28. Michael Matuella, RHP, Duke

39. Jacob Nix, RHP, IMG Acadamy (Fla.)

Simon says You Can Call Me… Billy
The meat of the book is Martin’s stormy managerial career. Martin was clearly a managerial descendant of Casey Stengel, there’s a little Chuck Dressen influence there, too. At least that’s what Martin said at some point. You could make a peak argument for Martin being one of the best, if not the best managers of all time.

One if [he pitches] by land, two if by sea…
Look, everyone is excited about Pat Venditte. But we can’t be too busy to fact-check things like “the word for someone who can use both hands equally well.”
He says he didn’t consult any record books, and apparently he restricted it to players he personally saw. He also excluded Dodgers.
1B • Stan Musial
2B • Joe Morgan
SS • Ernie Banks
3B • Mike Schmidt
OF • Aaron, Mays, Robinson, Clemente
C • Johnny Bench
SP • Bob Gibson, Juan Marichal, Tom Seaver, Greg Maddux.

Recently retired Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig has hired Sandy Montag of IMG as his agent to represent him in selling the rights to a book about his life and baseball.
No matter how bland and whitewashing the end result turns out, it will never be able to match the FIFA movie.

Pittsburgh Press, June 8, 1915:
Marty Kavanaugh [sic] has a way all his own of catching thrown balls. He brings his hands together like a pair of cymbals, but as the ball stays within the peculiarity of his technic is of trifling consequence.
If I’ve learned anything at all from Eric B. and Rakim, it’s that you shouldn’t sweat the technique.
Kavanagh played first base in 1915, but most of the rest of his career at second. I hope he didn’t do the cymbal thing while he was trying to pivot on a ...Read More...
The pressure comes AFTER the draft, if the players you picked don’t produce.
“I’ve never felt pressure in this job in that regard. If you start looking at it in that regard, you start making decisions for the wrong reasons. And we’ve never done that here in the 10 years I’ve been in this position with this group.”

Bad news Chicago Cubs fans: Iowa Cubs infielder Javier Baez’s road back to the major leagues hit a snag when he suffered a non-displaced fracture in his left ring finger during Sunday’s game.
A Chicago spokesperson who confirmed the news added that the team had no timetable on how long Baez would be out and that he would be evaluated further the next couple of days. ESPN Chicago’s Jesse Rogers reported Sunday that Baez will be out 4-to-8 weeks

“The biggest problem in Puerto Rico is lack of dedication,” Posada said. “In Puerto Rico there is less of a need to play baseball. But the draft also makes it tough. You have kids here who are 16 and 17 competing against kids in the states who are already in junior college. So we just try our best to give them a good start, help them develop the tools, bodies, arms and the rest will come.”
But what about the big elephant-in-the-room question? Isn’t asking Caribbean scouts to find ...
Among other notes…
5. Rafael Soriano, RHP, free agent — New agent Alan Nero said on Friday that the Cardinals, Cubs, and Blue Jays have shown the most interest in Soriano and he would not be surprised to see the veteran reliever sign before Thursday’s workout for interested teams. Soriano dropped agent Scott Boras after growing impatient for a deal to be struck. Soriano wants to be a closer. He would have a chance to be that with the Cubs and Blue Jays.

That same search also revealed many cheap tickets, some as low as five dollars, for an upcoming Saturday night game. The Angels have not priced out fans from lower socioeconomic classes from entering the game, but they apparently do want their well-off fans to know that the club is marketing to the rich and trying to prevent their less well-off fans from intermingling.

Back to a five-man rotation with another young gun coming up in a few weeks.
Manager Terry Collins on Saturday scrapped the team’s new six-man rotation — sending Gee to the bullpen — that had been implemented to help ensure Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard won’t need shutdowns or layoffs during the season.

During the two years before the Phillies again drafted him — in the third round rather than the 20th — Worley played at Long Beach State and learned about a drawback of college athletics: self-financed health care.
While bouncing back and forth between the starting rotation and bullpen as a sophomore, he missed time with an elbow injury.
“You always go see a specialist,” Worley said. “But at least with Major League Baseball and the minors, you’re getting covered by the team. In ...
