Top 2000 Prospects for 2015

We had a thread about this guy’s weird list of 2000 prospects in 2010, then forgot about it. He’s still at it! But it seems that his most recent list was in March 2015. It remains unclear what his definition of “prospect” is. It may be all a strange joke (check out who the last name on the list is).

The 2015 list does not have as many bizarre names as the 2010 list. (Exceptions: Gage Hinsz, Tito Polo, Jiandido Tromp)
Today’s player is more likely to be named after a hunky soap opera ...

Is this the name of a Star Wars character or a professional baseball player?

Stay on target, Eric Wedge!

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is, like its subtitle says, the latest movie from the Star Wars franchise. It is, according to A’s reliever and movie critic Sean Doolittle, a worthy entry in the canon. It also gives us great character names like Jyn Erso and Baze Malbus to go alongside Lando Calrissian and Boba Fett.

You know what other rich, sprawling universe has great names? Professional baseball.

Below are 10 names. The question is simple: Does the name belong to ...

How Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria continues to outfox us all

Best regards.

Meanwhile, a clause in the contract struck between the Marlins and local government in 2009 would have forced the Marlins to share a massive 70 percent of the proceeds from a franchise sale the next year; that figure dropped all the way to 5 percent by 2014, and would amount to a fraction of that now, according to last week’s report by the Miami Herald. In essence, Loria engineered a deal that handcuffed Miami into supporting him at all costs for five years, followed by him being ...

Report: Phillies Acquire Pitcher Clay Buchholz From Red Sox

The Phillies have reportedly acquired pitcher Clay Buchholz from the Boston Red Sox, according to multiple reports. The Phillies will send a minor-league Josh Tobias to Boston, according to Jim Salisbury. Buchholz, 32, was 3-6 last season with a 5.86 ERA in just 66.0 innings of work and 10 starts, bouncing back and forth between the starting rotation and bullpen.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-20-2016

Washington Herald, December 20, 1916:

Pat Moran, Eddie Burns, Sherwood Magee, Chief Bender and other ball tossers who have been spending the off-season in Philadelphia have been watching football closely.
...
All these stars agreed that a football player who also played baseball in the spring made the best receiver of forward passes.

There is some history of crossover between baseball players and receivers.

Can you match these MLB stars to their Minor League scouting reports?

“Few middle infielders can match Moncada’s huge offensive ceiling, which earns him comparisons to Robinson Cano with more speed.”

Yeah, we’re excited.

But do you know what people were saying about your current favorite MLB stars when they were still just top prospects in MiLB? Using MLB Pipeline’s archives, we pulled quotes from the scouting reports of some of MLB’s top young talent.

Tangotiger Blog: Pre-Statcast Lab: groupings or single point estimates?

More interesting stuff is coming from Tangotiger.

So, getting back to the above image: it’s likely that the information contained in the barrels will need to get more weight than in the other zones.  In order to understand the hitter, you need to know his profile.  This is true whether you want to know about his future, or simply want to know about what you have on hand as a hitter.  Knowing the profile of the hitter is better than knowing the single end point.  The profile keeps the ...

Jimmy Rollins signs minor-league deal with Giants | Mercury News

Rollins gets a shot to finish his career in his hometown megalopolis (the A’s must have not been interested in signing him to his real hometown).

He’ll be battling Kelby Tomlinson and Ehire Adrienza for a backup infielder’s role with the Giants.

“Kelby”? “Ehire”? These are ballplayers? JIMMY, that’s a real ballplayer name.

The market for Edwin Encarnacion is getting interesting. | Sports on Earth

No.

Rockies. Signing Desmond for five years and $70 million to make the move to first base seems like a waste, but signing Encarnacion as a full-time first baseman, given his recent games played history, moving Desmond to the outfield and dealing Charlie Blackmon or Carlos Gonzalez in a trade market flooded with outfielders is kinda complicated. I’m not sure how much sense any of this makes for a franchise with a new-record payroll that ought to maybe consider throwing some cash at Nolan Arenado ...

Phillies payroll fell to 26th in MLB last season

2015: 9th highest payroll
2016: 26th highest payroll
2017: 30th?

When the Phillies agreed last week to pay $30.5 million for Odubel Herrera, it represented the largest guaranteed sum issued by the team in more than four years. Not since Cole Hamels signed for $144 million in July 2012 had the Phillies guaranteed a player more, and that feels like forever ago. The last position player to receive higher than a $30.5 million guarantee was Jimmy Rollins when he signed for $38 million in December ...

Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens are going to be Hall of Famers: Here’s what it means

If you vote for Bonds and Clemens (and it’s really hard not to), how can you not vote for everyone else who has the numbers but has been linked to steroids?

It’s happening. Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens are getting in to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. It won’t be this year, and it probably won’t be next year, either, but it’s very possible by 2019, and if not then, they will ascend the Cooperstown stage in 2020 or 2021.

New York Mets should trade for center fielder | MLB.com

Of course, the Mets could just make Lagares the starter, fill in with Granderson in tough match-ups, and dump Bruce.

Jarrod Dyson, Royals
This would be a slightly different approach, because while Dyson isn’t close to the hitter that Cain is, he’s a better fielder, and he’d also add an element of speed. He has stolen 26 or more bases in each of the past five seasons, despite never playing more than 120 games in a year. Though a lefty hitter isn’t as good a fit as a righty for New York, that’s ...

Is there any hope for baseball’s basement dwellers?

We know there’s hope for the teams that just finished in first place. But is there hope for the teams that just finished in last place?

We’ve spent the past week asking that question to people all over baseball, especially in the wake of this sport’s new labor deal. We exempted the Atlanta Braves, a team moving into a new ballpark. We also exempted the Minnesota Twins, a franchise that just installed what is essentially a whole new group at the top of its baseball operations department.

But ...

OTP: 19 December 2016: The book about baseball that explains Donald Trump’s win

If there’s anything that the political market is full of, it’s inefficiencies. And the Trump team, to its credit, understood just that. The easy story to tell about Trump is one of a billionaire bully who preyed on prejudice to push the first female president out of the White House. But there’s another story to be told, one about an underdog campaign that raised about half as much money as its opponent and managed to win anyway, in part by disregarding common campaigning strategies and ...

I’m not convinced Schilling’s career was a Hall of Fame one. If, however, you’ve voted for Schilling in the past (or have a system which says he’s a Hall of Famer) and decided not to vote for him for the dumb things he says on Twitter, you might need to have your vote (and children) taken away.

Third baseman—Joey Gallo, Round Rock (102 games), Texas (17 games): While Gallo’s struggles at the Major League level continued (one hit, 19 strikeouts in 25 at-bats), his .529 slugging percentage and .896 OPS ranked sixth in the Pacific Coast League while his 25 home runs were tied for third. It was a step in the right direction for the 23-year-old slugger, who hit .195 with a .739 OPS in 53 games for the Express in 2015, although his strikeout rate remained well over 30 percent.

Linked in Verse, on the Field, and in the Corridors of League Power: Revisiting Baseball’s Sad Lexicon

For many fans, Adams’ eight-line throwaway of a poem is all that remains of the famed trio – a shame, considering their immense impact on the game in its early years. In addition to serving as the heart, brains and fists of one history’s best teams, Tinker, Evers and Chance were major characters in a decade-long web of drama, intrigue and personalities that at one point threatened to upend Major League Baseball.

Tim Raines’s Hall of Fame Candidacy in Last of the 10th - The New York Times

This is the year.

Candidates once had 15 years to be considered by the baseball writers who controlled the ballot, after a five-year waiting period following retirement. Now, the limit is 10 years, and Raines, who is in his final year on the ballot, has steadily gained support. In his first five years on the ballot, he hovered between 22 and 48 percent of the vote, with 75 percent needed for election. Last year, he shot up from 55 to 69.8 percent, right to the doorstep of Cooperstown.

Examining why Yankees hope these young starters will be different | New York Post

OK, I have a problem. In my sim leagues I pretty much never acquire Yankees because I hate routing for Yankees players to do well, especially when they face the Red Sox. I know, it’s an issue but I just can’t help it. Nevertheless, I had to buy low on Severino this year because I’m enamored with his stuff. Whether he becomes a dependable starter or not is still up in the air but, at his floor, I see a dominate reliever.
