All 12 free agents who were given the $15.3 million offers last week chose not to accept by Monday’s 5 p.m. EST deadline.

The Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year Awards were announced on Monday, with White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu the unanimous selection in the American League and Mets right-hander Jacob deGrom taking home the honor in the NL.
Apparently Cuddyer wasn’t too nuts about Colorado… and is confident he’ll be awful in 2015!
The Mets announced that they have signed free agent outfielder Michael Cuddyer to a two-year contract.
Cuddyer, a client of Excel Sports Management’s Casey Close, was the surprise recipient of a qualifying offer last week that caused many to believe that he would be the first to accept the offer. However, Colorado’s decision to extend the QO appears to have been a wise one, as they’ll now net a ...

For the misdemeanor player, chased and cheated by pursuit
And we gazed upon the Chimelis of freedom flashing.
But I have reached the point where I feel I am stalling. My ambivalent, wait-till-next-year approach to Piazza is the coward’s way out.
Unlike the more tarnished superstars (Barry Bonds, Clemens, etc.), Piazza is close. He pulled 62.2 percent last year, up from 57.8 percent in his first year, 2012.
That was higher than Bagwell, whose credentials are less obvious to some voters ...

More than 17,000 people have played Major League Baseball. Countless others have contributed to the game from working in front offices to writing about baseball and more. It’s hard to say who matters most, players or everyone else and it’s an age-old debate. Personally, I believe both groups are important. Few people can play at the highest level. And without a range of support, they wouldn’t do so professionally, at least not in a league that generates close to $10 billion annually. ...
Rick Hahn isn’t number two in Chicago.
I love Tulowitzki. With his contract, though, he’s a tough pickup for any GM. GMs get fired for being wrong on trades like this.
Tulowitzki, in particular, creates difficulty. He is homegrown. He is the most popular player in Rockies history. When right, he is arguably among the five best position players in the game. But here is how many games he has started at shortstop in the past five years: 122, 140, 47, 119 and 88. Those are 516 starts in his age 25-to-29 seasons, barely more than 100 a ...
Rosenthal says Puig is safe.
Sources have informed FOX Sports MLB Insider Ken Rosenthal that new Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman and the L.A. brain trust are aggressively trying to move an outfielder, and that nearly all are in play.
I realize there is pressure from Werner and Lucchino to placate the fans with a big free agent signing this off-season. I also agree that Sandoval would be a nice fit in the Red Sox lineup. (His ability to go the other way from the left side will play well in Fenway.) I’m not convinced, however, that he will age well. So, if they have to make a splash, I’d rather they spend the money on Lester.

Here’s a potential buy-low pickup.
Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik is expected to try to gauge trade interest in outfielder Michael Saunders over the next few days.
Saunders, who turns 28 later this month, is a left-handed hitter who doesn’t appear to fit with the club’s future plans. Even so, club officials believe Saunders has value; nothing suggests they are looking to just dump him.
One possibility is Toronto, which is looking for someone capable of playing left and/or center ...

Pittsburgh Gazette Times, November 10, 1914:
Danny Green, at one time a star outfielder on the Chicago National and American League baseball teams, died [yesterday] in an institution in Camden, N.J. While playing with the Minneapolis team of the American Association several years ago, Green was struck on the head by a pitched ball and never recovered from the effects of the injury.
Green was 38 years old.
I’d never heard this story before. Anyone have any other details? This is a fairly ...Read More...
The Dodgers are shopping their expensive outfielders.
As Friedman, Byrnes and Zaidi gathered in Arizona over the weekend to set an offseason agenda and prepare for this week’s GM meetings in Phoenix, they might be coming to the realization that they’ve traded one set of financial handcuffs for another – perhaps velvet-lined but restrictive nonetheless.

According to multiple sources, they spoke to the Blue Jays about first baseman Adam Lind and were unable to agree on a return before he was traded to the Brewers last weekend for pitcher Marco Estrada.
The Jays wanted first baseman/outfielder Steve Pearce, according to sources, but the Orioles weren’t willing to part with him.
Lind became expendable after the Jays claimed first baseman Justin Smoak off waivers from the Mariners. They also have Edwin Encarnacion to play first and rotate at ...
“Pitching three complete games in a World Series is, you know, is sort of a great feat,” Lolich said.
So what will it take to get Hamels?
Industry sources say the Phils are looking for at least three top prospects, two that can play right now and another that isn’t far away. The Cubs and Red Sox are two known suitors and both have the farm systems to get a deal done — if they are willing to meet the Phillies’ rightfully high asking price. Amaro and interim club president Pat Gillick must play the Cubs and Red Sox (and maybe even the Dodgers) against each other as they try to maximize ...

In September, toward the end of the season, Abreu declined to discuss his defection, telling the Tribune in Spanish: “I think it’s best not to talk on that subject. Someday, God willing, if we’re in the position to, I’ll be able to talk about that with all my heart.”
But he spoke without hesitation that living in the U.S. was worth the journey, however frightening it might have been.
“For me, it’s the fact we’re free. That we’re free in everything,” he said. “In Cuba, people don’t ...
