Scouts of the Year awarded at Winter Meetings

Each year at the Winter Meetings, the scouting industry gathers to celebrate some of their own at the Scout of the Year reception. The fact the recipients are chosen by their peers, scouts singling out other scouts, makes the honor even more special.

This year’s quartet of honorees for the 35th edition of the event have made an unmistakable impact on the game, and they continue to do so. Awarded regionally, Damon Oppenheimer of the Yankees (West Coast Scout of the Year), Brad Sloan of the Red ...

Brian Cashman refers to Yankees as Death Star |

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman delivered one of the more memorable quips of this Winter Meetings late on Wednesday at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, addressing the team’s interest—or lack thereof—in free-agent slugger Bryce Harper.

“If something doesn’t make sense today, it doesn’t mean it won’t make sense tomorrow,” Cashman said. “All I can keep telling you is, you know where my current focuses are, but at the same time we’re a fully operational Death Star.”

The Income Tax Implications of Bryce Harper’s Choice of Next Team | Community – FanGraphs Baseball

According to Chuck Hildebrandt, it’s about a $2 million swing between the worst and best.

Lastly, these tax estimates are based on the actual tax rates each of these states and cities levy on income earners in their jurisdictions, including the application of graduated rates where appropriate (mostly in high tax states, and in New York City). Even so, with only a few exceptions, the vast, vast majority of Bryce Harper’s income will be taxed in all these states and cities at the highest rate ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-12-2018

Philadelphia Evening Ledger, December 12, 1918:

Another baseball star is about to desert the diamond for business. This morning a dispatch from Bristol, Va., contained the information that Clarence (Tilly) Walker, star outfielder on the payroll of the Athletics last season, had announced his retirement from the game to enter the real estate business at Lime Stone, Tenn., his home.

Much like virtually every other ballplayer of this era who “retired” in his prime, Walker mysteriously unretired ...

Banning The Shift? MLB Managers Oppose Idea At 2018 Winter Meetings

Read the whole thing.

Brewers minor league pitcher Jon Perrin, unsurprisingly, was not amused about the idea of the league putting limits on what the defense could do behind him.

“Banning the shift is the baseball equivalent of communism. You can’t dictate where teams want to put their players on defense. If a guy hits the ball to one side of the field 60+% of the time. I’m going to put more defenders there. Don’t want a shift? Hit the ball the other way,” he tweeted.

The idea behind ...

Automatic Scouts: The Changing Landscape of Scouting | The Hardball Times

Great article on the evolving nature of baseball scouting. Scouts aren’t going anywhere. Their focus and required skill sets, however, are changing along with the rest of the game.

Many extremely talented players who are selected in the early rounds never reach superstardom, but have perfectly adequate playing careers. And there are players who seemingly have great potential who never make it to the big leagues. When a promising player doesn’t accumulate major league service time, we sometimes ...

Growing up in that area and being heavily recruited by the San Diego Padres, I knew what Willie was walking into. Ultimately, local financiers were found, and the team remained in Southern California. McDonald’s ...

Blue Jays cut ties with Tulowitzki

He is still owed $38 million.

The Blue Jays announced the release of shortstop Troy Tulowitzki on Tuesday.

“Through many conversations with Troy and his representative Paul Cohen, and with consideration to what is in the best interest of both sides, we made the decision to release Troy today,” said Ross Atkins, General Manager, Toronto Blue Jays.

Tulowitzki, 34, hit .249 (60-for-241) with 10 doubles, seven home runs, and 26 RBI in 66 games in 2017.

White Sox acquire Ivan Nova from Pirates to strengthen starting pitching depth

Nova, 31, has made 26 starts or more in five seasons since 2011. He made 29 starts and threw 161 innings last season, posting a 4.19 ERA.

The Sox are seeking one more starter to join Reynaldo Lopez, Lucas Giolito and Carlos Rodon.

Nova enters the final year of a three-year, $26 million contract and can become a free agent after next season.

Nick Kingham, who is out of options, is expected to take Nova’s spot in the Pirates’ rotation.

Didder is a backup, but he’s a very versatile backup. Everyone got to watch him play second, third and shortstop in the Arizona Fall League and he’s shown in the past that he can be an above-average center fielder.
