News 8 analysis: Arlington could give away millions in stadium deal | WFAA.com

When $500 million isn’t enough.

City of Arlington officials have touted a “50-50” private-public partnership to build a proposed $1 billion retractable roof stadium for the Texas Rangers.

A WFAA-TV investigation, however, has found taxpayers may instead pick up to 80 percent of the tab, which amounts to hundreds of millions of dollars more than initially promised by city leaders.

Last month, the Arlington City Council unanimously approved a “Master Agreement” to ask voters to extend ...

Texas Rangers: Colby Lewis to miss two months; Rangers place Derek Holland on disabled list | SportsDay

Yup, that’s a bad day.

The Rangers’ depth in starting pitching will be put to the test after the loss of two front-line pitchers on Wednesday.
Right-hander Colby Lewis, a lead figure on the club, will not throw for four weeks because of a strained lat muscle in the right shoulder and probably will land on the 60-day disabled list. Left-hander Derek Holland went on the 15-day disabled list because of shoulder inflammation.

With right-hander Yu Darvish already on the disabled list, the Rangers ...

Velasquez “back to normal,” but will he rejoin Phillies next week? | PhillyVoice

“I feel good, everything is fine,” Velasquez said in the Double-A Reading’s clubhouse on Wednesday night. “Talking to the guys behind home plate with the radar gun, everything seems like it’s back to normal. I kind of took a peek at their speedometer and it was 97. That kind of shows I’m back to normal.”

Velasquez hopes to rejoin the Phillies rotation in five days, when the team takes their current nine-game road trip to Arizona.

But the Phils could opt for a more cautious route ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 6-23-2016

Milwaukee Journal, June 23, 1916:

[Ban Johnson] is of the opinion that managers are carrying things so far in their constant shifting of pitchers they are not only injuring their pitchers, but are reducing the interest felt by the steady patrons in the players, and consequently in the game itself.

President Johnson declared: “They are making a joke out of the pitchers by taking them out of the game if a couple of hits are made in succession, or by removing a pitcher who is going along finely to ...

Jon Gray pulled for “arm fatigue” as Rockies look toward tough stretch – The Denver Post

“It’s been that way for a couple weeks,” Gray said. “It’s just now getting to a serious point.”

Already down an ace after Tyler Chatwood wrenched his back pitching in Miami during the weekend, the Rockies return home Thursday with even more concern for a suddenly hobbled pitching staff. Combined with lefty Chris Rusin, who’s on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation, the Rockies could be without their three best ERAs just when the schedule gets tricky.

Tigers monitoring Michael Fulmer’s innings | MLB.com

Arbitrary cutoffs. They may as well do a bloodletting every 20 innings.

Fulmer entered Wednesday’s game averaging just under six innings a start in his first 11 big league outings. If he kept up that pace and made every turn through the rotation, he’d be on pace for just over 170 innings. He pitched 124 2/3 innings last season in the Minors.

“No one really knows what the ideal amount is,” Ausmus said. “People like to say 25 or 30 percent more than the following year, in terms of innings, but ...

Houston Astros battle back to reach .500 | astros.com

The reporting of their death looks premature.

“If you had told me we’d be .500 on this date, I would have said we should be better,” Hinch said. “I want to keep it in proper perspective.”

The Astros are 36-36, which won’t blow you away when you consider they were a consensus pick to win the American League West.

And then the wheels came off. Tuesday night was the first time they’d been .500 since they were 1-1 on April 6. They were 7-17 in April and 17-28 on May 22. At times, it looked like ...

In the Nick of time: Could a Williams promotion boost Phillies bats? | PhillyVoice

It doesn’t sound like he’s ready to me.

Would it send the right message to promote a guy within a two-week window that he was benched at Triple-A for disciplinary reasons? Probably not. Williams, who turns 23 in September, has failed to run out fly balls and helped start a beanball war within the last two weeks. General manager Matt Klentak was asked about Williams’ behavior four days ago.

“Nick is 22-years-old in Triple-A,” Klentak said. “He and J.P. (Crawford) both are among the ...

Baseball’s financial disparity issue goes beyond just team payrolls | FOX Sports

Owners pay more money for high-revenue clubs. High-revenue clubs also generate more money for low-revenue clubs in national broadcast packages. They also send money via luxury taxes and penalties for exceeding the international bonus pool. How much more help do they need to give low-revenue teams?

Low-revenue clubs, in particular, continue to express frustration that high-revenue clubs use their financial might to exploit the international market, as well as the major-league talent pool. The ...

NFLPA APPROVED FINANCIAL ADVISOR STOLE $30 MILLION FROM MARK SANCHEZ, JAKE PEAVY, AND ROY OSWALT

The Wilpons are interested!

The business was never viable, running operating losses of more than $3 million for four straight years. “To be sure,” Harmon wrote to Narayan in a May 2014 email, “our revenue sucks. You can boo, but Jose Reyes makes sense for Mets | New York Post

Reyes, at this juncture, is a marginal player with interesting upside who would be filling a marginal role on this Mets team. Given what these Mets want to accomplish, though, Reyes represents one margin worth exploring.

There are enough reasons to sign onto such an agreement and not enough to dismiss the notion. The only reason this shouldn’t occur is if Reyes, after his release, gets a better offer (like an immediate job in the big leagues) elsewhere — in which case the Mets can shrug it ...

Jake Arrieta makes history again while Cubs try to expose Cardinals - Chicago Tribune

I would think the Cubs records would be a little bare on the topic.

Though Cubs’ records are sketchy, Arrieta is in all likelihood the first on-field employee to appear partially exposed in a national magazine since former ballgirl Marla Collins, who posed in the nude for the September 1986 edition of Playboy.

Cubs players pored over that issue. There was not much else to look forward to during the summer of ‘86.

“That’s the best thing I’ve seen out of uniform all year,” broadcaster Harry ...

The Sultan of Swag: Babe Ruth as a Financial Investment | Society for American Baseball Research

Interesting stuff.

Over the course of his career, the total return earned by the Yankees on their investment in Babe Ruth was 1254 percent. Because of its volatility, the stock market returned a net gain of only 17 percent during the period. Bonds did much better at 205 percent, but still fell far short of Ruth. It turns out that Babe Ruth was indeed a wise investment for the Yankees. It would have been difficult for Jacob Ruppert to find any other investment that could have done nearly as well. ...Read More...

George Foster, the sturdy little right hander of the Boston Red Sox, won lasting fame among the pitchers in baseball [yesterday]. He shut the New York Yankees out without a hit, beating them by a score of 2 to 0.

Three momentary lapses in control was all that prevented this stocky little native of Oklahoma from joining Addie Joss and Cy Young in the ranks of the immortals in the national pastime by allowing no man to get to first base.

Giants’ Jake Peavy defrauded of millions in investment scheme, feds allege - SFGate

Throughout spring training and his terrible start to the regular season, Jake Peavy had a secret, that he might have lost more than $15 million to a financial adviser who allegedly redirected money that was supposed to go into safe investments toward a sports-ticket brokerage that eventually failed.

Mets pitcher Zack Wheeler has injury setback | MLB.com

Put the trade talks on hold.

Roughly a month shy of Zack Wheeler’s scheduled return from Tommy John surgery, the Mets have temporarily shut the right-hander down due to right elbow discomfort. Wheeler is scheduled to fly to New York for an examination on Wednesday by Mets doctors.

Wheeler, 26, had been scheduled to throw a simulated inning this week in Port St. Lucie, Fla., marking his first competitive action since he underwent surgery in March 2015. Though the Mets do not consider this latest ...
