Craig Kimbrel traded to Red Sox from Padres |

Kimbrel is signed for $11 million in 2016 and $13 million in 2017, with a $13 million club option in 2018.

The Red Sox agreed to a deal to acquire closer Craig Kimbrel from the Padres on Friday night. Four prospects are headed to San Diego in return: outfielder Manuel Margot, shortstop Javier Guerra, middle infielder Carlos Asuaje, and left-hander Logan Allen.

How Did Previous Andrelton Simmons Age?

So, yes, history suggests that Andrelton Simmons is going to get worse defensively in Anaheim, and we shouldn’t expect him to continue putting up +20 UZRs for much longer. But that history also suggests that the same trends that take some value from his glove should add some back to his bat, and that overall, Simmons should be expected to remain roughly as valuable as he has been to this point in his career. And that’s pretty darn valuable.

The mystery of 600 abandoned Chris Denorfia bobbleheads

Free agent outfielder Chris Denorfia, most recently of the Cubs, previously spent four-plus seasons as a member of the Fightin’ Padres of San Diego. During his Padres tenure, Denoria was, according to inviolable custom, rendered in the timeless medium of the bobblehead. That’s standard enough fare thus far, but this, people, is where the script gets flipped. From NBC-7 San Diego ...

Several roommates were miffed when 600 bobbleheads bearing the face of a former Padres player mysteriously ...

Matt Wieters Accepts Qualifying Offer

Orioles catcher Matt Wieters will accept the one-year, $15.8MM qualifying offer, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports (via Twitter).

Wieters accepting the offer comes as a surprise on multiple fronts. He’s the clear top catcher on this year’s free-agent market despite coming off an injury-riddled season. Wieters is also represented by Scott Boras, who has routinely spoken out against the flaws in the QO system and has a reputation for encouraging his players to test the open market.

Say what you want about the Braves, but they are not afraid | Mark Bradley blog

Earlier speculation held that the Braves were talking with the Padres — yes, them again — about Simmons, and the Mets admitted they’d had similar discussions but the Braves had asked for Matt Harvey or Jacob deGrom in return. (Good for the Braves, I say.) And I know a lot of you are upset that they’ve traded Simmons anywhere, but here’s where I say …

I love their audacity.

I’ve gotten to know John Coppolella, who’s the architect of this grand redesign, a little, and this I can ...

DSPN: MLB Has a Big Money Problem

What the union would need is a guaranteed revenue split put into the next CBA, like the one so fought over in the last NBA lockout (it’s currently settled somewhere around 50/50, a big win for the owners from the previous deal). But what works in other sports isn’t an option in the sui generis economy of baseball. The only way to make absolutely sure MLB owners share a certain percentage of revenues with players would be to install a salary floor, and require them to spend a certain amount ...

A Mariners bullpen that sported the sixth-worst ERA in the Major Leagues last season received a major boost on Thursday, when veteran right-hander Joaquin Benoit was acquired from the Padres for a pair of low-level Minor Leaguers.

In exchange, new general manager Jerry Dipoto parted ways with starter Enyel De Los Santos and infielder Nelson Ward.

One day at Little Rock, where the Detroit team was playing an exhibition, old Red Donahue, who in his day was the sharpest-tongued man in baseball, was tossing them over and letting the Little Rock batters hit at will, to the great delight of the spectators.

“Oh, Red, you’re easy, easy, easy,” shrieked one very wild fan who was getting on Red’s nerves.

“I’m not half as easy as you are,” retorted Red. “You paid 50 cents to see me do it.”

Marlins Feud With Agent Scott Boras Over Ozuna, Fernandez - The New York Times

Shocking!! Click through to the article to read more.

An exchange of barbs began with Boras criticizing the Marlins for demoting Ozuna to Triple-A last season when he was in a 1-for-36 slump. The comments brought an angry response from Samson.

“My strong suggestion to Mr. Boras is that instead of resting on his 5 percent that he collects from his stable of players, he write a check and buy a team,” Samson said. “Then he would have the opportunity to run a team that he claims to be so able to ...

Notes from the GM meetings: Rizzo, Zobrist, Span, etc. - The Washington Post

How many teams don’t have interest in Zobrist? If he’s not a top priority for a team, a writer is just filling space.

The Nationals have interest in free agent veteran utility man Ben Zobrist, according to people familiar with the situation. Zobrist isn’t believed to a top priority but the Nationals have long been interested in the versatile player. Zobrist, 34, could still command a formidable multi-year deal despite his age.

Red Sox need an ace, but will they sign a free agent over 30? - The Boston Globe

The short-term boost isn’t worth the long-term headaches of a megabuck 30 plus starting pitcher. Of course, having patience got their last GM replaced.

Red Sox principal owner John Henry told Bloomberg Businessweek magazine in 2014 that he was opposed to the idea of signing players over the age of 30 to long-term contracts. He cited a study showing that many such deals prove to be mistakes.

That comment, a bit innocuous at the time, has come to define Henry’s approach to free agency, ...

Yankees planning to make serious run at Wei-Yin Chen: source - NY Daily News

According to a source, the Yankees could make a serious run at Chen, who has pitched for the Orioles the past four seasons. The 30-year-old is 46-32 with a 3.72 ERA since coming to the majors, including an 11-8 record and 3.34 ERA in 31 starts last season.

“A lot of teams are going to be in on him,” the source said. “But the Yankees are going to be one of them.”

School of Roch: Catching up on the catching situation

Saltalamacchia is a switch-hitter with a career .240/.311/.419 slash line in nine seasons. He’s below-average behind the plate, but he did hit 25 home runs with the Red Sox in 2012 and the team signing him would pay only the league minimum. The Marlins are on the hook, so to speak, for the rest of the $8 million he’s owed next season.

It would simply be a depth signing. If not him, someone else. It won’t be presented as a major acquisition. It’s not evidence that Duquette is ignoring more ...

The Braves are listening to some clubs that have shown interest in Andrelton Simmons, but this does not mean they are actively shopping the young shortstop, who is widely considered one of the game’s top defensive assets.

Cuban players to watch this Hot Stove season |

An estimated 100 players have left Cuba in search of a Major League contract in the past 12 months.

How many of those players will sign with a big league club is up for debate. What’s certain is that the once powerful Serie Nacional, the island’s top league, has been depleted by the defections from its top players over the past few years. Not surprisingly, many of the recent players to leave Cuba are much younger than their predecessors, so they are subject to international signing guidelines ...
