Braun was a far cry from the offensive superstar who averaged 34 home runs and 107 RBI while batting .313 over a six-year period from 2007-‘12.
The Brewers have a huge financial stake in Braun being able to return to his previous form as a hitter. After next season, during which he has a $12 million salary, a five-year, $105 million extension kicks in that carries through 2020, with a mutual option for 2021 worth at least $15 million more.
That financial commitment is huge for the club ...

There is a lot of info in the article about his signing status.
Scouts believe Yoan Moncada could be the best teenage prospect to come from Cuba in years.
Scouts have called Moncada the next Jorge Soler and his skills have been matched up against Yasiel Puig’s at the same age. He once beat new Red Sox outfielder Rusney Castillo in a base running competition during the Serie Nacional all-star festivities in Cuba and his power has been compared to Cuban slugger Yasmany Tomas.

Another interesting article from David Lauria.
Elias on the Astros amateur scouting staff: “A lot gets made of what we do analytically, and rightfully so, because we put a lot of work into that, but we also have a very skilled scouting staff. We have a lot of baseball guys. My department, amateur scouting, is a 20-man staff with a wealth of experience. We have former big-leaguers, we have guys who had minor-league careers, we have guys who just had college careers. They all played the game at ...

Pittsburgh Press, November 3, 1914:
Will the next world’s series be played in the Yale bowl? Baseball authorities of no less prominence than Harry Hempstead, president, and John B. Foster, secretary of the New York National league baseball team think it can be played there.
If the post-season games can be brought [there] crowds of 72,000 can be accommodated easily, doubling the receipts from the games.
Man, I’m happy that precedent didn’t get set. Neutral site World Series would be so much ...Read More...

This is an odd rumor. Unless the the team is ready to risk starting Pete O’Brien, it doesn’t really have a replacement ready.
Montero, 31, is owed $40 million over the next three seasons. And though his offense declined in 2013 and ‘14, he still could be a realistic alternative for teams that strike out on free-agent catcher Russell Martin, particularly if the D-Backs help pay down his remaining obligation.
The D-Backs want to upgrade their starting pitching, but team president Derrick Hall told ...

The Arizona Fall League’s most dangerous hitter this season continued to pound pitchers in the prospect circuit’s Fall Stars Game at Salt River Fields on Saturday evening. Yankees first baseman Greg Bird opened the scoring with the longest home run in the game’s nine-year history, triggering a four-run second inning that held up for a 6-2 Eastern Division victory.

The most pressing decision is whether to make a one-year, $15.3 million qualifying offer to Hanley Ramirez by Monday. That would assure Los Angeles of a supplemental Draft pick between the first and second rounds if Ramirez rejects the offer and signs elsewhere, but it also gives Ramirez the choice of accepting the offer and committing to the Dodgers for one year.

Break the bank or make some deals?
More than at any time in recent memory, the link between spending and winning is tenuous. Most players don’t reach free agency until age 30 or later, but the production of players in their 30s has fallen off steeply in recent years. The Red Sox aren’t the only team to be have been victimized by spending too much money and counting too heavily on one-time stars past their primes.
Young players under team control are the game’s new currency, meaning rich ...

Fresh off his H. V. Kaltenborn “Suave Voice of Doom” audio collection, Madden spreads…
Besides the aforementioned problems with the college scholarships and in the youth leagues, perhaps the biggest reason even the best teams in baseball are significantly flawed — as the Giants were — is because there are simply too many teams in baseball. In his farewell tour, Selig has understandably repeatedly said he has no regrets about anything he’s done in his impactful 23-year stewardship. And ...

The Cheesehead Nightingale?
The Brewers have acquired 1B/OF Adam Lind from the Blue Jays, possibly pending physicals, Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish tweets. SportsNet.ca’s Ben Nicholson-Smith initially reported the two sides were close to a deal. The Jays will receive righty Marco Estrada in return, Andrew Walker of Sports590.ca tweets.
The Blue Jays exercised Lind’s $7.5MM option on Lind earlier today, and Lind’s contract also includes a 2016 option for $8MM, or a $500K buyout… Lind hit ...
Where’s the proof? Maddon had a opt-out clause in his contract. He reportedly was reminded about the clause by TB’s Matt Silverman, “The opt-out clause, Maddon said, was something of a fine-print treasure revealed to him in a call from Matt Silverman, the Rays’ president of baseball operations, just after Friedman left. “I had totally forgotten about it,” Maddon said. “Andrew leaves, and I get a phone call that I have an opt-out clause. Otherwise I would not have known, I swear to ...Read More...

The Mets and their chief operating officer, Jeff Wilpon, in court papers filed Friday, denied all the accusations made in a lawsuit by a former senior ticket-sales executive who said that she had been discriminated against for being pregnant out of wedlock.
The executive, Leigh Castergine, said she had been fired in retaliation for complaining to the team’s human resources department.
“The termination of her employment,” the Mets and Wilpon said in their filings in United States ...Read More...

One of favorite things to watch. If we could get the other AFL games on demand at MILB.com, I would be even happier.

The Tigers announced qualifying offers to free agents Max Scherzer and Victor Martinez among a flurry of moves Friday, including the loss of Andy Dirks off waivers to Toronto and Patrick McCoy off waivers to Baltimore.
Detroit also purchased the contract of outfielder Wynton Bernard from low Class A West Michigan and outrighted the contracts of utilityman Don Kelly and reliever Evan Reed to Triple-A Toledo. Shortstop Jose Iglesias, right-hander Drew VerHagen and relievers Bruce Rondon and Luke ...

So let’s judge a player’s potential on just 38 plate appearances.
Despite all the Pederson hype, though, he looked like anything but a can’t-miss kid after his late-season call-up. You never want to judge a player’s potential on just 38 plate appearances, but for now it’s impossible not to notice he went 4-for-28 with 11 strikeouts and nine walks. He turns 23 in April, it’s not like starting the year back in triple-A is going to ruin his career.

Shortly after Brian Sabean became general manager of the Giants, he orchestrated a trade that was arguably one of the most unpopular in franchise history. He sent third-base fan favorite Matt Williams to the Cleveland Indians in a deal that brought back at the time little-known second baseman Jeff Kent, infielder Jose Vizcaino and reliever Julian Tavarez.
The outrage among the folks in the Bay Area, including the media, was so strong that Sabean finally called a news conference to explain, ...

Since a report from Montreal’s 98.5 FM’s Jeremy Filosa way back in mid-August that the Blue Jays were playing two spring training exhibition games at Olympic Stadium, there have been multiple confirmations by both Toronto (Shi Davidi) and national (Jon Morosi) reporters. Now we have a semi-official confirmation of the event: the two games now appear on both the Blue Jays’ and the Reds’ April schedules, as noticed by the eagle-eyed Rob Silver:
As of time of writing, event ...
Where will they all sign?
4. Hanley Ramirez
With Derek Jeter gone, we have a new why-is-he-still-playing-shortstop champion. If Ramirez still insists on playing short wherever he goes, feel free to slide him one down on this list. Ramirez isn’t the average-fueled monster who hit .345 with 20 homers in a half-season in 2013, but he’s still an excellent power hitter in a free agent market that isn’t flush with them. And, okay, technically he can still play up the middle.
If Shin-Soo ...
