Rewind: Home is where the power is for Khris Davis | CSN Bay Area

“He’s got the most power to right field that I’ve seen,” A’s shortstop Marcus Semien said. “Wherever the pitch is, he’s trying to hit it there. He knows he can hit it out of the park anywhere, so that’s a special gift to have.” Davis, 28, came over in a February trade from Milwaukee, and while he was floundering through a rough April during his first month with his new club, hitting coach Darren Bush still credited the work ethic he was showing in the batting cage. Now that Davis has ...

Alex Rodriguez was a fantastic baseball player and we were lucky to watch him play | For The Win

A lot of people who know Alex praise him. A lot of other people who know Alex criticize him. Whose right? Both. I appreciate Alex Rodriguez as a player. I enjoyed watching him play.

First step for Sonny Gray begins with strengthening exercises

That’s not a good record.

“We don’t want to see that again,” Melvin said of the A’s setting an Oakland record by having used different starters in eight straight games. “We’re probably status quo with the rotation the next time around. Then we’ll see when Jesse comes back. We still have Mengden, Cotton, Alcantara; they may be a little big later in coming.”

Gaylord Perry statue to be unveiled at ATT park Sat.

SAN FRANCISCO—The Giants will put the finishing touches on honoring their San Francisco-era Hall of Fame quintet by unveiling a statue in right-hander Gaylord Perry’s honor before the Aug. 13 game against Baltimore, the organization announced Monday.

The bronze image of Perry, 77, will join the sculptures of Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Juan Marichal and Orlando Cepeda that are located along AT&T Park’s perimeter. Each played virtually all or a significant amount of his career with the Giants ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 8-12-2016

Pittsburgh Press, August 12, 1916:

When Charles E. Hughes, Republican candidate for President, visited the Athletics-Detroit game in Detroit, Cobb was introduced to the candidate. Ty then presented Mr. Hughes with a baseball which was among his most treasured possessions and which any fan would be glad to own. The horsehide bears the signature of Theodore Roosevelt, Christy Mathewson, Chief Bender and Ty Cobb.

As a baseball nerd, a history nerd, and a baseball history nerd, this sounds to me ...

Heyman - Inside Look At Yankees’ Sale And What May Come Next

Yankees and notes.

While there’s no evidence a deal for McCann is anywhere close at this point, McCann has indeed cleared waivers, as was reported on Today’s Knuckleball. The Yankees and Braves have had extensive talks regarding the well-liked veteran catcher who grew up in the Braves’ organization, and others have shown interest, too. The Braves do seem like the most logical possible landing spot, but the Yankees’ last known request for two young players in a deal for McCann apparently ...

Angels renew stadium talks with Anaheim after striking out in Tustin - LA Times

Win-win for taxpayers means they shouldn’t pay very much at all.

Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait said the City Council has not yet been briefed on the talks. He said he would like the city to strike a deal with the Angels.

“My preference is to find a win-win,” Tait said, “that’s a good deal for the people of Anaheim. There’s lots of room for that.”

The Seattle Mariners didn’t panic at the deadline and it’s paying off | FOX Sports

Hope is alive in Seattle!

“I’m a big fan of trying to pounce on opportunity,” Dipoto said. “We talked with a variety of clubs about acquisitions that maybe would have been more notable—I don’t want to say star quality, but more household-type names. We also talked about the possibility of moving players out who were more household names.

“In the end, the best moves we could make were holding steady. The idea of moving Miley might have looked like a sell. You could certainly take it ...

Angels’ Garrett Richards hopeful he can begin throwing Monday - The Orange County Register

A week into his increased workouts, Garrett Richards is feeling as good as ever about being able to avoid Tommy John surgery.

“I literally feel like my arm is just refreshed,” Richards said Wednesday. “Everything feels great. My shoulder feels nice and loose. I feel zero discomfort in my arm. Nothing even close to what I was feeling when I was put on the DL.”

Richards has a damaged ulnar collateral ligament, an injury that normally requires Tommy John surgery and a 12- to 18-month ...

Fivethirtyeight: Steroids Probably Aren’t Causing Baseball’s Power Surge

In addition to the dramatic rise in home runs per plate appearance, one of the hallmarks of the PED era was a jump in the average age of hitters. Instead of withering away, many older hitters remained productive into their late 30s and early 40s, in some cases putting up their best seasons toward the end of their careers. (We’re looking at you, Barry.) MLB’s average plate appearance-weighted age in 2005 was 29.3, the second-highest history behind 1945, when many young would-be players were ...

MLB Television Viewership Up Five Percent

Probably all old people though.

Overall, there’s been an increase of 121,000 viewers across the board, an increase of 5% over last season. The All-Star game might have lost a couple million, but MLB stands to have an increase locally about 10 times that amount. In an era where fewer and fewer people are even watching television and ratings for the Olympics are down 25%, seeing an increase in viewers is a plus for Major League Baseball. While the shift over viewership from national games to ...

Machado: “Eventually things will turn around” - School of Roch

I’m not ready to write off the Orioles.

Machado agreed that the Orioles (63-50) are facing their biggest challenge and a trip to San Francisco awaits them after Thursday’s game.
“Definitely, hands down, it probably is,” Machado said. “This is going to separate us, hopefully. We’re going to get stronger from this and we’re going to learn from it, too.
“I think everyone is going to get into their groove. We’re squaring balls up, which is the best part about it. It’s just not ...

Baseball Prospectus | Prospectus Feature: Nothin’ to Do With Groundball Pitchers? DRA Weighs In

So what does this tell us? Does DRA confirm or negate the previous findings suggesting that groundball pitchers are more effective at run prevention? There appear to be three conclusions:

1. In modern baseball, using the most sophisticated measure of run prevention, higher groundball rates are well correlated to fewer runs allowed. It’s not an ironclad relationship—Scherzer and Verlander don’t get a lot of grounders—but inducing groundballs is a positive attribute.

2. To James’ ...

Rays prospects and minor leagues: Cobb moves closer to majors - DRaysBay

Alex Cobb took his rehab to another level in Durham’s 5-3 loss to Pawtucket. After four appearances with Charlotte, Cobb moved up a couple levels and struggled out of the gate. RBI singles from Curt Casali and Daniel Robertson spotted him a 2-0 lead, but Pawtucket evened the score in the bottom of the first. Cobb allowed solo home runs in the second and third innings and finished with four runs allowed on eight hits in three frames with four strikeouts and no walks. Nice relief work from Eddie ...

Blunders. That’s the headline. Let’s not forget that the Astros exceeded expectations last year. Although they have played poorly, they are still on the cusp of the playoffs. They have another crop of prospects just about ready. So, although the team isn’t quite the finished product some fans and writers may have expected this year, the team is still on the right track.

“The play on the field was not what we expected,” Luhnow said, according to MLB.com. “I don’t know if anybody could have ...

How Hal Steinbrenner set Girardi up for this A-Rod fiasco | New York Post

The end is difficult for many players. ARod is getting released in a couple of days. He’s not getting released because of any animus. He’ll get one last day in Yankees Stadium. Girardi doesn’t owe him any additional playing time.

On Day 2 of the newest Yankees production, “A-Rod: You Have Got to Be Sitting Me,” Joe Girardi finally ...

D-backs’ David Peralta to have wrist surgery | dbacks.com

Pretty much a lost season for Peralta.

D-backs outfielder David Peralta will undergo season-ending surgery on his right wrist Thursday morning in Phoenix.

Peralta is currently on the disabled list for the third time this season and it is the second time he has been on it as a result of his wrist. Peralta initially injured the wrist the final week of the 2015 season, and at the time, it was thought that rest and rehab would be enough to avoid surgery.

Red Sox scrap David Ortiz bobblehead night | Boston Herald

Good decision.

The Red Sox scrapped a planned giveaway of 15,000
David Ortiz bobblehead dolls last night because the toys appeared racially insensitive, team President Sam Kennedy said.

The bobbleheads depicted Big Papi speaking at Fenway Park in 2013 following the Boston Marathon bombings, when he declared Boston “our (expletive) city.”

But something went wrong in production.

“I personally felt that they were offensive given the portrayal in terms of his facial features,” Kennedy ...
