Baseball Goes On Trial for Millions of Fans, Billions of Dollars

if you are in bed with cable companies you really need to think about what you find attractive in your partner

from the article:

MLB says the system prevents the teams in big markets from gobbling up all the TV deals and starving small-market teams, ensuring more games, more competition and more choices for fans.

Now, the league will have to defend that logic in a trial starting Tuesday in federal court in Manhattan, in which Comcast Corp. and DirecTV LLC are also among the defendants. The ...

Injured players aim for impact in returns | MLB.com

Yu Darvish, Rangers
In a crowded AL West, Darvish has the ability to shift the scales considerably when he returns from Tommy John surgery. The latest guess is that the defending division champs will get him back in May, making for a fearsome twosome of Darvish and Cole Hamels atop Texas’ rotation. Hamstrung by some other colossal contracts they’ve doled out in recent years, the Rangers haven’t made much noise this offseason. But they know Darvish, who has a 3.27 ERA and 128 ERA+ over 83 career ...

Mark Appel hopes to break out with Phillies | MLB.com

He’s too nice? He lets batters hit to improve their averages?

That hasn’t stopped the armchair psychologists from offering their conclusions. Appel has a ready smile and is bright and well-spoken. That has led some to conclude that he’s simply too nice, that he lacks the requisite mean streak. It’s a charge the 24-year-old is well aware of.

“I take it as a compliment. I am a nice guy,” Appel said on the final day of the Phillies’ annual Prospect Education Program at Citizens Bank Park. “I don’t ...

Yoenis Cespedes still available but Astros not likely destination - Ultimate Astros

Where will Cespedes land?

General manager Jeff Luhnow on Friday afternoon reiterated that he feels the team does not need to make further moves this offseason. Yet, it’s clear the Astros don’t consider their winter over.

“We’re still in the same spot we’ve been in,” Luhnow said. “We’re monitoring the players that are available and trying to figure out if there’s a fit, and when I say available, I don’t mean only via free agency. There’s discussions with other teams about ...

The State of Analytics Within MLB | FanGraphs Baseball

For teams building departments, the duties of analytics can remain highly conflated and ambiguous. Speaking in generalities, there are three fields within sabermetrics, which have some overlap with one another:

— Data Scientists: Those who manage and manipulate data for the purpose of divining relationships, seeking evidence, and optimizing behavior. Pitch sequencing studies, defensive positioning strategies, and catcher/pitcher stolen base credit allocation are some examples of projects ...

Japan Times: Aoki eyes big impact on return to American League

It’s always good to have goals.

Outfielder Norichika Aoki said Sunday he wants to return to the American League with a bang this year.

“I want to win an individual title this year, either a batting or stolen base crown,” the 34-year-old Aoki said after training in Tokyo.

Justin Upton, Detroit Tigers agree to six-year deal

Detroit Tigers owner Mike Ilitch, who craves star players and refuses to let money stand in the way of being a World Series contender, agreed to terms with free-agent outfielder Justin Upton on a six-year contract Monday night, a person directly involved with the negotiations told USA TODAY Sports.

The person spoke only on the condition of anonymity since the deal won’t become official until Upton passes his physical.

The Tigers, who informed everyone the past six weeks that they no longer ...

Rangers-to-Dallas talk just more hot air

By nearly all accounts, Globe Life Park — née The Ballpark in Arlington — has aged both masterfully and gracefully since its opening 22 years ago.

A sturdy red brick facade. Great sightlines. Nachos by the barrel. Two World Series appearances.

The Texas Rangers have a handsome, still-viable home.

But when a good city loses one of its sports teams, as St. Louis did this past week, it only makes sense to check the fine print on your team’s stadium lease.

April 2024 — that’s when ...

‘God Bless Baseball’ brings the sport that unites us to the stage

If you haven’t guessed by now, Okada’s play is not particularly straightforward. Possible Ichiro arrives to teach baseball to three people who don’t know anything about the sport. Because this is not the movie “Summer Catch,” there’s another layer here— baseball serves as the metaphor for Japan and South Korea’s relationship with the U.S.
To answer your first question, no, there are no bat flips. But abstract movement rules the play, turning the things we see on the diamond into balletic ...

Cards seek more power from Moss, Adams : Sports

Who doesn’t want to be more streamlined?

A more streamlined Adams, though, won’t necessarily be an Adams getting more infield hits, especially against infield shifts. “I can probably tell you I’m not going to try bunting,” he said, laughing.

“I got one down out of six tries and the other five went into the visiting dugout,” Adams said. “So I’m going to scratch that, I think.”

When someone remarked about the leaner look, Adams referenced the jacket he was wearing. “I found ...

Jays must show commitment to free agents-to-be: Griffin | Toronto Star

Will the Blue Jays sign both Bautista or Encarnacion? I don’t see it.

When he was still in charge, Anthopoulos indicated he would be interested in extending key players like Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion. He had an obsessive desire to win, as he showed in dealing 13 prospects last summer for a chance to win the 2015 World Series. Ownership hasn’t shown the same will.

Free agency will be a big issue. The eight pending free agents at the end of 2016 include Bautista, Encarnacion, Michael ...

DeWitt gives views of hacking episode : Sports

Those concerned about the potential precedent the Cardinals’ hacking of the Houston Astros established received Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr.’s answer during a wide-ranging interview at Winter Warm-Up on Sunday.

He used the phrases “outlier”, “rogue element” and “one-off situation” when referring to the federal investigation that stems from former Cardinals scouting director Chris Correa, who earlier this month pleaded guilty to five counts of illegal entry into a protected database ...

Guilty plea just the beginning in Astros hacking case - Houston Chronicle

Federal judges have recommended - but not mandatory - sentencing guidelines to follow on a points system. The amount of loss greatly increases the number of points - and therefore, likely prison time.

To Toren, that may explain how the plea agreement came together.

“They don’t want to include the full amount of damages or loss,” he said. “Since he pleaded guilty, the only way he may have pled guilty, they don’t want to have to send him to jail for 50 years. Because that is a lot of loss.

Royals sign Ian Kennedy to five-year, $70 million contract

How can teams compete with big money clubs like the Royals?

Kennedy is a 31-year old right-handed pitcher who has won 75 games in parts of nine Major Leagues seasons with the Yankees, Diamondbacks, and Padres. He was 9-15 with a 4.28 ERA and 4.51 FIP with 0.8 fWAR last season, but was a ...

red sox - Dustin Pedroia has no use for defensive metrics, or another season like last one - WEEI | Rob Bradford

Some good points by Pedroia. Of course, the defensive numbers aren’t perfect. Despite this quote, if you read the rest of the article, it’s clear he knows there is some truth in the numbers.

To be honest with you, I don’t read into defensive metric stuff because that’s not what I believe in defensively,” he said. “If you’re in the middle of the field, you have to know what pitch is going to try and be executed and it’s my job to try and position myself. If the hitter stays inside the ball, and ...

The Physics of Broken-Bat Homers – The Hardball Times

Good stuff.

The ball doesn’t even know or really care that it broke the bat. It behaves just as if the bat didn’t break and flies off without a care in the world. However, a ball directly responsible for breaking the bat near the handle slinks off as if it has a guilty conscience.

So, next time you see a broken bat result in a weak dribbler, check out the replay. It will most likely show the batter hit an inside pitch near the handle. On the other hand, if you’re lucky enough to see a ...

A Modest Proposal: Making Second Base Optional

Instead, we should make second base optional. Let runners make the decision for themselves after reaching first. They can travel the 90 feet from first base to second base, or they can live a little, take a chance for once in their lives, and go straight across. The distance from first base to third base is 127 feet. That’s an additional 37 feet — or, if you prefer percentages, 141% of the regular 90-foot distance between bases. Also, there’s the pitcher’s mound to negotiate, a lump of ...
