He’s a new man!
Two years ago, Rodriguez would have been more likely to publicly stand toe-to-toe with the club. He said he has a “100%” different mindset now.
“I’ve learned my lesson,” he said. “The old (A-Rod) is gone.”

Burkett, an accomplished bowler for most of his life, is not a stranger to bowling in PBA competition, having bowled in a handful of Tour events since making his debut in 1990 in Pinole, Calif. He also competed in several regionals along the way, and most recently, he competed in PBA’s 2014 Oklahoma’s Grand Resort Summer Swing and the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling VI as part of the process to get ready for PBA50 competition.
On April 12 he will join a field of approximately 120 players ...
[PIRATES] PLAY FOR RAIN AND GAME RESOLVES ITSELF INTO BIG FARCE
In the fourth with the Cubs at bat and two out, it appeared as though the water would come down any minute. Pierce was up and Cooper immediately started to walk him by pitching high balls, so high that Gibson could barely reach them. The trick of the Pirates was visible to everybody and Manager Bresnahan flashed a code wireless to Pierce to strike at everything Cooper served no matter if it were his glove or a grounder.
James Taylor’s new Red Sox song. My wife didn’t like it but it struck a cord with me.

Why is he rated so high? Despite his hot start in AAA, he profiles as a defense-minded backup.
Hedges is ranked as the No. 23 prospect in baseball by Baseball Prospectus, No. 50 by MLB.com, and No. 74 by ESPN’s Keith Law (Insider-only). Hedges’ defensive ability wins widespread acclaim from nearly all prospect analysts. MLB.com praises his receiving, arm, and potential game-calling ability, while Law notes that framing pitches should prove to be a strength as well. Hedges wins less praise ...

President and general manager Doug Melvin announced the move hours after the team’s 5-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs. The Brewers will name Craig Counsell as Roenicke’s replacement on Monday, according to a FoxSports report.
“This has been a difficult start to the season, something that we certainly didn’t anticipate,” Melvin said in a statement. “Over roughly the last 100 games, we have not performed at the level that we should. It’s all about wins and losses, and after the first month of ...

The Mets are among five teams that have agreed to allow the use of their pitchers taken in the 2014 draft to be involved in a study that is being run in accordance with MLB and the players association, as well as the American Sports Medicine Institute. While the Mets are involved in the pilot year, those in charge of research hope to eventually expand to all minor league pitchers and each team. [...]

Friday night, Alex Rodriguez hit home run No. 660, tying Willie Mays to become No. 4 on the all-time list. Now he has his sights set on the Babe, at No. 3 with 714.
Which is quite the coincidence, since it was 100 years ago this May 6, at the Polo Grounds in Manhattan, that Babe Ruth hit his first major-league home run — against the Yankees.
Ruth, a burly young left-handed pitcher then playing for the Red Sox, was the first batter in the top of the third inning. He turned on the first pitch ...

A very good look at the impact of the luxury tax.
The more realistic approach for the players, then, is likely to be focusing their efforts on raising the luxury tax threshold. While the players could obviously simply agree to a more substantial set of predetermined increases to the threshold, they may be better off attempting to have the payroll limit established each year based on a fixed percentage of MLB’s estimated overall league revenues. This would help the players avoid seeing their ...

I’m still surprised the Mets haven’t worked to obtain a glove-first shortstop. I’m a fan of Reynolds but he seems to fit better as a utility guy.
The Mets GM made this point Thursday after another game-changing error by Flores resulted in a third straight Met loss, when he announced the call-up of Herrera to play second, with Murphy moving over to third until David Wright comes back in another week. For now, Flores, with seven errors in 22 games, remains at short, but only because Alderson wants ...

A few tidbits, including more stuff from Pedro’s new book.
The odds of two games ending in such fashion on the same day were probably far greater than anything spectators saw in the Kentucky Derby or the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight. Baseball wins again.
Earl Weaver believed the best place to start a young pitcher is long relief. I know long relievers are out of vogue but it seems to me having a young guy start his career there, especially when you want to limit innings, still is a good idea.
White Sox general manager Rick Hahn has said Rodon’s 2015 innings are scarce resource. The franchise has a tried and true program for keeping pitchers healthy and therefore isn’t going to run Rodon’s inning count up to 180. But Rodon could still move ...

Injuries suck. Luckily the Cubs didn’t have to add two more guys to their list.
“It’s a scary moment. They were both giving a lot of effort on that play,” Arrieta said. “It was a little out of their reach. One of those unfortunate things where two guys are going kind of (all) out to make a play. We’re thankful that they’re both OK.”

Cost to market A-Rod’s home run milestone? $6,000,000. Cost to make your organization look like petty, cheap jerks? Priceless.

An interesting observation from Felipe Alou, via Pedro Martinez. I wonder how this would stand up to a higher sample.
Tough luck for Hanigan. He was doing a nice job for the Red Sox.
And he adjusted to a night in which he didn’t have his best fastball. He recorded just three strikeouts, his lowest total for the season, and he threw his slider more frequently than usual. As per Brooks Baseball, he threw 18 sliders out of his 93 pitches, a 19.4 percent rate. In his first four starts, he threw just 7.7 percent sliders, according to Fangraphs.
“You’re not always going to have your best stuff,” Harvey said. “Tonight, fortunately enough, we got it done.”
