Heyman | Morgan Has Right To Express Opinion—Now Ignore It

Tell us what you really think, Jon.

If the issue is the messenger, I’ve got no issue with the complaints. As annoying as Morgan was announcing baseball games, he was fifty times more annoying than that in person. He acted like he had his own personal caste system, with himself at the top, other ballplaying greats next, people who could help him after that and the rest of us lower than the dirt he played on. There are a few other arrogant former players, but he was the king of arrogance.

In ...

Derek Jeter-led Marlins parted ways with scout while he was in hospital after undergoing cancer surgery

Nice to see the Captain bringing class to his new franchise. Just. Wow.

Marty Scott, who joined the Marlins as a vice president in 2011 and in recent years had worked as a scout, said he was told his contract would not be renewed Oct. 16 while at the Cleveland Clinic in Weston, Florida, where doctors three days earlier had removed a cancerous tumor and polyps from his colon. Doctors initially found the cancer in late August as Scott underwent a battery of tests in preparation for a kidney ...

Doesn’t Take Perfect SAT to See We’re Going About Hall of Fame Voting All Wrong

Let us ponder the SATs.

Great scores come in many forms, but they’re not all created equal. If you hit 700 on verbal and math, the resulting 1,400 will qualify you for some pretty good schools. That same 1,400 might get you into MIT, however, if 800 of it comes via math, or Amherst if you similarly crush the verbal.

There’s more to college admissions than test scores, and yeah, yeah, most MIT and Amherst grads aced both halves of the SAT, but for the purposes of this exercise, which student ...

New York Tribune, December 1, 1917:

Ed Bang, the well-known baseball critic, of Cleveland, advocates as a solution of existing major league troubles a merger of the National and American circuits.
...
The proposition contemplates one club for each of the following cities: New York, Chicago, Boston, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit, and St. Louis.

That is the worst idea I’ve ever heard in my life, Ed.

Bryce Harper is hanging with Kris Bryant at a Vegas Golden Knights game, so feel free to speculate wildly

Harper, scheduled for free agency after the upcoming 2018 season, is batting 1.000 when it comes to getting fans to read into each and every move he makes, hoping that everything he does has some sort of hidden clue about where he wants to sign his next gargantuan contract.

And of course Cubs fans are hoping it all means he’s coming to the North Side.

His most recent activity? Hanging with Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant at Tuesday night’s Vegas Golden Knights game.

I’m starting to think the ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 11-30-2017

Oklahoma City Times, November 30, 1917:

Frank B. Gilbreth, an efficiency expert of Providence, R.I., recently made some tests as to the speed of a thrown ball. The results of these tests show that the average speed attained by a fast pitcher is about 2.4 miles per minute.
...
Gilbreth found some exceptionally fast pitchers, who delivered a ball at the rate of 2.88 miles per minute.

Yes, 172.8 MPH is indeed exceptionally fast.

Tangotiger Blog

I agree 100% with Tangotiger. The quest for one true number is foolhardy. Let’s try to get the best answers for the different questions with metrics specifically designed to answer those questions.

The true answer is ENTIRELY dependent on YOUR question.  You ask the question, then a solution will present itself.  But very few people think like that.

They want “the” number. And so, that’s what we are left with.  We are left with choosing the number.  And once we choose the number, meaning ...

Four reasons why MLB’s Hot Stove is lukewarm

Jeff Passan, former Hall of Fame voter, gives some reasons for the slow start to the free agent period.

“Shohei Ohtani,” one agent said, “is like the baseball version of the new Amazon headquarters.”

He is, according to people around the game, a lot of things. A staggering talent, capable of throwing a ball 102 mph from the right side and hitting it like a leviathan from the left side and running with the speed of Mike Trout despite standing 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds. A complete mystery, ...

Agree or Disagree, Morgan Has Right to Express Himself – Inside the Seams

I know having respect for differences of opinion isn’t in vogue. Although I disagree strongly and find flaws in his logic, I don’t have a problem with the expression of his opinion.

Morgan’s letter was polite, but to the point. Agree or disagree, it was Morgan’s right to speak his mind, just like anyone else. Will his presentation impact the voting? It could, particularly if a voter is uncertain of his stance on the issue.

Is that any sillier than the recently cast ballot where a voter ...

Mike Rizzo feels Bryce Harper will stay in DC | MLB.com

“I think we have as good a chance to sign him long-term as anybody in baseball,” Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said on MLB Network this week. “He’s the type of iconic, historic type of player that would love to be with the same organization throughout his whole career, such as [Derek] Jeter and that group of guys. I think he wants to be here. We want him here. I think there’s an opportunity for him to make history here.”

An unpleasant alternative if Giancarlo Stanton refuses trade | Miami Herald

There are worse things than living in Miami and making millions of dollars playing baseball. I’d say Stanton has hand, not the Marlins.

According to two sources with knowledge of discussions, the Marlins informed Stanton in October that if he refused to waive his no-trade rights and accept a trade, he would remain a Marlin and team officials would look to trade off other top players to reduce payroll.

While it wasn’t presented to Stanton as an ultimatum, one source said, it shows that the ...

El Paso Herald, November 29, 1917:

The frequently made statement that president Weeghman of the Cubs is “about to close a deal for Rogers Hornsby of the Cardinals,” is repeated [in Chicago] and this time with more definite detail. In exchange for Hornsby and catcher Snyder, so the statement goes, Larry Doyle is to go to St. Louis as manager and Fred Merkle will be sent along to play the outfield for the Cardinals.

The deal didn’t happen. This was perhaps because Branch Rickey wasn’t the sort of ...

MLB Pace Has Never Been Slower. Who’s to Blame? | FanGraphs Baseball

Get the pitchers on the rubber. Get the batters in the box. Enforce the existing rules. Stop the catchers from going to the mound so much. Have managers make pitching changes from the dugout. Limit the amount of visits to the mound by coaches and managers per game. Shorten the break between innings by going to split screen a little more often. Limit instant replay.

Fixed.

Aaron Judge, José Altuve, and the Next Battle in the War Over WAR - The Ringer

Maybe we should stop calling different systems by the same name. We have different abbreviations for BABIP and AVG because, although they are both measuring a player’s ability to get on base by hitting the ball, they are calculated differently and are different metrics. Fangraph’s WAR and Baseball Reference’s WAR are two different calculations. At least Baseball Prospectus calls their version WARP to differentiate their version.

James’ Win Shares is/was a decent concept but its construction ...

Having room on the 40-man roster is great, but some of the reasons why are concerning - BaltimoreBaseball.com

Because there are going to be several more Brugman types joining the Orioles in the next few weeks, maybe few months. For variety-sake, that can be a good thing, I suppose.

It’s also a bad thing – or at least it points to a bad thing: The Orioles’ lack of minor league talent, especially at the upper levels of the farm system.

The Orioles were able to land Brugman, a left-handed hitting outfielder who’s had some solid success in his pro career so far, because they only had 33 players ...

BA: Most Players Skipped MLB’s Workout For Former Braves Prospects

Of the 12 players, just three—outfielders Antonio Sucre and Brandol Mezquita and shortstop Angel Rojas—were at the workout, which was at Estadio Quisqueya in Santo Domingo. According to multiple sources, several players did not show up to the workout because they are in the middle of their offseason and felt that MLB did not give them sufficient time to prepare themselves to be showcased for clubs.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 11-28-2017

New York Sun, November 28, 1917:

[Ban Johnson on scheduled doubleheaders:] “Playing two games for one admission cheapens the sport and creates in the minds of the fans the belief that they are not getting their money’s worth out of a single game of nine innings. Double headers have done more to injure professional baseball than any other one thing.

Some of the minor leagues have played the double header card to the limit and owe much of their financial trouble to that fact.”

Johnson was trying ...

Hall of Stats: The Hall of Fame Case for Scott Rolen

Positional Adjustment: +34 runs

If you’re not familiar with WAR’s positional adjustment, I recommend you dig more into it on Baseball-Reference. But the gist is this—an average player at shortstop (or catcher, etc.) is more valuable than an average player at first base (or a corner outfield spot) because players who fill those roles are harder to find. I don’t think that’s rocket science, but if it is you can probably feel free to stop reading now.

Baseball-Reference says that third ...

Joe Morgan was slow to accept analytics, I get it. He was traditional, and he became the whipping boy for every new waver who wanted us to know they were smarter than any of us, like the guy who wrote he hoped Felix Hernandez would lose games because it would prove how insane traditional thinkers had been.

I worked with Joe Morgan for years. We disagreed, sometimes heartily, always with respect. I get his recent letter to Hall of Fame voters, I ...
