Dodgers pitcher complains about heat at Rangers’ park; is lack of roof a problem?

Dodgers pitcher Brett Anderson doesn’t like the Texas heat.

“No clue why you would ever want to pitch for the Rangers,” he tweeted on Wednesday. “The climate is beyond awful.” …

The lack of a retractable roof at Globe Life Park is the one big issue that could force the Rangers to seek out a new home, whether in Arlington or elsewhere.

The Dallas Morning News spins the pitcher’s comment toward the factor that may make the Arlington ballpark “obsolete” after just 20 years: no AC.

Oddly ...

My favorite ballplayer of the 1910s is back in the news! Pittsburgh Press, June 18, 1915:

When “Tubby” Spencer left Philadelphia, it was thought that he was through as a catcher. Spencer was at one time considered the most promising catcher in the country. He was the son of a Scranton millionaire, and traveled the pace that ruins all athletes.

Spencer was a brilliant chap, and he saw the error of his ways and gave up the bright lights. The big, good natured catcher is now treasurer of the ...

Padres’ Wil Myers to undergo left wrist surgery, expected to miss eight weeks | UTSanDiego.com

Thursday in Arizona, Myers will have a bone spur in his left wrist trimmed. The Padres hope he can resume baseball activities in six weeks, but eight weeks might be more realistic. By then, it will be mid-August, Myers will need a significant amount of rehab games and sitting out whatever remains of the season could be the wiser course of action.

Cardinals owner on investigation: ‘These are serious allegations’

“I don’t know the outcome of this or where it’s going to go,” he said, “but our hope is that when everything comes to light, people will realize that it wasn’t something that was organizationalwide. It shouldn’t be something that takes away from any of the success this organization has had.”

PLAYING THE RIGHT WAY?

The most overused, overwrought cliché in baseball? Play the game the right way. What does that even mean, though? The answer to that question must take into account three important factors: When, Who, and Where.

This article describes how cultural differences affect how “playing the right way” is perceived. Baker tells us about his experience in the Dominican Winter League and how different their etiquette was there. Even though this is an article completely about baseball it really goes ...

Orange is the new blast: O’s hit club-record 8 HRs

That’s a lot of homers.

The Orioles set a new franchise record by hitting eight home runs in Tuesday night’s 19-3 victory over the Phillies. Six different Baltimore players clubbed homers as the Orioles became the first team to hit eight or more home runs in a game since the Red Sox did so against Detroit on Sept. 4, 2013.

Pittsburgh Press, June 17, 1915:

While the Brooklyn outfield is showing signs of a revival in hitting, Uncle Wilbert Robinson still thinks it would be well to have another outer gardener. With that end in view he is negotiating for a young fellow in the Texas league…Robbie will not give the kid’s name, but says he is the proper sort of person, being full of pep and action. The best evidence of his forceful character was furnished year before last when he offered to whip the Giants individually ...

FBI probe of Cardinals makes it fair to question series with Dodgers - LA Times

So, he doesn’t know what he’s talking about in two sports.

Just call them the New England Cardinals … or maybe the St. Louis Patriots … or maybe just call them phonies in the wake of a New York Times report that they are being investigated by the FBI for hacking computer networks and stealing information about the Houston Astros.

Deadspin: The hottest possible take on the Cardinals hacking the Astros

This take is somewhat hotter than the core of the Sun.

There is, of course, only one course of action that baseball can take in the wake of this hilarious, impossibly joyful development: CONTRACT THE CARDINALS. That’s right. Destroy them. Raze their stadium. Arrest their players and fans. Intern them all in some kind of horrible Bud Light Mixx Tail tent (with a dress code), where they can wander around in a daze, whispering to each other, “They said it could never happen here, but it ...

ESPN: Stephen Vogt brings his fun-loving personality to the ballpark every day

Great feature on the Oakland Athletics’ biggest fan favorite in recent years.

“[Eric] Byrnes was more of an athletic, running-down-the-line-hard, playing-with-his-hair-on-fire type of guy,” said Oakland manager Bob Melvin. “Stephen probably doesn’t have the pace to play with his hair on fire, but he’s a ditch digger. He doesn’t use batting gloves. He has pine tar all over him and he’s dirty from the time he goes out there. His teammates feed off how hard he plays and how hard he works—and how ...

NY Times: St. Louis Cardinals Investigated by F.B.I. for Hacking Astros

WASHINGTON — The F.B.I. and Justice Department prosecutors are investigating front-office officials for the St. Louis Cardinals, one of the most successful teams in baseball over the past two decades, for hacking into the internal networks of a rival team to steal closely guarded information about player personnel.

Investigators have uncovered evidence that Cardinals officials broke into a network of the Houston Astros that housed special databases the team had built, according to law ...

How far would you go to improve your favorite team?

Would you kill for a Bryce Harper?

Oliveros’s actions bring up an important question: How far would you, as a fan, be comfortable with your team going to improve itself? To stay them in contention? At the risk of being melodramatic, how much of your soul is a couple of extra wins worth?

Me? I don’t demand that ballplayers be good people. I’ve long ago had the hero-worship beaten out of me by Kirby Puckett and Chuck Knoblauch. But there are lines in the sand that I will not cross. One of ...

Two video replays were botched in the Dbacks-Angels game last night | HardballTalk

I’m really tired of replay. It slows the game down. Managers often ask for looks when the result isn’t very close. At the same time replay officials often get the calls wrong.
