Too much good stuff: Ken Rosenthal empties his All-Star notebook | FOX Sports

Notes, notes, and more notes.

A.J. Burnett. Asked him why he is wearing Batman cleats for the All-Star Game, and Burnett joked, “You don’t know what I do when I sleep.” He continued, “Pittsburgh is my Gotham. They accept me as that guy.” Burnett isn’t kidding—on the day he turned down his $12.75 million player option with the Phillies, he called Pirates GM Neal Huntington to say that he wanted to play his final season in Pittsburgh, and nowhere else. Huntington said it was “almost awkward”—he ...

Take me out to the brain game

“The doctors x-rayed my head and found nothing.”
-Yogi Berra

When the two researchers hopped on a conference call with Bradley’s coaches in early November to discuss their findings, they finally got a sense of the scope of the concept they were developing, and what it could mean for baseball. The coaches immediately requested the results of one player who seemed to struggle at the plate, despite obvious athleticism and a picturesque swing. Muraskin patiently explained the metrics he had ...

From fringe prospect to All-Star starter: Dallas Keuchel - Minor League Ball

John Sickels’ take.

If you look at Keuchel’s career going back to college there is a clear pattern: when he reaches a new level, he often struggles initially but makes some adjustments and ends up performing very well in the end. It happened in college; it happened when he reached Double-A; it happened when he reached Triple-A, and it happened in the majors.

Keuchel’s adaptability and intelligence maximize his physical tools, a key advantage in the Darwinian environment of professional ...

Rob Manfred sees expansion in MLB’s future

It’s tough to extort money from communities if you don’t have viable cities as options.

Montreal, Charlotte, North Carolina, San Antonio, Portland, Oregon, Las Vegas, Oklahoma City, northern New Jersey, Mexico City or Monterrey, Mexico, are among the markets that could eventually land on baseball’s radar as potential locations for new or relocated franchises.

Perfect compromise for solving the Pete Rose controversy | New York Post

That’s the problem. If he’s the same guy he was 25 years ago, he doesn’t deserve a second chance.

“If [Commissioner Rob Manfred] is a fair man, if he’s going to give someone a second chance, I’ll be the happiest guy in the world,” Rose told Fox’s Ken Rosenthal on Tuesday. “But I understand he’s got a tough job. But I’m a good guy. I’m not the same guy that I was 25 years ago.”

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-15-2015

Milwaukee Sentinel, July 15, 1915:

A tornado struck the grandstand at the Decatur [Illinois] ball park on Wednesday just as the Decatur and Rockford players were lining up to play.

The entire roof of the grandstand was torn off and a portion of it fell upon the crowd below. A number of people were badly bruised, but there were no serious injuries.

Players on the Decatur and Rockford clubs rushed to the rescue of the people buried under the wreckage. The damage is estimated to be in the ...

12 News (Phoenix): Piestewa family: Adding name to highway in bad taste

I have no problem with the temporary co-naming of the highway but IMHO not contacting the family beforehand was a pretty big misstep.

The family of Lori Piestewa said they were never contacted about a plan to place former Diamondback pitcher Randy Johnson’s name alongside Piestewa’s on the Piestewa Freeway.

Piestewa was killed in a firefight in Iraq in 2003. Private Jessica Lynch was kidnapped during that same firefight and was later rescued from captivity.

The Arizona Diamondbacks and Gov. ...

Nelson Cruz: David Ortiz Tried To Recruit Me To Red Sox Again During Offseason | Boston Red Sox | NESN.com

David Ortiz apparently tried his darndest this past offseason to recruit Nelson Cruz to join the Boston Red Sox.

And no, this isn’t a reprint of a story from last July. Speaking with reporters before Tuesday’s Major League Baseball All-Star Game in Cincinnati, Cruz detailed how, for a second winter in a row, Ortiz made a push to bring him to Boston. “Yes, he did. It’s huge,” the Seattle Mariners slugger said, via WEEI.com. “I mean, he doesn’t make the calls. I guess they listen ...

MLB’s new golden age of 25-and-under All-Stars

But wait, we’ve got even more evidence that this is the deepest group of young hitters in a generation: You’ll find 14 hitters age 25 or younger with at least 200 plate appearances and an Adjusted OPS+ of 125 or better. We’ve seen only two seasons since 1900, according to baseball-reference.com, when that many position players 25 and under finished the year with an OPS+ that far above league average (minimum 400 plate appearances). One was 1969, when men such as Johnny Bench, Rod Carew and ...

Barnwell: MLB Needs a Player Loan System

The pitch:

imagine a variation on the loan process in which an out-of-contention team could send a useful veteran away to a club in the thick of a playoff race while receiving a prospect in return permanently. The team in last place would get a young player for the future and its veteran back for what one would hope to be a more promising season in 2016. The playoff team would be able to fill a short-term hole without having to give up the same sort of prospect haul it would normally consider in ...

Cafardo: Isn’t it time to forgive Pete Rose and put him in Hall of Fame?

Rose has had a tough time convincing the powers that be that the 26-year sentence is enough. There are hard-liners who believe Rose committed the most mortal sin of all, and that redemption should never come.

The high-horsers won’t relent. Deep down, Rose can’t possibly think anything’s going to change. That the mind-boggling 4,256 hits he got in major league baseball will never make him a Hall of Famer.

Shouldn’t the BBWAA, or the Veterans Committee, have the opportunity to decide ...

What Should Determine Home-Field Advantage for the World Series? – The Hardball Times

With this attitude fans might as well take a break from the sport during the All Star Break.

Pat Neshek, who took the loss in the 2014 All-Star Game, shares the notion that, to many players, winning isn’t the primary focus. “You’re there to enjoy the week,” said Neshek. “Everybody is having fun, and baseball is the last thing you’re worried about.”

For Andy MacPhail, a game-changing version of money ball

No. No. No. No. No. Aaron Nola is the kind of player the Phillies should be holding onto right now. While I don’t think he’ll be an ace, he can be a nice starter in the middle of a rotation when the team is ready to contend again.

How much is Aaron Nola worth as a trade chip? Is there an Anthony Rizzo out there to be acquired in exchange for a team that desires an Andrew Cashner?

2015 Futures Game Notebook: Nick Williams Figures It Out - BaseballAmerica.com

It’s OK not to swing at pitches out of the strike zone. It’s not OK letting perfectly good pitches over the plate go by to wait for the perfect pitch.

Athletics first baseman Matt Olson heard it all the time growing up. He’s big, he’s strong and he hits the ball a long way, so why not expand the zone to drive in more runs.

But drawing walks always has been part of what Olson does. It’s part of his approach and one he’s not changing. For his career, Olson has a .127 isolated on-base ...

Injuries to Bundy and Harvey hurt Orioles in more ways than one | Baseball Essential

How many teams can afford to see all their young starting pitching prospects not pan out?

The Orioles are a team that cannot afford to see their young starting pitching prospects shrivel up in the minor leagues. This is a team one or two bad years away from beginning the vicious cycle of rushing pitchers to the Majors or being stuck with retreads like Bruce Chen and Kevin Millwood. Offense was never the problem as the losses piled up from 1998 to 2012. It was always pitching, especially the ...

Lawsuit Seeks Better Protection for Fans From Foul Balls and Broken Bats - The New York Times

“Section 211 in the second deck”? If you can’t pay attention enough or can’t move fast enough to get out of the way, either sit further back or don’t go at all.

The lead plaintiff, Gail Payne, is an Oakland A’s fan who feels vulnerable because her seats in Section 211 in the second deck at O.co Coliseum are not protected by netting. A fan beside her was injured by a foul ball, her lawyer said.

No one in Red Sox history deserves the benefit of the doubt more than David Ortiz - Red Sox - Boston.com

One of the dopes pushing this baloney was Tony Massarotti who, along with Michael Felger, hosts the dumbest talk radio show in the Boston market. The pairing groups together two of the least insightful people ever to hit the airwaves.

The conjecture is that Ortiz begged out of the game and started his All-Star break early because he didn’t want to play first base. Yep. That’s it. I know, that sentence looks even stupider in print than it sounds on the radio, but there you go. This is the ...

“It took a while for me to get over trying to strike everybody out,” Burnett said. “I still like my strikeouts, but use that two-seamer, man; let them beat it into the ground. My ground balls are back to where they used to be. That’s all it is, executing pitches. I haven’t found no fountain of youth. I haven’t done anything different. I’m just trying to keep the ball down and doing a better job of it.”
