Outfielder David Dahl, the Colorado Rockies’ top prospect, was scheduled to undergo surgery Monday to have his spleen removed at a Hartford, Connecticut, hospital, four days after being involved in a serious collision while playing for the organization’s Double-A club.
Dahl made the decision after consulting with the Rockies, said his agent, Adam Karon. Dahl was initially expected to miss the rest of the season while his lacerated spleen healed. Now he is hoping to return in four to six ...

Los Angeles signed six future All-Stars in 1968 who would combine for 23 All-Star Game appearances, both Draft records. Washburn (Kan.) University outfielder Davey Lopes was a second-rounder in the January secondary phase, while California high school first baseman Bill Buckner (second), University of Houston outfielder/defensive back Tom Paciorek (fifth) and Alabama prep right-hander Doyle Alexander (ninth) were part of the regular June Draft. The cherry on top was a pair of college third ...
KOKOMO, IND. — A dispute involving the federal and state governments over how Kokomo built part of a baseball stadium in a flood-prone area meant to remain green space has been resolved on the eve of the opening game.
Gov. Mike Pence said in a news release Friday that a dispute involving the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security had been settled, commending the two agencies for “working together in good faith.”

I missed the MLB Draft Special. Here’s a look at one player.

He’s making the most of that chance thus far. The oft-criticized infielder was a major reason the Mets avoided a sweep at the hands of the Marlins on Sunday, driving in the game-winning run with a double in the 4-3 victory at Citi Field.
That was just a microcosm of his big weekend. Tejada played a solid third base and went 5-for-12 at the plate, including a three-run double in Saturday’s 9-5 loss. Of his eight RBIs this year, seven have come against the struggling Marlins.
He was so ...

I estimate only 10-12 Primates care about the NBA, but with our own thread, we won’t detract from what this site is really about: trusting the Red Sox process.
Admittedly overcome by emotion as the Cardinals reflected on the one-year anniversary of Taveras’ debut, Martinez turned away while a video tribute played above him.
“In that moment in the bullpen, I had seen too much,” Martinez said, speaking via a translator. “For a second, I thought, ‘Oh man, I don’t know if I can throw today because I’m so sad.’”
“You saw that it was hard for him to see that,” added catcher Yadier Molina, who was with Martinez in the ‘pen.
Martinez wiped away tears as ...
In what turned out to be baseball’s equivalent of a New York minute, on September 28, 1919, the New York Giants beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-1 in a contest that lasted only 51 minutes, still a Major League record for a nine-inning game. Almost 87 years later, on August 18, 2006, the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox played the longest ever nine-inning game, taking 4 hours and 45 minutes—more than five times as long as the Giants and Phils—to complete a 14-11 struggle.

Obviously, June is going to be a crucial month for the Marlins, who put themselves in a big hole at 20-31. Already, some in the New York media are speculating that the Mets may be able to pry Martin Prado away from Miami to provide insurance in case David Wright doesn’t return.
From what I’m told, the Marlins have not quit on the season. They aren’t thinking about trading away core pieces. Dealing Prado doesn’t make much sense for Miami, especially since he is under contract through ...

Pittsburgh Press, June 1, 1915:
Hap Hogan, the Los Angeles baseball leader…was one of the unique figures of the game.
One day he was catching at Los Angeles and engaged in a long continued “chewing match” with the umpire, who was having a bad day on balls and strikes.
Finally the exasperated umpire warned him. Happy subsided and for half an inning said not a word. Then the pitcher cut the corner of the plate with a fast ball. “Ball,” yelled the umpire. Happy said not a word. He turned ...
May Madness came to a crazed ending for Jason Kipnis. In a way, it made perfect sense based on what the Indians second baseman has done this month.
Kipnis doubled twice, scored a run and drove in a run Sunday as the Indians beat Seattle, 6-3, in 12 innings at Safeco Field. The victory closed the curtain on a sizzling month by Kipnis.
He hit .429 (51-for-119) with 30 runs, 15 doubles, four homers and 17 RBI in May. He hit safely in 25 of 29 games and collected 16 walks and three steals ...

Somebody really likes Francisco Cervelli.
I thought the bat rules were a safety issue?
“It was a first-pitch slider and I got it,” said Moyer, a junior. “I thought, ‘That’s a double off the wall.’ Then it kept going and going and went out. I went, ‘Welcome to the new year and the new ball.’”
Moyer had no home runs in 2014. He has hit 14 this season. Having another season of experience helped considerably, as did bulking up by 15 pounds. But Moyers admits that “three or four” of his home runs were aided by the baseball that was ...

“Overall, he looked like a guy who hadn’t pitched in a while,” said Toledo manager Larry Parrish, after his team’s 11-6 win. “I would think he would get one more rehab start. But that isn’t my decision.”
Verlander showed velocity – he touched 96 on the radar gun at Victory Field – but he was not able to blow it past any of these minor leaguers. Of his 50 strikes, only about a half dozen were swings and misses.
“Going two months without pitching, I don’t think you are going to feel ...

Texas Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre will miss at least two weeks after suffering a sprained left thumb and a cut that required four stitches in the fifth inning Sunday.
The Rangers said that Beltre was examined by team physician Dr. Keith Meister and was being fitting for a splint. The Rangers are off Monday and also have an off day June 8.
In the seventh inning on Sunday, Votto drew a three-ball walk against Nationals reliever Matt Grace. The Reds had already scored once to break a 2-2 tie prior to the walk, but they went on to score five more en route to an 8-2 win.
I didn’t realize the Canadian exchange rate had gotten so bad.

A must-watch that deserves its own thread.
I got your DH right here, Calcaterra. Why are you kicking the joy of baseball in the face?

Welcome back to a blogger with pre-registration Primate notoriety.
In 2015, by contrast to 2014, the Twins have held their opponents to 2 or fewer runs 4 more times than their opponents have and allowed 6 or more runs 7 fewer times. That would put them about 9 games over .500. Very close to where they actually are.

team’s main beat writer captures the ugliness that is brewer baseball
Swanson hit .333/.411/.475 with 27 doubles and three homers in 282 at-bats as a sophomore; he was at .350/.438/.654 with 21 doubles and 13 homers entering NCAA Regional play. Last year, he took home College World Series MVP honors as Vanderbilt won its first men’s title of any kind in school history.
“The thing that is noticeable about Dansby and guys like him who play at that level, is that they rise to another level when things matter,” Vanderbilt coach Tim Corbin said. “When something is on ...
This has to be frustrating.
This setback involves a different muscle in Doolittle’s shoulder than his previous injury. That offered scant solace as he contemplated at least two weeks of inactivity; only then will Doolittle pick up a baseball again and start another throwing program.
“It’s really frustrating to work your ass off for four months, come all the way back, throw one inning and then I’m back on the shelf,” he said.
The A’s activated Doolittle on Tuesday, after he made ...

It’s not easy following a legend.
When a player is struggling at the plate, he can go in the batting cage and tinker with his swing. If he is struggling in the field, he can take more ground balls. But how does a player improve his awareness?
“You have to play,” Girardi said. “You can’t simulate game speed and game conditions. As much as you try, you just can’t do it. They’ll work on a time clock sometimes with runners, and having to go to first base, but it’s not really the same. ...
Most of the WAR stuff I do now is geared to baseball sims. One of the issues I’ve been working on the last couple of years is the proper use of positional adjustments. From a practical standpoint, introducing a batting adjustment in runs prior to a conversion to wins actually makes it harder to compare players across positions during draft prep. Mediocre catchers and shortstops end up showing up too high in the overall rankings, which skews calculations for player dollar values in auctions. I ...Read More...

Michael Roth, who was featured in last week’s column, isn’t a fan of the term “pitching to contact.” As a matter of fact, the 25-year-old lefty calls it “the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.” He likes striking hitters out, he simply doesn’t do a whole lot of it. Pitching for Cleveland’s Triple-A affiliate, Roth has a 5.6 K/9 to go with a 5-1 record and a 3.24 ERA.
“People probably label me as a guy who pitches to contact, because I don’t strike a lot of guys out,” Roth ...
