Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 11-13-2014

Toledo News-Bee, November 13, 1914:

Owner Charles Weeghman of the Chicago Federals on Friday denied that the Chicago Cubs actually had been transferred to him and peace terms for the elimination of the Federal league agreed upon, though well-informed baseball men insisted that these two steps were taken at Thursday’s conference between Weeghman and Garry Herrmann.

Weeghman declared that a few details in the deal by which he is to become owner of the Cubs, are yet to be arranged and that the ...

Braves appear to be rebuilding, aiming toward 2017 | www.myajc.com

It’s tough having just enough talent to be competitive when you realize some of those players keeping you competitive will be gone at the end of the year. You get faced with the choice of either taking a step back now, so that you will hopefully shorten the period to rebound, or hanging tough with patches, which buries you when things collapse (see the Phillies).  Granted, the Yankees were able to patch through such a problem for the last few years. Of course, they are now paying the price.

Deadspin: Curt Schilling Debates Evolution On Twitter

And here we thought he was just a terrible businessman.

Seriously, a seven-year-old with a rudimentary public school education is more informed about science than Curt Schilling. Below is a selection of the absolute dumbest tweets, but if you have a half hour and want to laugh/weep/hate read—or maybe all three at once—go check out his timeline, where he’s still going strong as of this posting.

Reds won’t rule out a fire sale | New York Post

Dan O’Dowd, who looks like a great addition to MLB Network, commented that the last place a GM should be is in the middle, not all in and not all out. It seems Jocketty shares that view.

Word is their general manager, Walt Jocketty, has told his troops the team should follow one of two very definitive routes: 1) All in. 2) All out.

Meet the latest Cuban sensation who could change the game - Yahoo Sports

Two general managers and two other officials familiar with Moncada and Cuban baseball this week all agreed on the expected price once he hits the market: between $30 million and $40 million. While that’s close to what the similarly aged Puig ($42 million) and the Cubs’ Jorge Soler ($30 million) received, the circumstances for Moncada are entirely different than when Puig and Soler signed in 2012.

Under baseball’s current collective-bargaining agreement, international free agents under 23 ...

How NY Mets could avoid a Matt Harvey shutdown in 2015 - NY Daily News

The Mets are hoping to contend in 2015, and do not want Matt Harvey to become this year’s Stephen Strasburg, shut down for a playoff run. And while internal discussions about a plan for Harvey next year are in the very early stages, several creative approaches are possible.

Blue Jays, Tigers Swap Anthony Gose, Devon Travis

Is “Devon Travis” the most soap opera-y name since “Blake Hawksworth”?

Wait, there aren’t soap operas anymore, are there.

The Blue Jays announced that they have acquired second base prospect Devon Travis from the Tigers in exchange for center fielder Anthony Gose…

Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski tells Lynn Henning of the Detroit News (Twitter link) that Gose will play center field regularly for the Tigers if all goes according to plan. The fleet-footed Gose is known to be an outstanding defender ...

Pirates Acquire Francisco Cervelli For Justin Wilson

Finally a regular gig for Frankie Brains?

Another Yankees catcher is on his way to Pittsburgh, as Francisco Cervelli has been acquired by the Pirates in exchange for lefty reliever Justin Wilson, the teams announced tonight…

The Pirates are getting a catcher who has performed well in limited recent action. Unfortunate injuries — a foul tip and collision followed by a hamstring strain — cut Cervelli short in each of the last three years, holding him to just 225 plate appearances. But he does ...

Official: [Oscar] Taveras was drunk during fatal crash

St. Louis Cardinals rookie outfielder Oscar Taveras was drunk at the time of his fatal car crash last month in his Caribbean homeland, an official in the Dominican Republic said Wednesday.

Tessie Sanchez, a spokeswoman for the Dominican attorney general’s office, told The Associated Press toxicology reports showed Taveras had a blood-alcohol level five times the country’s legal limit when he lost control of his car Oct. 26 on a highway in the tourist region of Puerto Plata.

She says the ...

Tigers Close To Re-Signing Victor Martinez

Shop smart…

The Tigers are close to a four-year deal with Victor Martinez, FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reports (Twitter link)... Re-signing Martinez was said to be Detroit’s top priority this offseason, despite the potential loss of other key free agents Max Scherzer and Torii Hunter. The 35-year-old Martinez enjoyed perhaps the finest offensive season of his 12-year career in 2014, slashing .335/.409/.565 with a career-high 32 homers. He led the league in both on-base percentage and OPS…

SB Nation 2014 Off-season Simulation debriefing

Have you ever thought your team’s GM made a stupid trade? Paid too much for a free agent? Wish you had the opportunity to run the team more effectively? I gave the opportunity to 30 fans to run their team how they saw fit in an Offseason Simulation, cramming an entire winter of transactions into four days. I gave each team a recommended budget and asked them to negotiate with each other on trades, and with me on free agents.

The following is a summary of what transpired over one week. You ...

The future of treating ACL tears: Less invasive surgery

Nearly three decades ago, a man on crutches changed the course of Dr. Martha Murray’s life. The two met at a party at Stanford University, where Murray was a graduate student in engineering. They talked about the man’s recent anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, tear. When he told Murray his reconstruction surgery would require a tendon graft and holes drilled into his thighbone and shinbone, she was shocked.

Murray wondered why surgeons couldn’t simply sew the two ends of the torn ...

Milwaukee Journal, November 12, 1914:

President James E. Gaffney of the Braves yesterday denied a report that his ball park had been sold to a Chicago mail order establishment as a site for a shoe factory, but admitted that the grounds were in the market. He said he expected to locate soon on an attractive home for the world’s championship next year.

The ballpark in question was South End Grounds, which indeed saw its last Braves game in August 1914. The team spent part of the 1915 season at ...

Mets exploring options for shortstop - Newsday

The Diamondbacks also have shortstops to offer and have received calls on Didi Gregorius. But to consider moving a shortstop, GM Dave Stewart said he’d need an offer that he considers “earth shattering.”

Offseason already seeing Astros talk about a win-now approach - Ultimate Astros

“Obviously, we’re going to give Jonathan every chance to make this club,” Luhnow said. “We’re going to give Matt every chance to make this club. But we’re not going to hand them those positions. They’re going to have to earn those positions. Because we’re at the point now where the development at the big leagues is behind us, and this is about producing. And if they don’t produce, still both those guys have options. Both of them could end up back in (Class AAA) Fresno.

Agent for Andrew Miller says left-handed setup man ready for closer’s role - ESPN

Sources: Cubs in talks to acquire Nationals’ Jordan Zimmermann | Chicago Sun-Times

Another report says the clubs aren’t dealing. Brett Anderson would be a great buy-low pickup for a smart team.

Zimmermann, 28, would be a younger, potentially less-expensive alternative to the higher-end free agents on the market this off-season, though the player package to acquire him would have to include at least one of their touted young middle infielders, sources say.

One source said the teams have enough mutual interest that names have been discussed. Another said he expected the Cubs to ...
