Lowballing Lester haunts Sox | Boston Herald

Somebody didn’t get the memo about the White Sox before writing this piece. Chris Sale isn’t going anywhere.

If the Red Sox wind up with one from Column A — Cole Hamels or Max Scherzer or especially Chris Sale — and one or two from Column B — James Shields, Justin Masterson, Rick Porcello, Ian Kennedy, Yovani Gallardo — then the howls that the Sox seemed to be bracing for in anticipation that Lester will choose the Cubs or Giants instead of them will fade quickly to silence.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-9-2014

Washington Herald, December 9, 1914:

White Sox Pay $50,000 for Eddie Collins

In his pocket [Charles Comiskey] bears a bill of sale for Eddie Collins, star second baseman of the Athletics, and he has left behind $50,000 in real money.
...
Comiskey has contracted to pay Collins $10,000 a year for five years, and it is reported that this is so much more than Mack actually was paying him…that Collins is tickled to death to think he is going to the White Sox.

According to the salary data at BB-Ref, ...

The Veterans Committee can’t seem to get it right. | SportsonEarth.com : Brian Kenny

There wasn’t one single bad call on this ballot. I might not be as big on Tony Oliva (batting average driven) or Gil Hodges (aura driven), but the Hall would not be diminished by any one of those great players getting inducted. Dick Allen and Minnie Minoso are both locks for me, and I’m easily swayed by any decent pitch for Jim Kaat or Ken Boyer. A deeper look at Billy Pierce reveals a great pitching career in a hitter’s era. Luis Tiant was both great and legendary. Bob Howsam built the Big Red ...

Once Lester picks team, rest of desired arms will fall into place | FOX Sports

Robothal reports.

Free agents frequently say such things, talking about comfort, happiness, etc. But Lester has similar offers from the Cubs, Giants, Dodgers and Red Sox, according to major-league sources. The question, in the end, will boil down to which team he prefers.
Lester’s offers all are in the six-year, $150 million range, sources said. One team — it is known which one — indicated it would go to the seven-year, $175 million range. But Lester would not necessarily choose that team ...

Ten quick hits from Cleveland Indians GM Chris Antonetti on Brandon Moss, etc | cleveland.com

7. Fans wanted the Indians to add a right-handed hitter, but Moss bats left-handed. Antonetti loves left-handed hitters because he feels they better fit Progressive Field’s dimensions.

The power stats over the last three years offer convincing evidence of those beliefs.

“Also, 70 percent of the pitching (in the big leagues) is right-handed,” said Antonetti. “The thing we continually focus on is how we score more runs and prevent runs. That’s the equation we’re focused on.

“We felt Brandon ...

White Sox To Sign David Robertson

The White Sox have agreed to sign David Robertson to a four-year deal worth more than $40MM, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today (via Twitter).  Robertson has been zeroed in on landing a four-year deal this winter and he found a team happy to give him one with a solid average annual value.

Robertson may not have landed the ~$50MM Jonathan Papelbon-type deal that he was said to be looking for, but he did out earn fellow free agent Andrew Miller, who will be pitching late in games for his ...

Baseball America: Cuban Outfielder Dian Toscano Agrees To Sign With Braves

Playing for Villa Clara in Serie Nacional, Toscano batted .356/.400/.452 in 86 plate appearances with eight walks and eight strikeouts in 2012-13, his last season in Cuba. The year before, Toscano hit .287/.438/.380 with 35 walks and 16 strikeouts. He hit just three home runs that year and never showed much power in Cuba, though he’s in significantly better shape and has increased his strength since leaving Cuba.

He was a left fielder for Villa Clara, and he’s expected to stay there in pro ...

As for trading Colon, Alderson added: “We like Bartolo. We like him for the money he’s signed this season. Frankly, we’re not looking to trade him.”

Minor League Salaries Challenged in New Antitrust Lawsuit

But exempted monopolistic trusts are the best kind of monopolistic trusts!

The Miranda suit alleges that MLB unlawfully suppresses minor league players’ salaries in a variety of ways. By subjecting North American amateur players to the first-year player draft each June, Major League Baseball prevents draftees from selling their services to the highest bidder — instead forcing them to negotiate with only a single team. MLB then artificially reduces the size of the signing bonuses that entry ...

Mayor Rick Kriseman and the Tampa Bay Rays have reached an agreement to let the team search for new stadium sites in Hillsborough County in exchange for payments to the city if the team leaves before its contract at Tropicana Field expires in 2027.

Kriseman wants to the City Council to discuss the agreement at its meeting on Thursday.

Kang has consistently put up huge numbers in Korea and posted an amazing .364/.457/.733 slash line in 2014 for the Nexen Heores, hitting 39 home runs in 116 games. The big question is how those numbers translate, which is why he could be viewed as a bargain by some.

How Scott Boras’ demands cloud market for Max Scherzer | New York Post

If pitcher arms are really like autos, I’m assuming Boras will offer Scherzer along with a 1000 innings pitched warranty.

Boras has told me once the trade market fully clarifies, Scherzer will be pursued robustly based on the comparative lack of wear and tear on the righty’s special arm. So it is near certain Scherzer will not sign during the Winter Meetings.

The Phillies have told the Mets and some other teams that Rollins isn’t willing to waive his no-trade clause at this time, scuttling any chance for a trade involving the Mets and those other teams. It isn’t known whether Rollins might change his mind, but that is apparently his current stance.
