The playoffs’ most important innings were decided in July | New York Post

Imagine a Cubs vs. Indians World Series. One fanbase enjoys the euphoria of victory; the other fanbase adds another miserable failure to its bag of despair.

The Indians last won in 1948. And, you might have heard about this one: The Cubs haven’t won since 1908, or the year the world first got the electric mixer.

If not now, when?

Padres’ Tyson Ross Out 4-6 Months Due To Shoulder Surgery

Why didn’t this happen earlier in the year?

San Diego Padres right-handed pitcher Tyson Ross is scheduled to undergo surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome on Thursday. The injury is expected to keep him out anywhere from 4-6 months, which leaves open the possibility that he could potentially return early in the 2017 season.

red sox - Why Red Sox are misreading situation by not picking up John Farrell’s option - WEEI | Rob Bradford

He’s coming back in 2017. I don’t agree with Bradford about 2018. If the players buy in and the team is successful next July, you can pick up the option. If the players don’t buy in and the team is playing below expectations, you can fire him.

Here’s what I’m getting at: Either the Red Sox are sold that John Farrell has earned the right to be the face of this franchise or he hasn’t. There’s no in between But that’s right where the Sox are trying to wedge this situation into.

They should have ...

#NatsRide Helps Fans Help Themselves After DC, Metro Snub Them

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser was asked whether she had a plan to get Nationals fans home from Thursday’s Game 5, which will likely end after Metro closes.

“Nats fans are amazingly persistent and creative, and we know that they’re going to plan ahead,” Bowser said.

Yes. Yes, they are. And they have. Before Bowser’s unhelpful response to an important question, Nationals fans were making and sharing alternative transportation plans using the hashtag #NatsRide on Twitter.

And as most Nats ...

WTOP: Train waits for no fan: Metro won’t extend service for Nats game

Metro is beyond awful. No wonder thousands of commuters would rather get stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic above ground than deal with the bullshit on the rails.

As part of the 24-hour track-work program that began this spring, Metro no longer extends its hours for games, concerts or special events, and Metro says the Nats’ game Thursday is no exception.

Game 5 of the National League Division Series starts at 8:08 p.m., and Metro closes at midnight, making it likely that fans will need to ...

Will Clark has a complicated Baseball Hall of Fame case

Playing nine years in Candlestick did Clark few favors. “The wind switched around all the time,” he said. “One minute it was blowing in from left, the other it was blowing in from right. One minute, it’s blowing out to right-center.”

Clark had to look for other strategies as a hitter in San Francisco, between the wind and his manager his first seven seasons, Roger Craig, deliberately having the infield grass cut high to encourage more double-play balls.

“Playing in Candlestick, it didn’t ...

Scout’s View: Tim Tebow Draws A Crowd, But Doesn’t Impress |

Why is he in the AFL? He is old for a prospect. He hasn’t played past high school. I get taking a flyer but why put him in a position where he most likely will be overmatched.

Nationals Max Scherzer to start Game 5 of NLDS |

Mike Dee out as Padres president and CEO - The San Diego Union-Tribune

Nothing says bad ownership more than instability and constant change at the top.

In a surprising turn of events, Mike Dee, the executive who had been entrusted with running the Padres, is out as president and CEO of the franchise.

“My goal and our organization’s objective is to have stability and long-term tenure in our front office, but sometimes these changes are inevitable,” Padres managing partner Peter Seidler said in a statement provided to the Union-Tribune. “Mike is no longer ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 10-12-2016

[Grants Pass, Oregon] Rogue River Courier, October 12, 1916:

Before the greatest crowd that ever witnessed a professional baseball game, the Boston Red Sox annexed their fourth world’s championship this afternoon. A vast throng, numbering 42,620 wild-eyed fans, saw the Sox down the Brooklyn Dodgers, four to one, in this fifth game of the 1916 title struggle.
The great crowd really did not turn itself loose until the game was over. Thousands then flooded down on the diamond in the wake of a ...

Dodgers fan goes on gluttonous tour of Dodger Stadium after losing Joe Blanton bet

The Dodgers signing career meh pitcher Joe Blanton last winter didn’t inspire confidence from too many fans.

One fan in particular, Seth Amitie, felt so strongly Blanton would be a flop that he made a friendly wager.

Well, Blanton thrived in his new role as a reliever and turned in an ERA well better than the league average (2.48, good for a 158 league- and park-adjusted ERA+).

Amitie stayed true to his word and solicited donations to cover the cost of his misery before heading to ...

Jon Daniels has high expectations for Rangers |

General manager Jon Daniels made it clear what the Rangers’ intentions are in 2017.

“We expect to win,” Daniels said on Tuesday at the club’s post-season press conference.

Daniels does not see a window closing.

“Our job as a baseball leadership team, if we are doing our jobs right—I don’t think the window, there is an open and closed period. Good organizations find a way to win year in and year out. I don’t think after an x number of years, you do about face and change plans.”

Cubs rally to defeat Giants, advance to NLCS |

After every game, the Cubs’ mantra is “We never quit.” They yell it together, like a college cheer, and repeat it, “We never quit!” On Tuesday night, that no-quit attitude carried the Cubs into the National League Championship Series for the second straight year, and they got there by toppling the team dubbed the “October giant.”

After being shut down by Matt Moore for eight innings, the Cubs rallied against San Francisco’s beleaguered bullpen for an historic four-run ninth inning and posted a ...

Tim Tebow Comforts Man Who Collapses After Game

Tebow’s afternoon took an intense turn after the game when a man standing in a crush of fans seeking autographs along the third-base line collapsed and appeared to have a seizure. Tebow stopped signing and cautiously made his way over to where people had gathered. He sat on the concrete retaining wall that separates the field from the first row of seats and prayed silently as a medic in a Bryce Harper T-shirt and a Detroit Tigers baseball cap tended to the man.

Chase Utley saved the Dodgers’ season on Tuesday, his tiebreaking RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning sending Los Angeles to a 6-5 win over the Nationals. The National League Division Series heads back to Washington for a decisive Game 5 on Thursday (5 or 8 p.m. ET/2 or 5 p.m. PT on FS1).

The winning rally started when Andrew Toles was hit on the foot by a Blake Treinen slider. Pinch-hitter Andre Ethier, who spent most of the season healing from a broken leg, singled. ...

Danny Salazar could return from injury to rejoin Cleveland Indians for ALCS - Let’s Go Tribe

Mike Clevinger might not be starting next series.

Francona could be on the verge of having another dominant arm at his disposal in the mid to late innings, because Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reports that All-Star Danny Salazar threw a bullpen session yesterday, will likely throw a live BP session, and could be ready to rejoin the team for the ALCS. Salazar also threw a bullpen session last Friday, so yesterday’s session means there weren’t any setbacks.

Braves near naming Brian Snitker manager |

As the Braves near the end of their managerial search, a Major League source said it looks like Brian Snitker will remain in the role he handled on an interim basis this year.

The Braves are expected to announce their decision within the next few days, at a time that does not conflict with Major League Baseball’s postseason schedule. But as they near the completion of this selection process, it looks like Snitker has maintained the early advantage he had on the two external candidates—Bud ...

The Indians will have their hands full against the Blue Jays.

Corey Kluber walked up to me Monday night in the Indians clubhouse at Fenway Park, poured a beer over my head and said, “Thanks.”

I knew what he meant, but he was definitely thanking the wrong guy. He should have been thanking himself and his teammates for sweeping the Boston Red Sox in the American League Division Series.

The Nationals are one victory from advancing to the National League Championship Series after pulling away from the Dodgers on Monday, 8-3. Maybe this was supposed to happen in a game pitting the Major Leagues’ winningest team of the season against the most successful one of the past decade. Neither would yield easily.
