Orioles don’t use Zach Britton against Toronto |

So he wastes him in the pen instead of pushing him for two innings? That makes no sense at all.

Britton warmed up three times: in the eighth, ninth and 10th innings. But he never got the call, prompting extensive criticism.
“There’s a lot of different ways to look at it, so that’s the way we went,” he said. “It didn’t work out.”

DMR: Mother of Johnston Little League player dies from cancer

Very sad news out of Iowa…

Jen Garcia first made headlines during the August series when her on-camera interview with ESPN’s Jaymee Sire was interrupted as her son, JT, hit a home run. She and some other parents traveled to South Williamsport, Penn., to watch the boys on Johnston’s Midwest champion Little League team play.

Sire was mid-sentence, asking a question about the bracelets the boys wear in Garcia’s honor, when JT’s metal bat connected with the ball — ping! The ball sailed over the ...

Don Mattingly couldn’t take Barry Bonds anymore | New York Post

I guess Mattingly didn’t like him.

The 52-year-old Bonds publicly said he wanted to return in August, but apparently the Marlins didn’t want him back. SiriusXM’s Craig Mish reported that Bonds’ “commitment level dwindled” during the summer, and manager Don Mattingly called him out for the lack of effort.

According to The Post’s Kevin Kernan, who spoke with an MLB coach, Mattingly would have gone so far as to step down as manager if Bonds returned for another season.

Hall of Fame ‘Eras Committee’ to vote on these 10 names for 2017

This week, the Baseball Hall of Fame announced 10 names that will be considered for induction in 2017. For this round, the Eras Committee is tasked with considering the Hall merits of Bud Selig, George Steinbrenner, John Schuerholz, Davey Johnson, Lou Piniella, Harold Baines, Mark McGwire, Albert Belle, Orel Hershiser, and Will Clark.

I can see Selig, Schuerholz and maybe Von Steingrabber making it.  I doubt any of the players will

Idiots Argue Modern Ballplayers Are Fat In Stupid USA Today Op-Ed

The op-ed makes two main points. The first is that in the last 25 years there has been a drastic change in the body composition of baseball players—70 percent of today’s players are overweight and 10 percent are obese, according to the authors—and the second is that, for the sake of both their own health and that of the greater public to which they are role models, baseball players have a duty to lose weight.

The first point is scientific hogwash; the second is disingenuous ...

The Art of Letting Go: Bat Flips in Korea

As Major League Baseball struggles to overcome its staid image and lure younger fans—according to Nielsen, most of the sport’s TV viewers are over 50—the simple bat flip has come to symbolize the culture war being waged within its ranks. It’s a conflict between those who believe the game should embrace the traditions of other countries and flashier elements of other sports, and those who, as Bautista wrote in The Players’ Tribune, are “old-school, my-way-or-the-highway type of people who never ...

A’s wish list: turnaround for Sonny Gray; adding outfielders - San Francisco Chronicle

Valencia has some talent. If the A’s get rid of him, it’s tough not to believe he’s a world-class jerk.

The offense in general is an issue after the A’s finished last in runs and on-base percentage. “Let’s be frank, we have a lot of ground to make up,” Beane said.

The A’s have numerous roster questions to iron out before Nov. 18, when they must finalize their 40-man roster to protect minor-leaguers from the Rule-5 draft, and the non-tender deadline in early December. Outfielder Danny ...

Baseball Stadium Workers Not Owed Overtime

A baseball stadium concessions operator in Maryland is exempt from paying overtime, a federal appeals court ruled ( Hill v. Del. N. Cos. Sportservice, Inc. , 2d Cir., No. 15-2109, 10/3/16 ).

Texas Rangers: Why investments in the right people—not just analytics or scouting—is key to Rangers’ success | SportsDay

Of course, the Royals talked about the same thing the last few years. Did the Royals have less quality “people” this season?

You can’t grade people on a 20-80 scale and you can’t distill them down to just a spin rate or an exit velocity. There is no metric. It’s the sixth tool, impossible to quantify, but idiotic to ignore. If the Rangers have an identity, this is it. They pride themselves on investing in people. And their second consecutive AL West title sparkles with those investments.

Dave Stewart ‘relieved’ to be fired by Diamondbacks: ‘I’ve got better things to do’ | MLB | Sporting News

I don’t have anything bad to say about Ken Kendrick,’’ Stewart said. “I’m not mad at this guy. He’s different. I’m different. Really, we were oil and water.

He added: “When I left Toronto, I was angry. I’m not angry this time. It’s just different. Almost a relief. I just got to figure out what to do next, but really, I’ll be just fine.’’

Walt Weiss out as Colorado Rockies manager

Wait, Walt Weiss was the Rockies manager?

The Rockies termed Weiss’ departure as a “resignation,” although his three-year contract expired after this season.

Weiss, 52, had a 283-365 record in four seasons as Colorado manager. The Rockies actually outperformed some expectations in 2016, posting a 75-87 record and finishing a surprising third in the National League West.

The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad 100-RBI Season

Lots of players have driven in 100 runs in a season before. Twenty-two players did so this season, Hosmer included. These players aren’t always good — RBI is more a function of who hits in front of a batter and that first player’s ability to get on base. RBI, as a counting stat, is also largely aided by the ability to stay in the lineup all season. Of course, players who (a) bat behind a talented on-base guy and (b) stay in the lineup all season — they’re usually pretty good. So ...

Diamondbacks fire GM Dave Stewart, manager Chip Hale

Fresh off a very disappointing 2016 season, the Arizona Diamondbacks have fired general manager Dave Stewart and manager Chip Hale, the club announced Monday afternoon.

Hopes were high for Arizona entering the spring of 2016. They were coming off a 79-83 season in 2015 and added ace pitcher Zack Greinke via free agency in addition to trading for 2015 All-Star pitcher Shelby Miller.

Instead, the second year with both Stewart and Hale couldn’t have been more of a disaster.

Mets Beat Yankees in Local TV Ratings for First Time Ever

SNY, cable home of the Mets, finished the regular season as baseball’s most-watched regional sports network, beating the Yankees’ YES Network, according to a statement Monday. The results mark the first time Mets games have drawn more local TV viewers than Yankees games since SNY and YES started competing against each other in 2006.

Mets games on SNY averaged 263,850 viewers, compared with about 218,000 for the Yankees on YES, according to the statement from SNY. A YES spokesman said the ...

John McGraw discusses the upcoming World Series, published in the New York World, October 3, 1916:

[Red Sox manager Bill] Carrigan will win the series on his pitchers if he wins at all. Outside of the box it is not a wonderful ball club. But American Leaguers tell me Carrigan carries the greatest pitching you could look at. I guess he does. Good pitching always results in a ball club looking better, because it makes the other team look like a slightly worn second hand piece of cheese.
