BP Boston: OLDE SOX: THE UNIQUENESS OF WADE BOGGS

Boggs worked to make himself a decent third baseman. Decent. His Gold Gloves were a gift, however. Pedroia has consistently been a great fielder. Their defensive skills are not similar.

But Pedroia has hit for almost exactly the same overall power as Boggs, at least when it comes to a career slugging percentage. Boggs posted a .443 slugging over his tenure, while Pedroia checks in at .444, despite hitting dingers at a far higher rate than Wade ever did. And Pedroia plays stellar defense at a ...

Asche optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley | phillies.com

Can’t have him take time away from Sizemore or Francoeur.

He was surprised once again Monday. Not with the fact they wanted him to play left field, but that they wanted him to learn in the Minor Leagues, where he has not played since 2013.
“I’m surprised, but I understand,” Asche said.

Party on: Wrigley Field bleachers reopen, not much has changed - Chicago Tribune

Get in line lemmings.

There are still some kinks that need to be worked out, like the non-operating elevator at the center-field entrance. And while the concourses are huge, the new exits in the middle of the left-field bleachers are so narrow only one person can fit through at a time, meaning fans will have to smush together or wait until the entrance is open.

“That’s a design flaw someone should’ve noticed,” Schwerin said.

Bridich challenges Rockies to play better | rockies.com

Remember the Blake Street Bombers?

“We have a good collection of players,” said Bridich, the first-year GM whose team is 11-17 and last in the National League West. “And at this point, meaning the last two weeks of the season, they’ve added up to a bad team. I don’t think there’s any other way you can look at it. That’s not saying anything shocking. The players know that.

“There are bad stretches that befall every team in a season, or most every team in a season. This is where we see what type ...

Snopes.com:  Wally Pipp’s Career-Ending ‘Headache’

In the case of Wally Pipp there was no inopportune headache, no “delightful and romantic story” — just a case of a slumping player who lost his job to an up-and-comer and never got it back. But his replacement was the stuff of legend (the indestructible ballplayer finally felled by a fatal disease), and so he became part of a legend that mixed fact and fiction and grew so large even some of the participants came to believe in its fictional aspects.

I don’t know nearly as much baseball history ...

Marlins making change in closer role | marlins.com

Maybe last season’s success gave him a big head.

“Shrek [Cishek] has done a tremendous job for us, but at the end of the day, it’s about winning games,” Redmond said.

A year ago, Cishek converted 39 of 43 chances. The sidearm-throwing right-hander has already blown as many as he did last season.

“It’s tough to win in the big leagues, and when you get late leads, you’ve got to be able to lock them down,” Redmond said. “Against a team like the Dodgers, they have so many weapons, great pitching. ...

The nightmare is happening: The New York Yankees are a very good team - SweetSpot - ESPN

David likes them, he really likes them.

That’s right. I’m going to say it, and I rewrote this sentence 49 times because it’s hard to admit: This team is likable, fun to watch and giving us a story much more interesting than an aging, broken-down team on its way to 85 or 90 losses.

It starts with Rodriguez, the onetime golden child—so long ago, of course—turned pariah seeking his moment of redemption. I don’t know if he’ll get that; he remains, after all, the most disliked player in the game. ...

MLB pumps up ball security after Tom Brady flap | Boston Herald

I bet Clayton Kershaw would like to provide all the game balls.

“If you’re playing on turf and a guy hits a screaming one-hopper to the shortstop, it’s going to have a huge scuff on it. Certain pitchers can create an advantage with that, so that’s why they throw those baseballs out,” Wilson said.

The Remarkably Unclutch Oakland A’s | FanGraphs Baseball

If things don’t turn around in the next month, Beane will start selling off, which will mean the talent will match the record.

No team is diverging from their BaseRuns expectations at anything near the rate that the A’s are. Instead of being 12-21, BaseRuns actually expects that the A’s would be 18-15 at this point, a .539 expected winning percentage that would have them as the 11th best team in baseball. No other team in baseball is underperforming their BaseRuns record by more than three ...

Barry Bonds working on lawsuit accusing MLB teams of collusion - CBSSports.com

No, this isn’t from The Onion.

All-time home run king Barry Bonds is working on a lawsuit against MLB regarding his claim of collusion by teams that prevented him from obtaining a playing job following the 2007 season, people with knowledge of the case said.

Bonds has long contended that a collusion of MLB owners effectively ended his career following the ‘07 season, when he set the career home run record.

Why Texas Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor is headed to the minor leagues | | Dallas Morning News

I can see how this could be a problem.

Odor has seen 399 pitches this year, according to Brooksbaseball.net, 254 of them are outside the zone. He’s put swings on 90 of those pitches. Most troublesome is that he’s missed on 36 of those swings, a rate of 40 percent.

It’s one thing to be a bad ball hitter or a free swinger. But if you are going to do that, you have to make more contact. Both his swing rate on pitches outside the zone and his swing-and-miss rate on pitches on pitches outside ...

ESPN: Schoenfield: The Yankees Are Back

The gritty, gutsy, scrappy underdogs are attracting some attention:

After hammering the Rays 11-5 on Monday in a five-homer outburst that included Rodriguez’s eighth, the Yankees are 21-12 and owners of the best record in the American League. Maybe you dreamed of an under .500 season; maybe you dreamed of Rodriguez getting released in July, the Yankees finally just eating his contract; maybe you dreamed of Joe Girardi losing his cool one evening and going on a Hal McRae-like rant in his postgame ...

2. Yankees: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mariano Rivera (see below)

Baseball Prospectus | Some Projection Left: 2015 MLB Mock Draft 1.0

BP’s first mock draft.

1. Arizona Diamondbacks – Garrett Whitley, OF, Niskayuna HS (N.Y.): The Diamondbacks haven’t come close to finalizing this decision, as I’ve been told they’re debating names like Dansby Swanson, Dillon Tate, and even Tyler Stephenson. Right now I believe the choice is Whitley though—for a number substantially lower than the $8.6 million dollars the slot comes with, and with three potential 60 tools, it’s not as massive a reach as some might believe.

2. Houston ...

The Red Sox have been brutal the last two weeks. The starting pitching as been bad; the offense has been non-existent. Many of my friends and coworkers think the season is over. So do a bunch of writers. Deep breaths, lonnnnnnng deeeeeeep breaths. The Red Sox have some issues but things will get better. All is not lost.
