breitbart Sports so we don’t have to:

I always endeavor to watch sports, if for no other reason than to gain a brief escape from the rest of our hyper-partisan culture. But then I happened to discover that there is something called Breitbart Sports. Yes, Breitbart.com, the flagship website of the nationalistic, alt-right. The angry white man to the New York Times’ old gray lady, the publication whose headlines (and longtime publisher) have somehow come to ...

MLB’s International Prospect Showcase Is Shifting Power Back to Young Latino Peloteros

Allow me a brief anecdote: one of my old teammates (we’ll call him Raul) told me that his buscone took half of his signing bonus, and overcharged him for the steroids he said were necessary. Raul always wanted to move to New York City; consider his story similar to the plot of Sugar, where a Dominican pitching prospect quits on baseball after a few disorienting years in the minors to pursue his passion for carpentry. Only difference is that Raul wanted to sell drugs, “como Biggie”.  I ...

Pirates’ Jung Ho Kang placed on restricted list as he awaits visa

The probability third baseman Jung Ho Kang will play for the Pirates on opening day continues to plummet. On Friday, a week after receiving a suspended sentence for his third DUI in South Korea, Kang was officially placed on the major league restricted list.

Pirates president Frank Coonelly described the move as “a procedural matter.” Kang has yet to receive his visa for travel to the United States, and there is no known deadline for that decision.

“It is neither a statement of ...

“We had a much more targeted list of players who we felt fit our needs,” explained Dipoto. “Last year, when I first got here, we didn’t want to start trading off, wholesale, players from the minor leagues who we didn’t know and hadn’t had a chance to evaluate. But we knew we had needs (and) we filled those needs with one-year players, like Adam Lind, Dae-Ho Lee, Nori Aoki, Chris Iannetta, Seth Smith on a one-plus-one.

Thornburg said that after the December trade, he was sent a list of exercises from the training staff. The message he did not receive was that all of the exercises were to be performed daily.

“I kind of figured that this is a list of the exercises they incorporated, I didn’t think this is what they do all in one day,” said Thornburg. “I thought, ‘here’s a list of exercises, learn them, pick five or six of them,’ because that was pretty much what we did in Milwaukee.”

FRS MLBRumors & Rumblings: Jose Quintana’s stock rises even higher

I turned on the game and watched a few pitches and wondered, “Who is this guy?” Although I watched him pitch a few times, I didn’t recognize his stuff, which was ticked up. My next thought was, “The White Sox might not like this if he’s hurt in a month.”

The United States rallied against Colombia’s bullpen for a 3-2 win in 10 innings but Quintana wowed the scouts in attendance.

“Everyone knows he’s a heckuva pitcher but that might had been the best I have ever seen him, considering it’s ...

Salvador Perez injured after Drew Butera collided with him at the WBC

Royals catcher Drew Butera tried to score the winning run for Team Italy in the bottom of the ninth inning against Team Venezuela. Unfortunately, Butera ran into the left knee of Venezuela catcher Salvador Perez, his Royals teammate.

Butera told Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com: “I feel really bad. But I thought the ball was going to be in the gap and I was just trying to score. When I saw that I was going to be out by a lot I just stopped. It was unfortunate that I hit him where I did.”

Nationals place Derek Norris on waivers

Derek Norris, who lost his starting catching job with the Washington Nationals due to the late signing of Matt Wieters, has been placed on waivers by Washington.

There is no likelihood anyone would claim him and take his $4.2-million salary at this stage, but the Nats are believed only responsible for 30 days termination pay (around $700K) if, as expected, they wind up releasing him. Arbitration year salaries are generally not fully guaranteed. Teams can release those players and pay only ...

Mets’ Zack Wheeler provides hope after 2-year absence

Mets pitcher Zack Wheeler took the mound for the first time since Tommy John surgery almost two years ago against the Braves at Champion Stadium on Friday.

Wheeler threw 31 pitches—short of his team-imposed 35-pitch limit—and hit 94 mph on the gun. He gave up two hits and a walk and whiffed a batter.

“They say he threw the ball fine, two innings. Obviously less than the 35 pitches which was going to be max, but those were good signs,” said manager Terry Collins, who stayed at the team’s ...
