White Sox Designate Mat Latos For Assignment

The White Sox have designated right-hander Mat Latos for assignment, according to Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago (Twitter link). Hayes tweets that Latos’ roster spot will go to 2013 second-round pick Tyler Danish — a 21-year-old right-hander with a 4.42 ERA, 5.6 K/9 and 1.9 BB/9 in 75 1/3 innings (12 starts) for Double-A Birmingham this season.

Latos, 28, has been in the Chicago rotation since Opening Day after signing a one-year, $3MM contract this offseason. However, after a brilliant start to ...

Mike Piazza agrees to buy Italian soccer team

About six weeks before he enters the Baseball Hall of Fame, the former major league catcher announced Wednesday that he has agreed in principle to buy Italian soccer team A.C. Reggiana 1919.

Reggiana spent 2015-16 in Lega Pro A, the third tier of Italian soccer. The club had a brief run in top-flight Serie A in the 1990s.

Piazza has had an eye on owning an Italian club for some time. He told Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport in 2015 that he was interested in buying the more ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 6-9-2016

Pittsburgh Press, June 9, 1916:

White’s Wonders, a ball team composed of seven one-armed boys, using two-arm men only at first base and behind the bat, now touring the south, started their season with an easy victory over the Elberton [Georgia] Home Guards, 11 to 3. Five batters on the Wonder team each poled triples. Brown, pitcher for the one-arm team, allowed six blows. The Wonders committed three errors.

They blew it. Should have called the team the Oneders.

Pirates have pivoted away from pitching in recent draft selections | TribLIVE

Because of the epidemic of Tommy John surgeries in the professional game and the increased amount of pitching prospects with medical red flags — many believe the trends are tied to sport specialization and the showcase circuit — have the Pirates made a turn in philosophy?

Have they elected to reduce risk and target position players over pitchers with premium picks?

“It’s simply how the board has played out, the players we felt had the best potential impact to us,” Huntington said. ...

Tigers closer Francisco Rodriguez says he battled Zika in offseason

He battled the virus, but eventually gave up a two-run double to it.

Rodriguez, a 34-year-old native of Caracas, Venezuela, contracted the virus this past offseason and learned just how serious the illness can be. He was laid up for two weeks with severe bodyaches, joint pain, headaches and a myriad of other symptoms. Considering the effects of the illness are even more devastating for women, especially pregnant women, he advised any athletes contemplating participating in the Olympics to ...

Willson Contreras under Cubs’ minor league microscope - Chicago Tribune

And there’s a reasonable chance they’ll get a look at Triple-A Iowa catcher Willson Contreras, who is batting .343 with nine home runs and 39 RBIs in 48 games.

“I’ve heard nothing but good stuff,” manager Joe Maddon said. “You’ll see him here at some point. I’m certain of that. I don’t know when. He’s doing everything properly. I’m hearing a lot about his defense.  You think he’s going to hit.”

However, there are a few roadblocks for Contreras, 24. The Cubs currently ...

Phillies’ Velasquez suffers biceps injury | phillies.com

The Phillies always loved Vince Velasquez’s talent and potential, but they also had concerns about his durability.

Those concerns popped up Wednesday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park, as Velasquez left the game after throwing just two pitches in an 8-1 loss to the Cubs. Velasquez’s fastball registered only 86 and 87 mph on the radar gun, which were bigger red flags than the red World Series championship banners that fly in center field, considering his fastball averaged 95 mph this season.

A Q&A with Tom Tango: MLB’s New Data Guru

DC: What do you imagine your primary role will be at BAM?

TT: The primary role would be to do as much as I can in data analytics, data management, metric construction, and just general saber-creativity. Basically try to parse through the mountains of data, and come up with an organization of the data that will allow for compelling stories. We have a thousand questions to ask, so I will come up with ways to present that data so that, when someone asks a question, that person will be able to ...

Ted Diadiun: Muhammad Ali ushered in the era of preening, swaggering athletes

In which Ted Diadiun(whowever that is) decides that Joel Sherman should not be the only turd in the sportswriters’ punch bowl.

In addition to his indisputable boxing skills, his instinctive showmanship, his inspirational role as a confident young black man and the warm fuzzies that his eventual turn as the kindly old gentleman of sport have produced, Ali’s legacy includes a few other things.

The first is his creation of the preening, prancing, unapologetically boastful demeanor that has ...

Jazayerli: An Irresistible Force Rises in Chicago

It’s hard to talk about the 2016 Cubs without descending into what can only be called baseball stat porn. The numbers that surround this team range from the astonishing to the unbelievable. Here is the simplest way to sum up how good this team is with facts that should be mutually exclusive:

1. The 2016 Chicago Cubs are on pace to challenge the all-time record for victories in a season.

2. They are underachieving….

What is unprecedented is just how they’re managing it. The Cubs aren’t ...

Cameron: MLB Should Throw the Book at Yordano Ventura

Last year, following the bench clearing incident with the White Sox, MLB suspended Ventura for seven games, which caused him to miss one start. After this latest incident, MLB needs to throw the book at him. The punishments escalate significantly for repeat offenders of other behaviors MLB is trying to curb — a second failed PED test brings a suspension twice as long as a first failed test, for instance — and it’s clear that Ventura won’t be deterred from starting fights by simply ...

The Yoenis Cespedes trade wasn’t one-sided at all | New York Post

n his first four starts following a late-April promotion, Fulmer never got beyond five innings, had a 6.52 ERA and a .944 OPS against. In the four subsequent starts, he has worked at least six innings each time, posted a 0.32 ERA and .378 OPS against. In his last three outings, he has given up three or fewer hits and yielded no runs. No pitcher in major league history has ever had three such results in their first eight starts. The previous fewest starts was 10 by Anibal Sanchez in 2016.
