Joe Girardi’s Yankees Exit Fits Into an Era When the Front Office Is King - The Ringer

Now, some of the olds are out again, and a manager in the mold of the Astros’ A.J. Hinch is what we’re told that teams want. Hinch, of course, was once fired himself, another reminder both that managers evolve and that some dismissals amount to no more than the baseball equivalent of “It’s not you, it’s me.”

What made Joe Girardi a success cost him his job | New York Post

Every manager has a shelf life.

This Yankees team is ready to contend for titles the next few years, and the front office wants to emulate what the World Series teams have with Houston’s A.J. Hinch and Los Angeles’ Dave Roberts. Not just smart and energetic and in control of strategy — but having a personality that bonds all the various elements of an organization as one.

Joe Torre Confirms Nationals Hurt By Blown Call In NLDS Game 5

The Nats bizarre, bewildering and sometimes-Byzantine Game 5 loss to the Chicago Cubs included more than a bit of controversy, most of it taking place during Max Scherzer’s disastrous four-run fifth inning. And the controversy concerned whether, with two outs and two strikes, Javier Baez should have been allowed to run to first on a passed-ball swinging strike three, since his bat made contact with catcher Matt Wieters.

The rule book seemed clear:

If a batter strikes at a ball and ...

Philadelphia Inquirer: Phililes’ Managerial Shortlist of Two

The Phillies, according to two reports, have trimmed their managerial search to two candidates just 27 days after they removed Pete Mackanin from the dugout. Dusty Wathan, the manager at triple-A Lehigh Valley, is one. The other is Gabe Kapler, the director of player development for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The next manager could be revealed early next week.

Joe Girardi will not return as manager as Yankees ‘decided not to bring me back’

Joe Girardi is done in the Bronx.

The Yankees decided to part ways with Girardi after ten years at the helm, GM Brian Cashman announced on Thursday.

“I want to thank Joe for his 10 years of hard work and service to this organization,” GM Brian Cashman said. “Everything this organization does is done with careful and thorough consideration, and we’ve decided to pursue alternatives for the managerial position.”

Girardi, 53, leaves the Bombers with a 910-710 managerial record since 2008.

Pittsburgh Press, October 26, 1917:

Miller J. Huggins, newly appointed manager of the New York Yankees, officially stepped into his managerial shoes today.

Huggins explained today that he leaves the Cardinals with the best of good feeling.

“I gave Branch Rickey a proposition and he failed to meet my terms. I was given to understand that I was free to dispose of my services wherever I pleased,” said Huggins, “and when the opportunity to join the Yankees came along, I was glad to accept it.” ...

Bombs Away: Astros Escape World Series Game 2 With Dramatic Extra-Innings Win | SI

What a night. In one of the craziest World Series games you’ll ever see, the Astros rallied in the ninth, took a two-run lead in the 10th, gave it up in the bottom-half of the frame, then rallied again with a George Springer two-run homer in the 11th and almost blew it again before finally finishing off the Dodgers, 7–6, in World Series Game 2. It goes down as Houston’s first-ever win in the Fall Classic, evening up the series as it moves to Minute Maid Park for the next three.

‘MLB on Fox’ and Alex Rodriguez’s Path to Redemption - The Ringer

Here Anthony Masterson, the MLB on Fox researcher whom Shah-Rais calls Human Siri, interjects. “He’s incredibly aggressive,” he says. “He’s got more swings on the first pitch than all of baseball!”

“If you look at metrics,” Rodriguez concludes, “there’s no way a guy who is hitting .579 this postseason should have two walks. If that was Papi? Or Big Hurt? They would have, what, 12 or 14 walks.”

“This is good, guys,” says Jonathan Kaplan, one of the show’s producers. ...

Dodgers, Astros play quickest World Series game since 1992, leave fans wanting more | USA Today

LOS ANGELES — Some fans spent almost as much time in traffic after they exited the 5, 110 or 101 freeways before the Game 1 of the World Series than they did watching it.

The Dodgers’ 3-1 victory over the Houston Astros at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday took 2 hours, 28 minutes, making it the quickest World Series game since 1992. Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw’s 11 strikeouts through seven innings of work in a game that featured nine hits by both clubs certainly helped speed things along.

Blue Jays Nation: Why Rogers Could Sell the Blue Jays

Buon Natale?

Why do I bring this all up? Because new Rogers CEO Joe Natale has just passed the six month mark on the job, and apparently there are rumblings that the former Telus honcho — who from the beginning was thought to maybe not be enamored with his new company’s diverse array of divisions — might be getting set to move the company’s focus back to its core assets. Or so says a report this week from Andrew Willis of the Globe’s Report on Business…..

We’re later told that ...

#CARDCORNER: 1975 TOPPS CÉSAR CEDEÑO

Cedeño played so well, displaying a rare combination of speed, range in the outfield and sheer power, that some Houston writers began to refer to the Astrodome as “César’s Palace.” Cedeño’s all-around excellence – at bat, on the bases, and in center field – evoked comparisons to another one of the game’s legends, but not Clemente. Now the talk involved Willie Mays. Such comparisons to Mays became inevitable because of the identity of Cedeño’s new manager, the venerable Leo ...

That’s a bit misleading. Anderson was a pitcher at the University of Maryland as he worked to earn his degree ...

A.J. Hinch, Dave Roberts maintain friendship but become temporary enemies - Houston Chronicle

“It will be special,” the third-year Astros manager said. “Both of us have high compete buttons. There will be no dilemma on what we want the outcomes to be. But to share this experience with someone who I believe in and have such a personal bond with is really unbelievable.”

The friendship between Hinch and Roberts dates to their tenures with San Diego. In September 2010, less than three months after he was fired as the manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks, Hinch resurfaced as the Padres’ vice ...

Cubs need to get their pitching in order or else this entire foundation could crumble | NBC Sports Chicago

“You don’t want to make a living or make a habit out of trying to solve your problems with high-priced pitching free agents,” Epstein said, “because over the long run, there’s just so much risk involved. It can really hamstring your organization.

“But we have a lot of players who have reasonable salaries who contribute an awful lot that might put us in a position to consider it going forward in the future.

Statcast of the Day: Turner’s HR helped by heat

As we noted before the game, research has shown that every 10 degrees of temperature can add approximately 3.3 feet of distance to a batted ball, and the average temperature in Los Angeles at this time of year is 77 degrees. Because the temperature at the start of the game was 26 degrees higher, it was fair to expect that a fly ball on Tuesday could possibly go seven or eight feet farther than it might have on a regular Southern California evening.

Kind of surprising how big of an effect the ...

Yuli Gurriel has found a niche with Astros | MLB.com

According to Statcast™, Gurriel sported a .320 batting average, and slugged .583 with eight home runs during the regular season against sliders, ranking him fifth among 66 hitters with at least 100 at-bats decided on the pitch. He also hit well against fastballs, combining to hit .308 and slugging .484 with seven home runs against four-seamers, two-seamers and sinkers during the regular season.
No matter the pitch, Gurriel hits the ball hard. He has always hit the ball hard.

FanRag Sports cuts more writers, emphasizes video, announces podcast partnership with LockedOn Network

Some interesting baseball writers got the axe. One interesting response is people calling for FanRag “to pay their writers”. I know BBTF isn’t really a business but…a lot of writers don’t seem to understand it’s fairly easy for a site to figure out whether the employee’s cost is greater than the revenue his content generates.

Emma Span: A Rival Scout Breaks Down the Astros Ahead of the World Series

Houston won the ALCS because they used starters in their bullpen. They didn’t use relievers. It’s not sustainable. I don’t know what they’re gonna do, I really don’t. I’m not going to be terribly shocked if Dallas Keuchel pitches three times, or Justin Verlander does … Houston has struggled on the road, obviously. They’re more comfortable in their ballpark, which is a hitter’s paradise.

On the night the season ended — a Sunday — Suzuki said he returned to his Miami Beach residence and began working out on the custom-made equipment he has set up in his home.

He returned to the ballpark on Wednesday and has continued showing up there six days a week. It would be seven if not for the fact the ballpark is closed on Sundays, with no one to let him in.

“There’s never a day where I just sit at the house and just relax and do nothing,” he said. “There’s not a day like ...
