Nationals Park to host 2018 All-Star game

After a nearly 50-year absence, the MLB All-Star game is set to return to the nation’s capital.

Big news. There hasn’t been an MLB All-Star Game in Washington since the Senators hosted it at RFK Stadium in 1969.

This is also a promise made good by Commissioner Rob Manfred. In the coming years, Manfred is hoping to move toward a Super Bowl-type bidding process to determine which city and franchise hosts the All-Star game, but promised the event would come to Washington and Miami first. The ...

C.J. Wilson calls Angels statement on Josh Hamilton ‘kind of disheartening’

In fact, according to Pedro Moura of the Orange County Register, many of Hamilton’s teammates were left speechless yet undeniably affected when the statement played over the TV in the Angel Stadium weight room. Speechless, with the exception of C.J. Wilson, who has a friendship with Hamilton dating back to their time with the Texas Rangers.

When prompted for a response to Dipoto’s statement, Wilson didn’t have to say much to say a lot.

Wilson called it “kind of disheartening,” before ...

Alex Rodriguez gets a ‘warm hand’ from Yankees fans in first at-bat

Given the circumstances surrounding his situation, there was considerable intrigue over how the home crowd would react to seeing the 39-year-old back in pinstripes.

After being announced in the stadium, Rodriguez received a “warm hand,” according to announcer Michael Kay. Some fans even stood up and applauded as A-Rod stepped to the plate.

It’s worth noting that Rodriguez came out to Jay Z’s “Public Service Announcement.” The song begins with the line “allow me to reintroduce myself,” so it ...

Was Ty Cobb the White Oscar Charleston?

Charleston also annoyed Londos by shouting “WHAT?” whenever he tried to talk.

His players called him Charlie, and when it was his turn to drive the team’s red, white, and blue bus, it was like having Ty Cobb at the wheel. Of course the players never said so, because sportswriters and white folks were always calling him the black Ty Cobb and Charlie hated it…

John McGraw [proclaimed]: “If Oscar Charleston isn’t the greatest baseball player in the world, then I’m no judge of baseball ...

Deadspin: “An Absolute #### Show”: Tales From The Wrigley Field Bathroom Lines

You’d think Cubs fans would be experts at holding on.

There were, according to USA Today, only two working bathrooms in the whole of the main concourse—that’s the sort of disaster that leads to fans peeing into plastic cups. We asked readers who were at the game to tell us what it like; below are their emails.

...

I was at the game last night and can verify that peeing in cups/corners was happening all over the concourse. I waited almost an hour when I tried after the 2nd inning. It was ...

Padres Keep Building and Borrowing, Add Craig Kimbrel | FanGraphs Baseball

Jeff Sullivan breaks down the deal.

The Braves are shedding just over $80 million in guaranteed future salary. The Padres, meanwhile, are shedding about $24 million in guaranteed future salary, meaning, in the end, the Braves save about $56 million, and the Padres add that much. Kimbrel has both potential performance-based bonuses and a club option, but we’ll stick with the guarantee for now. Here’s the simplification of this deal: the Padres are trading one of their top prospects, and a ...

Does Uncle Charlie really believe the Rays will be better offensively?

The same brainy and creative 20-man baseball operations staff now run by Matt Silverman, who merely changed seats after a decade working alongside Friedman, and backed by the same cutting-edge computer system — still named Uncle Charlie — packed with proprietary data and research that is at the core of much of their decision-making.

OTP - April 2015: Church, baseball, politics: Rahm and Chuy work to close the deal

When the last weekend of a race for mayor coincides in Chicago with Easter and Opening Day at Wrigley Field, the candidates know where to go to close the deal.

Edit: Stop the personal insults in the political threads. I’ve gotten many complaints about numerous posters, especially about Rickey! is just here so he don’t get fined. If the insults don’t stop, the OTP will go on hiatus and accounts will be suspended. FYI, Jim.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 4-6-2015

Tacoma Times, April 6, 1915:

H. E. Westgate of [Los Angeles] has applied for a patent on an automatic umpire he has invented that records strikes and balls, returns the ball to the pitcher, and presents a right or left hand dummy batter by a simple twist of the wrist. The device has been tested by league pitchers and they declare it is accurate to the fraction of an inch.

Cool idea. The patent application can be found here.

Baseball is struggling to hook kids — and risks losing fans to other sports

Baseball, for decades now the national pastime only through the nostalgic lens of history, is a thriving business. Revenue is at an all-time high. Attendance in the 30 major league parks and in minor leagues around the country is strong. Baseball players on average make half again as much money as football players. But since he took office this year, Manfred has been sounding a startling warning bell: The sport must address its flagging connection to young people or risk losing a generation of ...

NY Daily News: Madden: Healthy David Wright and pitching depth will lead the Mets to NL East crown

As for the offense, obviously I’m banking on Lucas Duda, Juan Lagares and Travis d’Arnaud all building on their 2014 seasons and David Wright, his shoulder fully healed, regaining his 20-homer/100 RBI form — and possibly even Curtis Granderson benefiting from the pulled-in fences in right-center and the reunion with his favorite batting coach, Kevin Long, to have a year more befitting his $13 million salary. I don’t think any of that is a reach. At the same time, the Nationals have a ...

Lost of good stuff in Cafardo’s notes columns. This tidbit is a little silly.

And Swihart might not be the catcher long term.

There are whispers about changing his position because he’s so athletic.

Whispers by who? Why would the Red Sox move Swihart?

Matt Harvey is back for the Mets ... And better than before | NJ.com

Better.

According to the Mets’ internal numbers, the spin rate on those two pitches was higher this spring than it was in 2013 - and more consistently so too. Spin rate measures the revolutions a baseball makes on its way to the plate. The higher the spin rate for breaking balls, the harder they are to differentiate from a fastball and to make solid contact with.

“Everything is better,” Warthen said.

The New Yorker: Ways to Stay Sane in Baseball

This offseason, a few ball clubs announced new initiatives to support their players’ mental health. The Red Sox created a new department of behavioral health, headed by Richard Ginsburg, the co-director of the PACES Institute of Sports Psychology, at Massachusetts General Hospital. The Washington Nationals began spring training with a new position known as “life skills” coördinator. The former player Rick Ankiel was hired for the job, and will work specifically with the club’s ...

MLB preview: Flyover country is no longer irrelevant in baseball | TribLIVE

In the modern game, since 1961, there never has been a longer expansion drought. Baseball has not added a new team since admitting the Diamondbacks and Rays in 1998.

Last October, was the first full-season World Series without a 90-win team. Bookmakers peg only the Nationals and Dodgers to win 90-plus games this season. Manuel believes the lack of expansion has increased parity. Why?

“Pitching has had a chance to catch up,” he said.

Run scoring declined in baseball for an eighth ...

How Giants should properly reward Sabean, Bochy | CSN Bay Area

So what to do then for the men who have won everything? Consider this their SkyMall moment.

• BALLPARK STATUES: This is pretty de rigueur stuff these days at new ballparks, so Sabean sitting in a ballpark seat or Bochy standing at a dugout railing is a little boring for the modern conceptual artist. Thus, we suggest two massive bronze pieces.

One would be a gigantic fliptop cellphone with a crank on the side to commemorate Sabean’s Vietnam War-era mobile (the crank is there to power it, ...
