Rays name 8 manager candidates, including Raul Ibanez

Joe Maddon skipped town to sign with the Cubs on a five-year, $25 million contract, so the Rays need to find a new manager. They’re going to initially try to select one from a list of eight candidates, but according to earlier reports, they are going to check out at least 12 potential managers before making a decision.

Those initial eight candidates, courtesy of the Tampa Bay Times’ Marc Topkin:

   Dave Martinez
   Charlie Montoyo

   Ron Wotus

Two Unrecognized Hall of Fame Shortstops

In the next part of this article, we’ll walk through the latest DRA estimate, showing Derek Jeter made approximately 450 fewer successful fielding plays that an average-fielding shortstop playing in his place would have fielded and converted into outs. Jeter played 2,674 defensive games at short. A player playing nearly every game per season, say, 150 games, plays 6 games a week, so Jeter played close to 450 “weeks” at short.

The easiest way, then, to put Derek Jeter’s defense into ...

red sox - Addition by subtraction: Time to trade Clay Buchholz is now - WEEI | Chris Villani

I get that Buchholz isn’t reliable. Right now, the Sox only have unreliable starters. I don’t see how getting rid of the only one with *any* track record of being a quality starter improves their situation.

JOE MADDON—AND MAYBE, FINALLY, THE CUBS—HAVE ARRIVED

This doesn’t sound that crazy. I’ve heard about other teams having something similar. I expect it’s a value system where a GM can quickly call up a number with the current estimated value for every player in baseball.

(Perhaps a little buried in all of the Maddon love over the past few days was that there appeared to be some sort of Dr. Frankenstein experiment going on in Tampa right before he departed.

“I think you need to balance it between the human being and the number,” Maddon said. ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 11-6-2014

New York Evening World, November 6, 1914:

Another problem confronts the owners of the Yankees. Arrangements have not yet been made with the Giants for the use of the Polo Grounds next year, and inasmuch as the club’s new grounds at Kingsbridge have not yet been completed, President Farrell is likely to be up against it for a ball park in 1915.

The Yankees’ new grounds weren’t completed until 1923. The new ballpark was in the Bronx, but it wasn’t in Kingsbridge.

Alfonso Soriano retires from baseball

And, therefore, is not available.

Alfonso Soriano announced his retirement from baseball in a radio interview with Hector Gomez of Z101 in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday.

The 38-year-old spent 16 seasons with the New York Yankees, Texas Rangers, Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs, hitting .270/.319/.500 with 412 home runs in more than 8,000 plate appearances. The Dominican native finished his career where it started—in the Bronx—and struggled through his worst offensive season since 2000 ...

Cubs’ Edwards works on offerings in Fall ball | cubs.com

Will Edwards really be more than a back-ender of a rotation?

The Cubs’ best hope for a front-line starter from their farm system is right-hander C.J. Edwards, whose prospect status has surged dramatically since the Rangers signed him as a 48th-round Draft pick from a South Carolina high school in 2011. Edwards came to Chicago in the Matt Garza trade during a 2013 season in which he led the Minors by averaging 12 strikeouts per nine innings.

Sources: A’s adamant about keeping Donaldson, will listen on pitchers | FOX Sports

Here’s another team “not shopping” but “willing to listen”. (Wink, wink.)

First things first: The Oakland Athletics do not plan to trade third baseman Josh Donaldson, according to major-league sources.
The A’s would listen if teams inquired on pitchers such as right-hander Jeff Samardzija and lefty Scott Kazmir. However, they will not shop either and are adamant about keeping Donaldson, who is under club control for four more years, sources say.

Hank Conger’s suspect framing numbers - Beyond the Box Score

Tangotiger’s Fan Scouting Report gives him below average numbers for his defense. Are the Astros overestimating Conger’s defense? I haven’t watched Conger closely enough to form an opinion. What do our Angels fans think?

The moderately-misleading quote rings true, as does most everything on FanGraphs. So how does it apply to Conger? Well, in his two most recent seasons — the ones in which, you’ll recall, he framed phenomenally — he racked up a combined…1172.1 innings. That’s barely a full ...

Cubs looking again at Cole Hamels, plus top free-agent pitchers - CBSSports.com

Brad Halsey dies in climbing accident

Former major league pitcher Brad Halsey has died in a recreational climbing accident. He was 33.

In 2004, Halsey dueled Boston ace Pedro Martinez into the middle innings in a game highlighted by Derek Jeter’s diving catch into the stands at Yankee Stadium.  In 2006, Halsey gave up Barry Bonds’ 714th home run, tying Babe Ruth for second place on the career list.

At least he doesn’t believe that Martians are stealing his luggage!

Let me say that again: statistical analysis (that we in the public are aware of) takes the most important element of the sport, and ignores it.

It’s like having Newtonian physics without relativity and quantum mechanics. There’s a lot you can do with Newtonian physics, but at the extremes, it begins to break down, because it is ignoring some deeper, more fundamental truths.

Rob Parker: MLB’s New Trend, Leaving Out Black Managers

BBC might have been on board with Parker’s rant ... until he wondered aloud about Ausmus.

The Maddon hire isn’t the problem. He’s a veteran skipper who has had success. It’s the Molitor hiring that should make aspiring black and Hispanic managers feeling salty.

While a great player, Molitor doesn’t have any managerial experience - not in the minors or majors.

That’s a new trend in MLB, hiring guys who have never managed before. Some have never even been a coach on the minor league ...

Fielding Bible and Gold Gloves | Joe Blogs

Joe Posnanski’s ballot.

I also know why Fielding Bible voters are averse to Jones — his defensive numbers are annually mediocre. The Dewan plus/minus system, which tries to measure how many plays a player makes against the league average, calculates that every single year since 2009 Jones has made FEWER plays than the average outfielder. His other defensive numbers are not very exciting either.

When you add in his arm and Good Plays Made, Jones is actually a little above-average in ...
