Red Sox scrap David Ortiz bobblehead night | Boston Herald

Good decision.

The Red Sox scrapped a planned giveaway of 15,000
David Ortiz bobblehead dolls last night because the toys appeared racially insensitive, team President Sam Kennedy said.

The bobbleheads depicted Big Papi speaking at Fenway Park in 2013 following the Boston Marathon bombings, when he declared Boston “our (expletive) city.”

But something went wrong in production.

“I personally felt that they were offensive given the portrayal in terms of his facial features,” Kennedy ...

Steven Wright hurt shoulder pinch running, replaced by Clay Buchholz | Boston Herald

So I go on Twitter and see a comment about injuries being avoidable for pinch-running pitchers. I reply with, “That’s what I was thinking when the Red Sox had Steven Wright pinch-run recently.” Then I scroll down and find out that Steven Wright actually got hurt during his pinch-running appearance.

Maybe I should stay off Twitter.

Mets have ‘open mind’ on Carlos Gomez, year after trade drama | New York Post

This doesn’t sound like the Mets are looking to pick up Gomez.

With the price tag far lower than last season — Gomez is making $9 million this season, but can be signed for the league minimum if he clears waivers — would the Mets consider adding his right-handed bat to the struggling lineup?

“We always have an open mind,” Mets general manager Sandy Alderson told The Post.

Terry Francona Sits Out Game

During Francona’s daily pregame meeting with reporters, the manager stopped momentarily and complained of chest pain. Francona felt well enough to finish the question-and-answer session, but then retreated to the clubhouse, where he was examined by medical staff on hand at Nationals Park.

Francona, 57, remained at the ballpark after being checked out. The Indians’ media relations staff noted that the manager was feeling better by first pitch, but had experienced some dizziness and ...

Continuing neck problems ending Prince Fielder’s career, sources say; Rangers will still owe DH $44 million

Three sources close to the situation confirmed Tuesday that Fielder’s career is over after a decade in the majors due to a pair of disk herniations in his neck. An official announcement will be made Wednesday afternoon in Arlington where, presumably, Fielder, still in a neck brace from his second spinal fusion surgery in the last 27 months, will address the decision.

Fielder, 32, will be declared “medically disabled,” as doctors will not clear him to return to baseball over the perilous risk ...

Bismarck Daily Tribune, August 10, 1916:

Anyone having any information as to the whereabouts, kindly advise the sporting editor of the Tribune as they are needed for the game with Mandan next Sunday.

Tommy La Stella wants to play for only the Chicago Cubs

Read the whole article. It’s majors or bust. If I were the team, I’d leave him home where he’s comfortable.

The Cubs placed infielder Tommy La Stella on the inactive list Tuesday as he contemplates retirement if he can’t play for the big league team.

In fact, La Stella, who was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on July 29, said the Cubs are the only team he wants to play for as his priorities have changed over the last year.

“I’m a baseball player by profession. My identity is not tied up in that,” La ...

Grant:Knowledge from Pedro Martinez, via Carlos Beltran, could make Yu Darvish even more devastating

Pedro helps Darvish via Beltran.

The two just happened upon one another in the cafeteria of the visiting clubhouse in Houston on Saturday. Some 20 minutes later, Darvish emerged with a fresh perspective about how he wanted to attack hitters.

In short, Darvish decided he could attack hitters, especially inside, with his fastball instead of having to throw inside.

“He’s got so much experience,” Darvish said Monday. “We talked about the mental side. I feel like my mind is the weakest part of my ...

Forbes: Maury Brown: Disney Buys $1B Stake In MLB BAM Tech, To Launch ESPN Streaming Service

More evidence that MLB is awash in dough:

Walt Disney announced Tuesday afternoon that it is taking a minority stake in MLB Advanced Media’s spin-off media company, BAMTech. Disney is making a $1 billion investment in two payments—now and in January 2017—that will give it a 33% interest in the media company, with an option to become the majority stakeholder in the future.

Disney said that BamTech will collaborate with ESPN to launch a “multi-sport” subscription streaming service, ...

Tommy La Stella has failed to report to Triple-A for 11 days

Des Moines is lovely this time of year.

Tommy La Stella was demoted to Triple-A by the Cubs on July 29. It was a roster crunch situation and La Stella has options left so, despite the fact that he has been an effective player this year, it made sense to send him down. Sorry, baseball is not a pure meritocracy. Sometimes the politics of contracts, options and service time play into such decisions.

At the time, Joe Maddon mentioned to the media that La Stella didn’t take the demotion well. ...

Maricopa County rejects most of Arizona Diamondbacks’ requested $65M for Chase Field upgrades

County officials in recent weeks have rejected most of the team’s request for $65 million in upgrades to Chase Field, saying the repairs don’t meet the lease agreement’s requirements for funding. Requested repairs include suite renovations, painting and a new scoreboard, all of which county officials say are cosmetic and the team’s responsibility.

Documents also show the conflict has gotten personal.

County Supervisor Andy Kunasek sent a letter to Diamondbacks President Derrick Hall as the ...

Former NFL QB Tim Tebow to pursue a career in professional baseball

At 29, he’s getting a late start. He’s got an uphill climb but I made fun of a guy in my sim league for drafting Matt Bush in our amateur draft this year, so I will hold off on making fun of Tebow on this one.

Former NFL quarterback and current ESPN broadcaster Tim Tebow is actively pursuing a career in professional baseball and plans to hold a workout for Major League Baseball teams later this month, according to his agents Jimmy Sexton and Nick Khan.

For almost the past year, Tebow has been ...

Mets make two waiver claims — one for a reliever - NY Daily News

Not satisfied with their moves before Monday’s non-waiver trade deadline, the Mets are at least trying to be active in the waiver-trade market. One industry source told the Daily News that since Tuesday, the Mets have made two waiver claims, one for a reliever, but have not been able to complete the deals.

They have also put names out on the waiver wire last week to see if they can stir up a possible trade, The News has learned. Those names include catcher Travis d’Arnaud and infielder ...

Diamondbacks Try To Squeeze More Money From Taxpayers; County Supervisor Tells Team To Screw Themselves

38 Pitches His Hat Into the Ring

The three-time World Series-winning pitcher recently revealed some pretty serious political plans in perhaps the most casual manner possible — in the comment section of one of his own Facebook posts complaining about the Democratic Party.

“I am going to run, soon,” Schilling wrote back.

When asked for details, Schilling replied, “state office first, white house in 8 years :)”

And then he added: “or if by some amazing illegal event this country elects another clinton.”

OTP 2016 August 8: Arlington could generate more tax dollars without new Rangers stadium

{A recent study] hints at an even smaller tax impact than what has been widely promoted.

The report from HR&A Advisors notes—without specifics—that some of the tax money would be used to pay off stadium debt. Also, the $2 million annual rent would help pay off the debt and eventually go toward stadium improvements when the bonds were retired. None of the Rangers rent would end up in the city’s general fund.

With those adjustments, the amount of Rangers-generated tax dollars helping pay for ...

MLB Rookie Report: Joe Musgrove, RHP, Houston Astros - Minor League Ball

His initial MLB innings confirm the minor league scouting reports: fastball between 88 and 95 MPH, averaging around 92; curveballs, sliders, and change-ups ranging from the upper-70s to mid-80s, plus excellent command and control that helps everything play up. There’s nothing left for him to prove in the minors and he is ready for a full trial.

Given his history and some funk in his delivery, I’m not certain that he’ll be durable long-term, but you can say that about most young pitchers. Aside ...
