MLB teams missed boat on Mike Trout in Draft | MLB.com

New Jersey ballplayers discriminated against. When and where is the rally?

“If there had been even one great prospect to come out of New Jersey in a while, it would probably have been different,” Royals assistant general manager J.J. Picollo said. “But there really hadn’t been. One thing we look for as scouts, like it or not, are patterns. I can assure you that after Mike Trout, there won’t be another New Jersey prospect who gets missed like that.”

Will the Marlins’ financial mess scare off Derek Jeter and other buyers?

Could Jeter decide to cure cancer this summer? Of course he can. He’s Derek Jeter.

The biggest question about Derek Jeter’s interest in the Miami Marlins isn’t whether he can round up the money to buy the club. Of course he can. He’s Derek Jeter. The ultra-wealthy would line up to partner with him.

No, it’s whether Jeter wants to be the person to wade into the muck and mire that is the Marlins’ financial situation, which multiple sources familiar with it deemed “toxic,” “a ...

Klapisch: Is this the return of the Dark Knight?

Except for two fastballs to Matt Kemp, Harvey looked great yesterday. If he can carry forward this to future starts, he might be the Mets 1B.

Remember, though, this is a work in progress for Harvey. There’s no guarantee he’ll become the monster who dominated the National League four years ago. But if early impressions mean anything, Harvey’s arm is healthy again and has coupled the restored health with a better, more mature understanding of how to get through an opposing lineup a second ...

Fox in danger of a blackout on Charter cable systems

Looks like we have yet another cable dispute on our hands and this one involves one of the major network groups. Fox is warning of a potential blackout of its networks on Charter Communications and it could happen as early as this weekend. This doesn’t just involve the Fox broadcast network, but its cable channels including FS1 and its Fox Sports Net regional channels.

In a statement, a Fox spokesman said this will leave many subscribers on Charter’s Spectrum systems without some major ...

Sheehan on Fangraphs: Un-Breaking the Wand

The place I helped build, the site you’re on now… this is the mainstream media. That’s not a pejorative. I write for Sports Illustrated. Christina Kahrl is an editor at ESPN.com. Rob Neyer was on FS1’s baseball coverage. Jay Jaffe goes on MLB Network, as do Dave Cameron and Jeff Sullivan. We’re not that long removed from MLB refusing to let me into the Rule 5 draft in Dallas.

MLBers’ Al Jazeera Suit Could Chill Future Doping Coverage

A D.C. federal judge last week raised eyebrows by allowing defamation claims by two Major League Baseball stars to move forward against Al Jazeera over a 2015 investigative documentary that included claims they had used banned performance-enhancing drugs, sending a warning to reporters covering the underworld of doping to more thoroughly scrutinize sources.

Last Friday, U.S. District Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson refused to toss defamation claims by Ryan Zimmerman, who plays for the Washington ...

Why playing in the WBC actually might be safer than spring training

The positions of those officials are understandable, given the seemingly greater injury risk for players under the intensity of international competition, as opposed to the relative indifference of spring-training games.

Yet, according to figures compiled by Major League Baseball, players who participated in the past two tournaments actually got hurt at a lower rate than players who did not.

Among pitchers on 40-man rosters, only one of 40 from the 2013 tournament (2.5 percent) opened the ...

Pittsburgh Press, April 7, 1917:

Strunk refused to run out infield hits this spring and instead of taking kindly to the advise [sic] given him by Mack, sulked and in Charlotte failed to put in an appearance for the game.

Mack stated that he would not have any disgruntled star upon his team and that Strunk had not spoken to him for 10 days.

Tim Tebow hits two-run homer in first minor league at-bat

Tim Tebow’s minor league baseball career couldn’t have started in more magical fashion.

In his first at-bat for the Class A Columbia Fireflies, the former Heisman Trophy winner drove a 2-1 pitch from Augusta GreenJackets lefty Domenic Mazza off and over the fence in left field for a two-run home run, sending a capacity crowd at Spirit Communications Park into a disbelieving frenzy.

Daily News - Ackert:  Matt Harvey gives Mets reason to be optimistic in first start since July

That is what Mets fans were hoping they would finally see Thursday night: old-school Matt Harvey. As he walked off the mound, after pitching 6.2 solid innings in the Mets’ 6-2 win over the Braves, that is what brought the fans to their feet to cheer him off the field.

“I remember getting booed off the field last year,” Harvey said with a laugh, “so I think flipping that switch a little bit, it was exciting.”

His first start since July 4, when he was shut down with Thoracic Outlet ...

Yadier Molina completely fooled by a bizarre twist on the ‘hidden ball’ trick

Yadier Molina – an eight-time Gold Glover who never looks foolish behind the plate – tried to block a ball in the dirt. He was successful but didn’t realize it. As he looked around frantically for the ball, he didn’t realize it was somehow stuck to his chest protector.

What is this sorcery?!?

Molina couldn’t do that again if he tried – and he probably won’t. That wild pitch resulted in a strikeout, but Matt Szczur reached first on the folly. Jon Jay followed with a walk, and ...

Suspended Reds prospect posted videos of apparent drug use on Snapchat

Cincinnati Reds pitcher Ian Kahaloa was suspended for 50 games by the league Tuesday after he failed his second test for a drug of abuse. At some point after he submitted that sample, but before his suspension was announced, the 19-year-old appears to have posted videos of his drug use on Snapchat.

Those videos were discovered by Twitter user @Reds_1fan. There are four clips posted in total, two of which appear to feature drugs, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

One of those videos shows ...

Braves To Sign Ryan Howard

The Braves have agreed to a minor-league deal with veteran slugger Ryan Howard, according to MLB.com’s Mark Bowman (Twitter link). He’ll head to extended Spring Training before taking a minor-league assignment.

Howard, 37, had a quiet offseason after the Phillies declined a club option following the 2016 campaign. But he’s now headed to a division rival after wrapping up a 13-year run in Philly.

I’m really not sure how I feel about this…

Pros: farmhands get used to Fenway quirks, easier for team to forecast “how they’ll hit in Fenway”

Cons: seems like it would inevitably cost more, does it make “real” Fenway seem less special?

The club announced that Richards’ removal was precautionary, and he said afterward that he wasn’t concerned about the issue, which was called a cramping of his right biceps.

How MLB Is Breaking Down Its Long-Standing Language Barrier

When I first got here, I didn’t know how to say ‘hi,’ nothing — I didn’t know what it means” he says. “In our country, we take English classes, but it’s not the same. You’ve got a teacher that reads in English and we repeat, but we don’t know what we’re saying. So it doesn’t make sense.
