If you want to work in baseball, you might want to consider Haverford College.
Quite a haul for the Rockies.
According to MLB.com’s Thomas Harding, Monday’s blockbuster trade sends big league shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and reliever LaTroy Hawkins to Toronto for right-handers Jeff Hoffman and Miguel Castro, the Jays’ No. 3 and 5 prospects. A third prospect yet to be named and Major League shortstop Jose Reyes are also headed to Colorado.

Keith Law does not like this deal.
As far as what the A’s got back, Casey Meisner was my sleeper pitching prospect for the Mets this year, and has indeed had a breakout season in Savannah. He would now rank sixth in the Mets’ system, behind Dominic Smith (who ranked No. 40 on my last updated global prospect ranking), Amed Rosario, Gavin Cecchini, Michael Fulmer and Wuilmer Becerra (although you could argue Meisner belongs ahead of Becerra too). The 6-foot-8 right-hander is consistently ...
A bunch of stories from the Hall of Fame weekend.
OK, what’s the next big thing?
The ultimate lesson from “Big Data Baseball” seems to be one the Twins have already learned.
“The biggest thing for me was (the Pirates) getting players to buy in and how they did it,” Perkins said, “and not saying, ‘These guys are nerds that have never played the game.’ I think that’s the worst thing you can say about those guys. There’s always a benefit to outside influence. They see the game in a different way than we see the game.” ...Read More...

Let’s hope Victorino can stay healthy and helps the Angels. Rutledge is a spare part. Rusney gets another chance to show what he can do.

He’s no Carlos Silva though.
Edwin Jackson is officially a free agent, as the Cubs released the veteran right-hander after designating him for assignment last week.
That means Chicago is on the hook for the remaining $15 million or so on Jackson’s four-year, $52 million contract and he’s now able to sign with any team for whatever he can get.
Jackson was terrible as a starter for the Cubs in 2013 and 2014, combining to go 14-33 with a 5.58 ERA…
Pittsburgh Press, July 27, 1915:
If George Kelley [sic], the first baseman whom Scout Kinsella has picked up from the Northwestern league for the Giants, is half as good a player as his illustrious uncle, Bill Lange, of Anson days, McGraw will not have to look much farther for an eventual successor to Fred Merkle.
Kelly was a pretty solid ballplayer, at least half was good as Bill Lange. He didn’t really deserve a Hall of Fame plaque, but a home run title, two RBI crowns, and a career batting ...Read More...

Finally, after almost a day of speculation, the Royals completed a trade for Reds right-hander Johnny Cueto.
The deal was announced during the third inning of the Royals-Astros game on Sunday: Cueto and cash considerations to the Royals for left-handers Brandon Finnegan, John Lamb and Cody Reed.

A Puig for Hamels deal can’t happen because the Dodgers said they aren’t trading him. Right?
The Red Sox and A’s made the Jon Lester-Yoenis Cespedes swap, and we wonder which teams will make a similar hitter-for-pitcher deal this season? How about Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig for Phillies lefty Cole Hamels? Would Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski flip Cespedes for a pitcher? Or would he deal David Price for a hitter?

In both sports and business, there is a popular idea that a group is made better or worse by how it generates or loses energy together. So-called “energy givers” are valued, and “energy suckers” are rooted out and discarded. Chiefs coach Andy Reid, among many others, refers to this regularly.
There is so much talk in sports about team chemistry, an impossibly vague term that often confuses cause and effect. Maybe there’s some of that here, too — there’d be a lot fewer high fives ...

The Angels’ present need is clearly identified: a starting left fielder. They would prefer to make a trade without disrupting the major league roster or surrendering their top prospect, pitcher Sean Newcomb. The mild-mannered Stoneman sounded bolder about the likelihood of a significant trade now than he ever did in his long run as general manager.
“The expectation is we’ll be able to get something done,” he said.
The Angels have been linked to Jay Bruce of the Cincinnati Reds, Gerardo Parra ...

As A.J. Burnett sees it, a lack of execution led to his two subpar starts after the All-Star break. Too many pitches left over the plate, especially to left-handers. Simple issues to address, small tweaks he has made before.
His previous two outings stand out in sharp relief against his first-half performance, but Burnett cautioned against using that as a yardstick.
“You expect me to go out and do what I did the first half, you’re nuts,” he said after the Pirates lost to the Washington ...

David Laurila’s lastest. That’s L-A-U-R-I-L-I-A.
Carlos Correa is on the cusp of stardom at a young age. Two months shy of his 21st birthday, the Astros shortstop is hitting a precocious .292/.337/.532, with 21 extra-base knocks in 154 at bats.
According to manager A.J. Hinch, the youngster is attentive to a fault. After an at bat, or following a game, he’ll often seek “affirmation on what he sees versus what we see.”
“He’ll want to know that his load is on time,” elaborated ...

Harvey made some mechanical adjustments, pitched on normal rest, and found his slider.
Manager Terry Collins suggested that pitching on standard rest probably helped Harvey, too. Harvey has groused about working on extra rest. The Mets have ditched a six-man rotation. They don’t plan to reintroduce even spot starts over the next few weeks.
Asked about the key to Harvey’s improved showing, Collins said: “I’m sure he’ll tell you, ‘a five-man rotation.’ I think that had something to do ...

The Royals were close to trading for Cincinnati Reds ace Johnny Cueto before the deal fell through, major-league sources told FOX Sports.
The issue, the sources said, was that one of the players going from the Royals to the Reds did not check out medically. At that point, the deal was nullified.
The near-trade created a dramatic scene among Reds officials and players prior to their game Saturday evening against the Colorado Rockies. Not long before the first pitch, Cueto’s fellow starter ...
Not a bad showcase start.
“I mean, it’s not what I envisioned,” Hamels said, asked if he thought about this being his final start with the Phillies. “It’s not what I thought. It’s not in my thought process. I think all I’ve been thinking about the past couple days was just to kind of correct my pitching, just being able to be out there and enjoy the moment.”
Hamels had a 19.89 ERA in his past two starts, which had many wondering if he would be traded before Friday’s 4 p.m. ET Deadline. Yes, ...
