Calcaterra: Given all the advantages he’s had, is Brian Cashman the 21st best GM of all time?

The Yankees were already good — heck, they had already won a World Series — when Brian Cashman took over. They had Jeter and Mo and all of those guys and more money than God. It’d be harder, under those circumstances, to lose than it would be to win, right?

On a related note, is Luis Sojo the 21st-greatest Yankee player of all time?

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 1-20-2015

Pittsburgh Press, January 20, 1915:

The Cleveland Naps are to be called Indians hereafter. Unless all signs fail, the Indians are in for a scalping next summer.

Washington Herald, January 20, 1915:

Possibly the owners of the Cleveland club, by changing the name of the Sixth City club from “Naps” to “Indians” had in mind the Boston Braves.

This makes so much more sense than the strained explanation about honoring Louis Sockalexis.

Brewers committed to Jimmy Nelson, so scratch Jordan Zimmermann | FOX Sports

As Melvin told me: “Jimmy Nelson is in the rotation.”

OK, then.

So, it appears the Brewers will enter the 2015 season with Kyle Lohse, Matt Garza, Wily Peralta, Mike Fiers and Nelson.

No Zimmermann. No James Shields, either.

The Cubs are close to acquiring outfielder Dexter Fowler from the Astros, Bruce Levine of 670thescore.com tweets. The Astros will receive big-league players in return, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets, and one of those is pitcher Dan Straily, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle notes (on Twitter)...

Philadelphia Evening Public Ledger, January 19, 1915:

“Will you please deny for me the stories printed in several New York papers that I was a candidate for the position of secretary or business manager of the Yankees,” writes Ed Barrow, president of the International League. “These stories were copied by the papers of our circuit and have caused some unpleasant and unfavorable comment on the part of several sporting writers.”

Making small sample defensive metrics less volatile - Beyond the Box Score

What do I see? Well, raw IERP (and also raw DRS, not shown) has the same volatility as BABIP. Annual BABIP is mostly a crapshoot, so that confirms my expectation. ISO, wRC+ (and also wOBA, SLG, OBP, though not shown) are a fair bit better than BABIP. I don’t know about you, but when I see a one-year jump in ISO or wRC+, that’s a cause for interest. A one year blip may be a “breakout”, or the change might not last. We need to look deeper. Self-regression of IERP achieves that level of ...

Max Scherzer closing in on new multiyear contract - ESPN

According to the Washington Post, the Nationals are the favorite to land Scherzer and are “very close” to a deal.

A source told ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark that the Nationals won’t have the financial flexibility to sign Scherzer unless they have a trade in place to move starter Jordan Zimmermann and possibly shortstop Ian Desmond. As of Saturday, Stark reports, the Nationals did not have trades in place for either Zimmermann or Desmond.

Bloop Hits: Terry Forster’s musical feast

I saw someone here refer to Forster’s batting average champ status, so, why not.

Though he was never an All-Star, never won any awards, Terry Forster — who turned 63 this week — had a pretty interesting big-league career. In addition to leading the American League in saves with the ’74 White Sox, winning a championship ring with the ’81 Dodgers, and making 614 appearances (most of them in relief) over the course of 16 years in the majors, the left-hander was also the last A.L. pitcher to ...

Norichika Aoki signs with Giants

Norichika Aoki signed a one-year, $4.7 million contract with the Giants on Friday.

The deal is for 2015 plus a club option for 2016, a relatively short-term contract for someone reportedly seeking a multi-year pact. Aoki will earn $4 million in 2015, per Shea, plus a $5.5 million option, plus up to $1.5 million annually in performance bonuses. The 2016 option comes with a $700,000 buyout.

And a mandatory refresher on the player the Giants are acquiring.

MLB to use pitch clock in Double-A, Triple-A games - ESPN

Do they really need a clock? Can’t the umpires just speed up the pace by making the batters get in the box quicker and making the pitcher deliver the ball as soon as the batter is in the box? The Rules of Play already cover this. Rule 6 (The Batter) and Rule 8 (The Pitcher) already place time limits on the batter and pitcher. So, they don’t need to change the rules; they just need to enforce them.

Hart says he will not trade Kimbrel « Bowman’s Blog

Kimbrel was a topic of conversation for some of the MLB Radio shows yesterday. In the morning Steve Phillips insisted he had to go. In the afternoon a host insisted he shouldn’t go anywhere. IMHO, it depends on their timeline. If they truly believe they can be competitive when the new park opens, they should hold onto him. If their timeline is longer than it makes sense to send him away for more prospects. John Hart has stated that he believes the Braves can be competitive for a playoff spot in ...

Arthur Rhodes officially retires

MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon reports that reliever Arthur Rhodes has officially retired from baseball.

Rhodes hasn’t pitched since 2011, but I think he still deserves a proper sendoff. 20 years, 900 games, 1,152 strikeouts, one All-Star berth, and two of the biggest earrings you ever saw.

Cardinals fans voted most insufferable.

St. Louis Cardinals fans – enduring a month of voting by readers of Ball Eight – were chosen as the “Most Insufferable Fans” in baseball. After easily advancing to the finals, Cardinals fans dismantled Yankees fans 77 percent to 23 percent – a bigger margin of victory even than the semifinals against Braves fans.
